  6. And the calaacal continues. What were these Kiikuuyo farmers expecting, that this drug will be sustainable for the decades to come as in the decades past. I remember sidaan camal u calaacalaayeen when Reer Dutch banned it. When Ingiriiska banned it. They should have planned for long term after those two bans. Miraa traders face bleak future as Somalia continue to lock them out Miraa farmers and sellers are staring at a bleak future in the key Somalia market if the Kenyan government does not move with speed to resolve a trade impasse with its neighbour. The hope of resumption of the trade in the biggest market crashed after Somalia exempted miraa from cargo allowed into the country after international flights resumed on August 3. Their hope was further dimmed after a delegation of traders and transporters dispatched to engage the Somali government last failed to unlock the impasse after officials demanded government-to-government talks. The trade in Somalia is also facing headwinds from anti-miraa crusaders who have taken advantage of the suspension induced by Covid-19 to intensify their campaign for a permanent ban. Goods from Somalia Traders who spoke to the Nation said their delegation was informed that the continued suspension of miraa was due to Kenya’s stance on goods from Somalia, coupled by Kenya Airways’ failure to resume flights to Mogadishu. According to Maua town miraa traders’ chairman Mohamed Qureshi, their delegation met government ministers and were upbeat they would resume business this week. “However, President Mohamed Farmaajo rejected our request to lift the suspension of miraa trade. We are aware that the decision is not because of Covid-19 but due to Kenya’s recent hard stance on imports from Somalia." "Recently, a lot of rice, sugar and fish from Somalia has been destroyed by Kenyan officials,” Mr Qureshi said. Alternative businesses He said traders who have been relying on the Somalia market are now considering venturing into alternative businesses to earn a living. “Since miraa was suspended in Somalia four months ago, some traders in Maua town are relying on well-wishers to survive. The situation is dire. The government should do something before we lose the only surviving market,” he pleaded. Nyambene Miraa Traders Association (Nyamita) Chairman Kimathi Munjuri accused the government of ignoring their pleas to intervene in Somalia, leading to loss of livelihoods. He confirmed that their last-ditch effort of sending a delegation of traders to Somalia has not borne fruit. Talks with Somalia “We reached out to the government way back in April to initiate talks with Somalia about the resumption of miraa trade. We were told that due to the inter-ministerial nature of the issue, it would be discussed in the Cabinet and a way forward given. We are shocked that nothing was done until Somalia extended the suspension of miraa business,” Mr Munjuri stated. He said there was hope for resumption of trade this week after the Finance ministry released guidelines for miraa traders but the President rejected the proposal on Friday. Nyambene Miraa Sacco Chairman Moses Lichoro said farmers will soon take to the streets to protest over the government’s silence. “Farmers who grow the varieties meant for the Somalia market have lost millions of shillings in the last four months. We will be holding demonstrations until the government listens to us,” Mr Lichoro said. Anti-miraa crusaders The Covid-19 pandemic has become a blessing in disguise for anti-miraa campaigners who are now hoping the suspension is not lifted. “Before Covid-19 came, there were attempts by the government in Somalia to start rehabilitating khat chewers and help traders venture into alternative businesses to prepare ground for a ban,” Mr Qureshi said. Traders have been using road and the sea to deliver about two trucks of miraa which has turned out to be expensive. A trader said it costs about Sh1.5 million to deliver miraa cargo by boat to Mogadishu, a journey that takes 11 days. According to data from the Ministry of Finance in Somalia, miraa was the third largest local revenue earner for the country in 2019 at USD16.6 million (Sh1.79 billion) in import tax. By May this year, the country had earned USD4.82 million (Sh521 million) from miraa imports. Daily Nation

  9. After failed Sacuudi and other Khaliij policies in the Muslim world, it is only Turkiga who stands strongly now to lead the Daarul Islaam, especially the Sunni Islaam. I hope the new Cismaaniyiinta bring Indonesia and Malaysia into this new Muslim isbaheysi as they did with Bakistaan, Liibiya, Yeman and Soomaaliya. ___________________ Turkey may have reclaimed the leadership of Sunni Islam from Saudi Arabia The Hagia Sofia Grand Mosque was opened for public worship last Friday for the first time in 86 years following a top court’s ruling that the historic building, originally a church, had been converted into a museum illegally by the founder of modern Turkey’s secular state. I had expected a favourable result before the landmark ruling was officially announced earlier this month and decided to witness the historic event unfold. The last time I visited the Hagia Sophia was about 10 years ago when it was a museum. This time, approximately 350,000 people joined me, most of them within the vicinity of the mosque, while about 1,000 prayed inside. The congregation included President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was greeted with resounding applause as he was shown entering the mosque on a large outdoor screen. I managed to enter the mosque myself a couple days later, as it was open to visitors, both Muslim and non-Muslim alike. While the wearing of facemasks was mandatory due to the coronavirus pandemic, social distancing at the momentous event last Friday was practically non-existent; this was unsurprising given the sheer number of people there, including many foreigners like myself. It is safe to say that for the first time in many a long year, Istanbul’s iconic Blue Mosque was overshadowed by the neighbouring building, upon which all Ottoman era mosques were modelled. The reversion of the Hagia Sophia to a mosque, a role it fulfilled for almost five hundred years, is the latest development as Erdogan reasserts Turkey’s status as a regional power. Some believe it is an attempt to establish a neo-Ottoman empire, while turning away from the West and the legacy of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk who founded the secular Turkish Republic following the fall of the Ottoman Empire in 1923. On 24 July of that year, the Treaty of Lausanne resulted in the Western powers and their allies recognising modern Turkey’s borders. Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque’s re-opening was the 97th anniversary of the treaty’s signing. Such no doubt deliberate symbolism also permeated last Friday’s sermon. The head of Turkey’s highest religious authority, the Diyanet, Ali Erbas carried an Ottoman sword as he ascended the pulpit instead of the more commonly used wooden staff. Imam Erbas later explained his use of a sword to journalists: “This is a tradition in mosques that are a symbol of conquest. For 481 years without interruption, [imams] went with a sword [to the minbar]. Insha’Allah [God Willing], we will continue this tradition from now on.” In the build up to the sermon, the Qur’an was recited, as were salutations towards Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), his family and companions, reminiscent of a popular nasheed from the early 2000s by Sami Yusuf. As they echoed melodiously both inside and outside the mosque, it struck me that this would never happen in Saudi Arabia, where a puritanical interpretation of Sunni Islam, often referred to as Wahhabism, is the state religion and practices deemed to be “innovations” are shunned. The Saudis fought against the Ottomans and have been vying for leadership of the Sunni Islamic world ever since the creation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932. The Ottoman interpretation of Islam was on the other end of the religious spectrum, with Sufism playing a big role in Ottoman society, despite a conservative religious establishment. Over these few days in Turkey I got the impression that the 300-year struggle for the leadership of Sunni Islam appears to be edging back in Turkey’s favour, with the Hagia Sophia move being the latest projection of Ankara’s soft power. It was as if last Friday’s sermon announced Turkey as a serious leadership contender, as fractured as Sunni Islam may be. While Riyadh’s devastating five-year war on Yemen has tarnished its image among Muslims, Ankara’s military interventions in Syria and Libya appear to have the support of many in non-Turkish Muslim circles. 10. Turkish spokesman, 30 envoys visit Hagia Sophia Mosque A senior Turkish official visited the Grand Hagia Sophia Mosque on Thursday where he answered questions posed by 30 ambassadors and gave information about the history of the structure. Ibrahim Kalin underlined the historical importance of turning Hagia Sophia into a mosque after 86 years. “Today, we witnessed again how impressive this place in terms of its historical identity and artistic aspects,” according to Kalin, who said it is a very important place in the political, cultural, religious and aesthetic history of the Ottoman Empire. “Especially after Hagia Sophia being a mosque, we do not have the slightest hesitation about preserving the historical and cultural heritage and identity of it,” he added. On July 24, Friday prayers in the Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque marked the first Muslim acts of worship there in 86 years. Hagia Sophia served as a church for 916 years until the conquest of Istanbul, and a mosque from 1453 to 1934 -- nearly 500 years -- and most recently as a museum for 86 years. In 1985, Hagia Sophia was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Besides being a mosque, Hagia Sophia is also among Turkey's top tourism destinations and will remain open for domestic and foreign visitors. Xigasho

  14. Somali artists release UN-backed song on COVID-19 threats Prominent Somali artists said Sunday they have released UN-backed new song to raise awareness about the dangers of COVID-19 in Somalia, which remains a threat across the country. Somali musician Aar Maanta and music producer Waqal Studio announced a new collaboration with some of the most popular artists in the Somali music industry on a group song which encourages people to follow public health guidelines by staying two meters apart, regularly washing hands with soap and staying at home if possible. "This project has given Somali artists the opportunity to work together and forge new partnerships and we will not stop here," Maanta said in a joint statement issued in Mogadishu on Sunday. "Together we will defeat COVID-19 and continue to help our people and be part of other important national campaigns," he added. The song and music video is supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The song is expected to reach millions of people across the country and the diaspora through promotion on radio, TV and through the singers' individual social media networks. Hodan Ahmed Hashi, who demonstrates how to wear a mask in the video, said this unique collaboration brings together some of the most influential Somali artists to help people stay vigilant, because COVID-19 has not gone away and is even getting worse in many places. "The need for our collective voice has never been greater and we hope this special song, as well as advice and guidance from health professionals, will save lives by reminding people that COVID-19 is still dangerous and still with us," said Hashi. This collaboration, one of the first of its kind among Somali artists, was written by Abdirahman Fili and features leading singers Suldan Seeraar, Hodan Abdirahman, Cabdi Hani, Yurub Geenyo, Abdirisaq Anshax and Nadiira Nayruus. The UNDP said the initiative is the latest part of its extensive campaign to take advantage of Somalia's rich oral culture by engaging poets, comedians, singers and other artists to make sure people receive crucial health messages. "It's never an easy task to get people to make changes in their daily lives to fight an invisible threat," said Jocleyn Mason, UNDP Somalia's Resident Representative. "But artists like Aar Maanta can turn health messages into something magical that people will want to listen to and are more likely to take on board," Mason added. The UNDP said its campaigns have already reached more than 10 million people via TV and radio broadcasts and through online platforms. Somalia, which has instituted measures to contain the possible spread of COVID-19 pandemic including closing schools and banning large gatherings, has so far confirmed 3,227 cases, 1,728 recoveries and 93 deaths as of Aug.5. 16. Aniga iyo adiga waa ognahay Xabashi will never recognize secessionists laakiin they will keep milking them and secessionists believe like cunug hal jir ah camal since 1991. Now, it seems Kiikuuyo too have started this same play for the secessionists in order to sell Kiikuuyo jaad. Secessionists are once again failing for this. Kiikuuyos would be the last to recognize any region in Soomaaliya as an independent for they do know too well the consequences. But they will start milking the secessionists like sac iska jiifto.
  17. ITOOBIYA oo soo saartay go’aan meesha ka saaray rajadii ay qabtay Somaliland Wasaaradda arrimaha dibadda ee dalka Itoobiya ayaa shaaca ka qaaday in aysan aqoonsaneyn Somaliland, islamarkaana ay taageereyso midninada Soomaaliya, hadalkaasi oo lama filaan ku noqday xukuumadda Hargeysa. Afhayeenka wasaaradda arrimaha dibadda ee wadanka Itoobiya, Ambassador Dina Mufti ayaa meesha ka saaray in dalkiisa uu aqoonsan yahay Somaliland oo tan 1991-kii raadineyso madax banaani gooni ah & ictiraaf, si ay uga go’do Soomaaliya inteeda kale. “Arrinta ku saabsan Somaliland, waxay qeyb ka tahay midowga Soomaliya, lamana aqoonsana, warka ah Itoobiya iyo dalalka ayaan aqoonsan, ma aha wax run ah.” ayuu yiri Dina Mufti. Sidoo kale wuxuu intaasi raaciyey in Itoobiya ay markasto ixtiraameyso midnimada iyo qaranimada Soomaaliya, islamarkaana ay la macaamileyso xukuumadda Muqdisho. “Innaga oo ka ambaqaadeynta ixtiraamka midnimada iyo qarannimada dal waxaa la dhaqannaa Soomaali mid ah, waxaan ku taageernaa in dib loosoo celiyo xisiloonida halkaas.” ayuu sii raaciyey afhayeenka wasaaradda arrimaha dibadda Itoobiya. Somaliland oo xuduud la leh Itoobiya ayaa muddo dheere xiriir dhow la laheyd Itoobiya, balse wuxuu xiriirkaas xumaaday, markii ay xukuumadda Muuse Biixi Cabdi ay qeyb ka noqotay loolanka u dhexeeya wadamada Itoobiya iyo Masar ee ku aadan webiga Nile. Si kastaba ha’ahaatee hadalka ka soo yeeray xukuumadda Addis Ababa ayaa ku soo aadaya, xilli uu dhowaan soo shaac-baxday qorshe ay wado xukuumadda Qaahira oo rabta inay saldhig milatari ay ka dhisato magaalada Berbera ee waqooyiga Soomaaliya.

  20. Kenyan Miraa Flights Reportedly Banned In Somalia Kenyan khat (miraa) planes have reportedly been banned temporarily in Somalia, until Kenyan authorities allow commercial passenger flights from Somalia to land in the country. Sources from Somalia indicate that the temporary ban was ordered by President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo personally. This now leaves Ethiopia as the biggest exporter of khat into the country, an industry that mints billions for Kenyan businesses. On July 30, Kenya announced resumption of international passenger flights, announcing 11 destinations that left out its neighbours thought to be adversely affected by Covid-19 pandemic. In a communiqué announced by Transport CS James Macharia, China, South Korea, Japan, Canada, Uganda, France, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Switzerland and Morocco who have mild and limited community transmission were allowed. Somalia aims to use the move to arm twist Kenya to allow passenger flights from Somalia, just like it happened in Tanzania. Last week, Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority Director General Hamza cancelled Kenya Airways’ (KQ) clearance to fly into the country, after they were left out in the list. “The Authority regrets to inform you that, on a reciprocal basis, the Tanzanian Government has decided to nullify its approval for Kenya Airways flights between Nairobi and Dar/Kilimanjaro/Zanzibar effective August 1, 2020 until further notice,” the letter read in part. Transport CS James Macharia was forced to announce that travellers from Tanzania would be allowed into Kenyan soil with immediate effect. “Travelers from Tanzania can come in as early as today. We never stopped those flights. This very minor issue has been sorted out and we believe that if not today, by tomorrow we shall find Kenya Airways flying again to Tanzania,” said CS Macharia. The impasse is yet to be resolved. Xigasho

Laakiin tani waa inaysan ku imaan xasiloonida Ethiopia. ” Wararkii u dambeeyay ayaa sheegaya in Masar ay isku dayeyso in ay saldhig militari ka sameysato Somaliland. Dabayaaqadii bishii Luulyo, wefti ka socda Masar ayaa la kulmay madaxweynaha Somaliland, Muuse Biixi Cabdi, waxaana la sheegay inay ka wada hadleen in Masar ka sameysato xero militari oo ah gudaha Somaliland. Falanqeeyayaasha qaar ayaa u arka tallaabada Masar mid aargudasho ah oo ka dhan ah dowladda federalka Soomaaliya, oo horey u taageertay xuquuqda ay Itoobiya ka leedahay Nile. Xigasho
  22. @Saalax, where is that image of secessionists eagerly lining up to bow to their Xabashi master?
  23. Muuse Muqayil in his usual deep marqaan session came up another ultimate own goal by alienating their Xabashi master they have worshipped since 1991. What another massive own goal for the wretched secessionists. I guess no more pugrimage to Adisababa. I guess that already stopped. _______________ Ethiopia does not recognise Somaliland-spokesman Ethiopia has dismissed claims it recognizes Somaliland as an independent state noting it stands for the unity of Somalia. “Somaliland is part of the union of Somalia. It is not recognized. The news that Ethiopia and other countries do recognize it is not true,” Foreign Affairs spokesman Dina Mufti has said. Mufti added, “As a matter of respecting the unity and sovereignty of a country, we are treating Somalis as one. We support the restoration of stability there.” The remarks follow intense diplomatic interests in Somaliland that has seen Egypt and Ethiopia make forays into the breakaway following disputes over the refilling of the GERD dam. Somaliland and Taiwan announced in early July establishment of diplomatic ties which has since seen both sides appoint representatives to each other’s territories. Ethiopia has for a long time maintained close relations with Somaliland especially during the reign of TPLF prior to the coming of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed who has gravitated towards Mogadishu.
