  11. Somaliland can now claim to have another feature of a functioning and democratic state, in sharp contrast to Somalia’s capital Mogadishu: on 29 September 2005 it held parliamentary elections, the first in Somalia since before the 1969 coup The president’s Democratic United National Party (Udub) is facing a serious challenge from its main rival KULMIYE. If KULMIYE (Solidarity) fails to win outright, it may form a majority coalition with the Justice & Welfare Party (Ucid). The first reported results, based on a counting of 105 ballot-boxes in Hargeisa, indicate its likelihood: KULMIYE won 40.71% of the votes, Ucid 29%, and Udub 30.25%. An opposition coalition would make Somaliland one of the few African countries where representatives of different parties lead the executive and legislature. In an Odweyne polling-station, the first person in the queue was a 70-year-old man who had walked to the station by foot and had been waiting outside since 7pm the previous evening. True, the US issued a statement welcoming the election and praising its conduct, and the possibility of some recognition of Somaliland’s existence and integrity cannot be discounted. But it would take only a small fraction of the money invested in Afghanistan and Iraq to improve Somaliland’s democratic record. This small east African land has, after all, succeeded through its own efforts in cultivating the very democratic spirit that the US and its partners have struggled to induce in the middle east. Will they now pay attention to Somaliland?
  12. Suldaanka, how long do you estimate before formal recognition is forwarded to Hargeisa? As soon as the paper for the fax machine arrives in the president's office

  16. Sky: Are you one of those cats who think there is Somaliland and than there is Walaweyn Dirty South. Suit yourself Northerner, because you seem to live in your own world at best or you're just plain hypocrite. Talk about taking things out of context, can you please explain what you are getting at here? Do you have anything to counter what i posted? If you think the Somaliland example cant be followed "as an autonomous part of Somalia" then how do you think Somalia will be united? Give me your ideas,,,,,,, How did my post constitute to i being a hypocrite, one can blindly throw accusations but he must have something to back it up with or else he would lose face. As it is the holy month, i suggest to keep your childish insigificant remarks to yourself. Either contribute/comment upon whether my comments have any validity on your wish for a united Somalia or not. No need for the BS. caruuri waa caruur
  17. Amiin and ramadan karim, my Ramadan actually starts on Wednesday as opposed to today (tuesday)
  18. 1) Read the whole Quraan Insha Allah (need to re-capture my former glory of reading on a regular basis) 2) Attend Tarawix (every night) 3) Spend some much needed time with my family 4) Work less 5) Enjoy being in an Islamic country during this holy month 6) Stop waisting time watching football (half way there already) 7) Remember the reasons why this is an important month
  19. Today i saw an advert in Gulf News, it read something like: Put off your loan repayments for the month of October and you will not be charged a fee. With Ramadan approaching, it is now possible to delay your re-payments for the holy month. You will avoid paying interest! It was an Abu Dhabi based bank
  20. I read this at the start of the Article I can ignore, though grudgingly, when such clerics impose dress codes and other punctilious rituals on Somali men and women in the West because these are in the free world where they can express their opinion and seek legal protection against such abuse then i didnt bother going any further
  21. Lander wlc back mate Raqid: The amount of anti-Somaliland feeling is astonishing at times. Even with this week's elections we still have those who are punching the screen when a bit good news emerges. Yes many have expressed happiness at what Somaliland is doing and for those who wish to unite Somalia, this is actually a learning process. Somalia will not come together at a flick of a switch, this example Somaliland is setting should be followed. Peace, stability, self governance etc etc then there maybe the opportunity to re-unite if Somaliland hasnt become recognised by then Thats all i'm saying,,,,,
  22. Kulmiye for a slight majority i predict.
  23. Why is it when something positive is happening in Somaliland all those against it bring out some negative articles? Somalilanders dont do the same with the soap opera that is going on in Jowhar and the rest of Somalia. The articles are irrelevant and designed to spin/appease its readers who are looking for some sort of guidance in favour of their way of thinking. The elections in Somaliland should be taken as a lesson to all that this is the future. Free and fair elections in whatever form and for whatever reason. The issue of independence and recognition may be furthered in favour of Somaliland who have again demonstrated that elections can take place 'peacefully'. But this is not the main focus here, we should be commending Somaliland for doing/progressing when all around her is stuck. Try to embrace the same formula across other parts and then there maybe a time to talk. But right now (as someone previously mentioned) Somaliland is way ahead of Somalia in terms of a political and stable society. So please, embrace, come on you can say it, EMBRACE!
