  1. the crossed eyes and pointed ears...........thats a bit scary
  2. I've learned more languages than you could shake a stick at Who are you telling! A few years back, i took french for three years( and I had what I would call my own personal tutor), and now you cant even get me to ask the basic " get-to-know" you questions(how old r u, where do u live, etc)... When I went to school in Holland, I knew Dutch fairly well( conversationally that is, it was still pretty difficult for me to read and write it for some reason), and now I forgot how to say Hi!! Its getting harder and harder for me to learn languages now too.. When I was younger and went to Somalia, it took less than a few weeks before I nailed it, and i knew the language like the back of my hand...but when i went back a two summers ago , I was mocked, mimicked, looked down upon with my " american accent." The only language I know well is English now. I'm going on my second year of Arabic( but that doesn't look good) and I hope it doesnt take long for me to larn the swahili language( now that I'v gotten another personal tutor)
  3. I dont think its the career that's morally wrong, but the person engaging in ummoral/unethical acts is... How is becoming a lawyer Haraam? If your doing whats right, and youdont let greed drive you, then I dont' see the problem? There are crooked doctors, cops, entrepenuers, but thats doesn't allow you or anyone else to give the whole field a bad name...

Well , I'm glad you understand me....but to answer your question, there were times in my life, when i dealt with what I felt to be, empty-headed fools. See many of the friends that I have that dont label themselves as African-Americans, see me as African-American...and some of them dont. I find it hard sometimes to change the minds of those less willing too, and I have my own opinions on them. See, some of the reponses I get from those that dont want to see me as an African-American feel that they can base their argument on our distictive difference. For instance my hair, culture, religion. But for some odd reason, I'm Somalian. And I'm not sure if its out of bitterness, because I know my true nationality, but I can't help to see it as something very sad. But I'm not going to get into the whole story with you
  5. so my point is why are we calling 911, by acting like it's good thing yes i understand if the situation go'es out of hand may be but not like this sick dump Retarded, pple calling 911 to take advantage of it Well then i guess we do understand each other....I'm not sure what your example did to argue with mines, but you do understand me when i say that, some instances do call for 911, and I wouldn't hesitate to use it, or advise someone else to.....and I knew of an instance, where a friend of mine( who was Somali)got out of a real mess when she called 911 garab tuujiye i do understand your point, but i want you to understand something as well. I know of the differences between me and your average " African-American". I acknowledge that I'm Somalian, but I also acknowledge that I'm African, and not because of the same reasons the African Americans do, but just simply because I am African as well. I'm not pushing aside my somalian culture in any way, so dont' mistake that with my decision with categorizing myself as an African-American. Qac Qac already in Toronto areas u see the somalies killing each other, somalies dropping out of high schools, gangs, drugs.. hello ring a bell sis I'm not relating myself to these actions.....i have my reasons for choosing to be labeled as an African-Afican, and I didnt see anything wrong with that...I think it becomes a problem when people try to relate those actions with their race/religion/nationality... What does being African-American, or African-Candian have to do with gangs, drugs. If we start to label certain identities with stereotypes, then the problem lies within the societies. I hope you understand me.... I'm not going to stp labeling myself as an African-American, just because of the misguided, irresponsible, uneduated fools that that engage inthese acts, or because of society that feeds into these actions and create the stereotypes and generalizations that exist today. one more thing sister, princess-sexy.. we should call the white ppl, Euro-Americans too. coz whites are from Europe, and they too came to America.. it is not like the white's own america more then the black... so why they only call themselves americans, and not Euro-American? when u say, afro american u r saying, they don't belong in america by reminding them where they come from, and they also thing like that. that's why u don't call them Euro_Americans, coz they'll tell u, they belong to America... Now that takes us to a whole other issue.....A few of my African-America friends dont want to label themselves as such because they feel that they have just about the same rights as the whites do who claim themselves as Americans. And i agree. Thats the whole reason i claim myself as an American as well. I was born here, raised here and benefited from many of the opportunities...So why is it, the blacks, who were forced here aren't able to claim this land the way the whites do. I'm not sure? But that doesn't mean I agree with it. I have my reasons for identifying myself as who I am, and others do too. If the whites feel that they want to call them selves Americans, then I say let them, but the African-Americans should have that right as well.
  6. Great tip! There have been so many "police impersonations" going on, especially in Georgia lately, and this bit of info, no doubt, will help.....
  7. Do any other sista's have the same problems with shopping for well-fitting clothes? yes, and its gotten to the point where I'm just going to have to go to and get these pants cut up. i shop at the GAP and Express a lot, and thought the pants may fit me well, I can't seem to get them to fit me length-wise. They are either too long,( especially express!!) or capri look-alikes. I have tried to just fold them, but I hate that look. I'm constantly told that I look like I go to high-school, which is a huge turn-off for me. The only pants I find that do trully fit are dress pants, and I bought most of mine from Canadian stores. And i rarely dress up, I'm more of the casuel wearing type... Now on to exercising tips...Though I would love to be petite,I'm not,so I've learned to accept my thick thighs, butt and hips...but what I am starting to get annoyed about is my stomach. I think the main source of my problem is my eating habits, but for some reason I just can't seem to gain the will-power to stop. But it also has something to do with my energy levels. I sleep for than 10 hrs, and I'm not very active. For about a month now, though, I've tried to do 20-30 crunchesa night( cause I want to change to be in my belly area), but instead of seeing any decrease in the size, I've only noticed it getting tighter, which is not what I want! So I guess whatI'm trying to get at is, I would love some exercising techniques that would allow me to have a flat stomach yet again!
  8. Your right garab tuujiye.... with sex on the dominant front in much of our pervasive mediums, it becomes very hard to try and instill our cultural/religious behaviors/habits or what-not. I think boy friend and girl friend relationship has changed so much as the way we had in Somalia. It was more deenia and had some of our beautiful culture. Yes it has, and it wouldn't surprise me any if it were changing back home as well.....One of the differences I have observed is back home, many of the Somali's tend to "date" for the purposes of establishing some sort of "pre-marital" relationship......However, not speaking for everyone, some of us in can notice that living in Western societies, the purposes of dating doesn't really have a specified goal to it....If the couple ends up getting married, its seen more as plus, rather than the intended goal. But this surely doesn't speak for everyone, nor does it for the Somalian example. I think one of the roles as a parent, or other immediate family member, is to make sure we try to explain these differences, and most importantly educate both the cultural aspects and religous aspects on issues like these.
  9. can you keep your stuff to yourself, we don'twant to hear your craaap stuff here, and stop posting the same thing into every thread you ignorant barbeque What makes you think we want to hear your 'craaap' stuff?? Why dont you keep your pessimistic views to yourself...Have you ever heard of the saying, "If you dont have something nice to say, Don't say anything at all"....How would you know that there aren't young girls out here that are going through situations like this, and that are searching for help? If you can't accept it then try to understand it, if you can't understand it, then try to tolerate it....but if you refuse to do either then thats fine as well...as long as you dont try to censor it.......
  10. Foreign-Educated Somalis are the source of somali problemes, they send money to somalia so that people there would be able to purchase weapons and cont.. killing.. Are you kidding me with all of this! That is not the case with many Somali's. Many of us, whether you ignorantly fail to recognize this send money back home so that our families would be able to attain the basic needs they need to survive. i can't belive you would even insult those kind-hearted people who are willing to give up those "high-end' jobs to help out the less fortunate.. p.s. i dont believe that help should only be granted to a specific group of people....But what exactly are you doing?Aren't you helping out those fellow Cambodians....I would have guessed that someone like you would have some sort of understanding....Couldn't you in a sense be considered foreign-educated as well?
  11. People are really driven to some horrible tactics..... Due to the nature of the crime police have yet to release what exactly Mr >Mallaserdu has been charged with Attempted murder......
  12. is ok to call 911 on your family if they abuse you? Huh? AND what is wrong with this? girls all want romantic life, waiting for mr. right. I agree that its really a waste of time to wait for anyone(ms.right, mr.right)..But wanting a romantic life, I dont see whats wrong with that..And if your trying to imply that this "fad" has just happened to somalis who've migrated to western nations, then your wrong. My mother, along with many of my other elders who were raised back home have all desired romance, and I dont think there is any way to classify that as being right or wrong. now they start calling the black ppl in canada Afri canadians again, whats wrong with this? I identify myself as being African American, and not in any way to identify myself with the African Americans who are the descendants of the slaves in the Americas', but because not only am I Somalian, but I am also an American citizen, and I beleve that to be my preference and no one else's. Some of my friends and cousins who live in Canada place themselves in the African'Canadian category as well...and I belive that its also their preference as well, and how they chose to ientify themselves with isn't any business of yours.
  13. I don't see what him having to be muslim or an arab has to do with this situation. If something were to have happened, god forbid, its not the arab race, or the muslim religion that will be prosecuted...its the guy who was at fault. Would it have made a difference if it was a White Jew, or a Black Christian, or an Asian Buddhist? His race or religion shouldn't put him an any more of fault that he's already put himself in, nor should it give him any favors?<-----this directed to you Pearl "...i would have reported him had he not been a muslim…." Even though you've changed your statement now, I really hope you dont sincerely mean that if something were to ever happen.
  14. Innaa Lilaah wa innaa Ilaahi raajiicuun I'm wondering where I can find a little more information on this...These articles dont seem to tell me how he died, and exactly what was the "incident' that had occurred in this "fantastic" school?
  15. well, I've never heard of make-up being haraam, but I could be wrong, so Somali-Chick, i would greatly appreciate it if you could try and support that with something.. What ever happened to natural beauty? Has it become extinct like the dino's? Going natural is wonderful , and you can say that its all about being comfortable with yourself......but unfortunately, I sometimes deal with unwanted blemishes that I would rather have covered up ( at least in public!!)
  16. 11. You sit on AOL for 6 hours waiting for that certain special person to sign on. How did you know!!!
  17. Were you using the story as an example to support the claim.." ends do not justify means"?Because thats where i think the problem is.. See with your example i dont think the problem lies within the "means"...i think its the "end"...Now with the other examples...the guy who's trying to provide food for his family, or the woman trying to get ahead in the work field...what do those "ends" have in common? They're reasonable, and right....or Just. But what is so just about telling lies in the first part. Thats what I'm trying to get cleared up... In the exmaples above, do you agree that the problems were in how they went about things...rather then what they accomplished...? If you do, then you will understand me when i say that, the problems were with what you wanted to accomplish...there is nothing morally right about spreading lies in the first part... Coppish
  18. Does that not depend on WHAT you're selling? If I published a book on Somali tribes, detailing how tribe A is a bunch of theiving murdering low-lifes and Tribe B can never be trusted because they'll sell you out to the highest bidder and kill you in your sleep and Tribe C is known for having homosexuals and prostitutes. If I wrote that book and mass produced it through Goldstein and Walberg for Cash, you're saying that fine because it's just a means to an end, right? I'm a little lost here....what "end" are you trying to accomplish here...It seems to me that your motive is just to get out your opinions about Tribe A, B and C? So having the book be produced by Goldstein is doing what???.....The saying states that " your ends dont justify your means?...but how were your ends morally right to begin with.....In most cases, the means of how you go about things are wrong, but in this case, you were wrong to even write the book?.... well at least the contents in the book were... I'm probably confused with the topic but I disagree with your statement playa: "Your goal or what you want to accomplish does not validate how you get there." i think you were just a bit confused there Kaafi....because you pretty much have the idea here For instance, providing for your family and making sure they're healthy, doesnt mean you go and sell crack. There are always alternatives that one can pursue. What happened to going to school and earning a degree that pays? The only way I can make you, and the rest that might be a little hazy about the topic, understand is just reiterate what Diamond_Eyez stated As with the young lady using her sexuality as means to climb the corporate ladder....or the young man selling crack to provide for his family.....if the methods are immoral and unethical, however the outcome may be, then it doesn't make it right....I really hope I cleared it up for some....Because when I come back to disagree with this statement, I want to make sure I haven't left anyone behind
  19. Why do you tell everyone when i tell u my heart is tik tik and my eyes are blik blik when i see u and u make a joke out of it? LOL WHY my dear Queen? when will u learn to accpet me as i am like i accepted u as u are.... Maybe your going after the wrong "Queen"??
  20. "Hargab baan haystaa ama aniga waa jirrantahay" (I have cold), "Shaadhkaygii guriguu joogaa" (My shirt is at home), "Berri iskuul waa haystaa " (I have school tomorrow.) LOL, whats wrong with this somali??...I talk like this all the time
  21. Wow, everyone is getting married nowadays, or maybe its just the people I know..from my cousins, to friends, and aunts....and now a wonderful sister from our SOL family....**wiping tears of joy** Congratulations sister,( Xafsa, Flying_still, Caakifah) I dont know how I missed this topic  ......I hope you and your mate live happily ever after!!! Send me pics of the firstborn...!!!!
  22. but u have to understand that there has been reports that the numbers of young people having sexual intercourse in Somalia has increased...and u surely can't tell them to stop what they're doing. Promoting condom use isnt might not necessarily decrease this epidemic from spreading either... If you look at some of the most hard hit countries( in Africa, of course), you'll realize that they have a wide availability of condoms ( i.e: Sudan, Kenya, South Africa)....and its still rising to this day....what does that tell you? You see, for years people have had this ideology that promoting abstinence and fidelity would turn out to be a failed method...and who were these people making up this ideaologies.....the Western Nations  ....Instead of coming up with strategies to fight this disease that we believe would be more practical...sometimes it might just be better to go back to the religion......Uganda, At one point in time, it was one of the hardest hit nations in africa fighting the epidemic.....but when Musevic( i know thats not how you spell it) and his administration( and religous institutions) came up with the ABC's method( Abstinence, Be faithful, and as a last resort, Condom use), they proved to the world that Education is the best tool when it comes to fighting AIDS.....and you know they did this years before western nations intervened....their HIV/AIDS rates decreased significantly!!..So I totally agree with the Somalian government in banning the sells of condoms....We really need to stop thinking like these western nations..and making them believe that they have the answers to our problems
  23. I didnt even know that this was going on....You can't help but get the feeling that there is some sort of an atheist uprising....rather than being fair and equal to everyone, they're trying to accomodate everyones interest( which i can't help but be a little suspicuous about, b/c i doubt many muslims had a say in this) and when they figured out that these interests just cant be compromised with, they disregard them altogether, and ban any type of religous display!! I can't even belive that this is happening...In Europe of all places, where Human Rights is one of their top priorities..I guess they just dont belive that this falls into that category.... ostentatious religious signs that "constitute an act of pressure, provocation, proselytism or propaganda So what exactly did those teenagers do to fall into this category...??? As far as the questions go..... What do you guys think of the assertion that the hijab is more a 'political symbol' than a religious one As many have stated, we all know that unlike the actions taken by the west, Religion and politics come hand in hand... the Hijab, as Ameenah stated, " is a window to the inner you ", therefore, its a reflection of your belief, certainty, and faith....And though I;m not condeming the idea of it being used as a tool( politically), the hijab should be worn for the purposes of obeying Allah... When it comes to decision-making processes...they are rarely ever transparent....so whatever's driving these decisions beats me....well not entirely,b/c as they say, actions speak louder than words?? And the actions taken by these nations seem to be screaming something unheard by the public( or so they think) So was this decision based solely on the idea of secularizing( if that is a word)the nation(s)?? Or was there something else behind this?...( someone is feeling threatened, and they need to come out of the closet( if i can use that phrase)..
  24. "Furthering human progress is through women’s progress" I read a few of the articles, but I dont have time right now to discuss, so Ill try and come back on here to post my views on this later
