Before I could even come to agreeing wether there is such a thing as Somali culture or not, I guess it is worth looking at the role collective conscience plays in our cultural and social disorientation. Our clan system might have had a deliberation to construct 'collective conscienceness' in order to subdue the development of individualism in our society. The development of individualistic thought and knowledge is key to the creation of positive intellectualism that prompts a change in social morality, based on clear conscience and rationality. This individualism was not evident in the Somali society, because leaders of the clan system did not permit such things to exist, in fear that it may undermine clan powers and structure. Just as the West had created necessary illusions such as football and other sports to control their societies, to maintain the status quo of clanism, Somali elders devised a similar, but a much dangerous illusion for their subjects, inter-clan war games. The ensuing factor was warrior culture, which was strengthened by false pride and patriotism. These things bind the clan together regardless of individual rights. Camel and cattle wrestling was the favorite sport and had created the existence of inter-clan skirmishes, in which clan warriors were merited for their ruthlessness and bravery. These warriors were made not to reason singly but fight jointly with blind loyalty diminishing their individuality to almost nothing. The motto was "Gar iyo Gar Darro waan ku garab taag nahay". and the spirit of not reasoning individually has become almost a mindset that is difficult to break whatsoever. Individualism threatens the basic fabric and foundation on which the clan exists. So, coming to the Western hemisphere, where strong indvidualism is encrouged, some Somalis, whose individual needs were denied under the clan's sub-structures and Xeer, saw the need to embrace negetive individualism in its crudest form by breaking loose from traditional and cultural restrictions. What was needed here was a weighed balance of of individualism and collectivism. ...I guess the collective conscienceness of our clan system and how to de-construct it safely is another topic, but I think if we deal successfully with conscience, which is the cornerstone of every culture, we could overcome the cultural crisis we are facing now.

I once had a conversation with a friend who is not afraid to extend the boundary and horizon of analytical thought. This friend and I had talked long hours about the essence of (real) life and dream. The contention of our conversation, I confess, was an offshoot from common belief and conception of the roles of dream/s and reality. I started the conversation by indicating that life in essence is one figment of a continual dream and that dream is the true and permanent status of man kind. The purpose of my saying so becomes clear if one considers carefully the already existing evidences. In all revelations to humanity, one trend of describing life has been common in all belief systems. The common thing in all monothystic religions is 'pre-destination' of events and actions in our lives. First, there was predestination. Second, creation. Third, there would be death. Forth, there would be resurrection. Fifth, there would be permanence. So in this order, although it could mean that we were not created first as flesh and bones, our souls existed before the creation of bodies and minds. But with creation came what is called life. If life wasn’t there then it would mean we would have existed as a soul only and in dream. Dreams are not touchable, they exist in their own cosmic universe where souls escape to when they leave the bodies behind. So what I mean here is that dreams are the reality and life is just one figment of dreams among other things. We live we die and when we die our souls sleep till resurrected by Allah on the judgment day. When the souls are resurrected, if lucky, they will then exist in the truest dream. A dream that would last forever, one which all your needs will be met through thoughts and wishes. At this point my friend was becoming agitated by what I was saying and had question me doubtingly. The friend asked: “but how do you explain the inconsistency inherit in dreams, and the inability for one to remember them unlike in life that has memories?” To this question I answered: we cannot remember dreams that we have well for the basic fact that the now-ness of life is powerfully reflective in all capacities of our mind. We truly belong in dreams but because life is a test to the future goodness for our dreams, our minds develop adoptation to life and we become very focused and determined to pass the test that is present. When that test (life) – is over, meaning when death marks the end of the test, we may shift back to sleep and dreams. Life is simply a process by which God has created to test Adam and Eve’s worthiness of paradise, if we, being the sons and daughters of Adam and Eve’ pass the test before us now, then we will go back to our home, which is paradise. Adam and Eve’ were in paradise but were thrown out to life and earth to prove themselves. To be continued Insha-Allaah --- So my dear Nomads ... any thoughts on this issue?

Quite right Positive, I'll keep rowing my boat down the stream gently then... But the idea that nothing is the most powerful something is fascinating. Nothingness itself is host to other complexities of questions that if not asked carefully can lead one to the total oblivion of disbelief. It is one thing to see nothingness as something that is without mass or shape, and it is another to belief that everything that is something came into existence out of nothingness and by nothingness. The argument can carry its weight on the very fact that nothingness is the absolute contrast of being, and thus the two are parallel. However, in my opinion, I do belief that the parallel existence of the two factors were themselves made veto look so by a higher supreme Being. I believe nothingness is most powerful for the basic fact that Allah can say ‘be’ and that everything will be from nothingness. So, this means that we, human beings, may not comprehend in our imagination the possibility of nothingness becoming fleshed-up to form something. That is why we have faith in the One who created both factors and Allah alone is the possessor of such a power . It is a well-known fact that humanity, however clever or technologically advanced, has never succeeded in creating something from nothing. The basic truth is that all these new inventions we are witnessing never were comprised of nothingness; they were and always be something. No man can claim to have created something out of nothingness. I think it is for this reason we can say much about nothingness because only our creator has the power to create something out of nothingness.

Sophist, thanks for the good read sxb. You know, I have been pondering about nothingness for almost 15 years now, and I don't think I will stop pondering. As a young boy, I went to an old sufi who was a family friend to congratulate him a ciid mubaarak. After saying so and turning away, he replied 'same to you' adding, haven't you been given any Xaq ul' Ciid? I said 'yes I have been given Xaqul Ciid but I had to give it away to a runaway friend meaning I have "nothing" left now'. The oldman grinned and said, 'my son, NOTHING is the most powerful something'. Since then I have been confounded by the oldman's remarks. Till today I ponder.

Thanks for the contributions nomads. They were all superb. And may I add, I think we would have been in a better position if we concentrated on Socrates only. Afterall, he's the father of modern philosophy.
