Press Release

****** National Liberation Front (ONLF)

6 December 2008

The Shebelle media Network published today a claim by the Al-shabab group operating in Southern Somalia in which they stated that they have attacked ONLF forces in the Lower Jubba province of Somalia near the Kenyan border.

This claim in utterly false as ONLF does not have a military presence let alone bases in Somalia.

It has been the practice of factions and warlords alike in Somalia to blame the ONLF whenever local resistance flares against their heavy handedness and archaic policies in order to gain sympathy from the Ethiopian regime. This happened before when the Administrations in Hargeisa and Bosasso fought over the Sool region. The Hargeisa group blamed the ONLF claiming that it assisted Bosasso administration. Ex-Prime Minister of the Transitional Somali Government Mr. Geedi did the same and claimed that ONLF forces were operating around Bali-Dogle airport in order to gain further support from the Ethiopian regime of Meles Zenawi. On the same token, Bare Hiraale who controlled the southern port city of Kismayu until he was outsted, recently claimed that the ONLF had a hand in his ousting.

Regional elders, who gave interview today to the BBC Somali service, have condemned the Al-shabab for their attack against local pastoralists in the area who were to opposed their exorbitant taxation and draconian administration. The Elders confirmed that ONLF had no involvement in any of these activities in the region.

The ONLF struggles for the liberation of the Somali people of ****** and has no design or interest in the quagmire in Somalia.

The ONLF continues to be very concerned about the state of affairs in Somalia and calls upon all parties involved the Somali conflict to stop the bloodshed and opt for a political solution to their differences and to stand united against the illegal invasion of Somalia by Ethiopia.

Sheikh Xassan Yacquub, spokesman of the Kismaayo administration, says there can be no armed group besides them in any area under their control. They gave this group a warning and when they did not heed, forcibly disarmed them.

I don't get this. This is really weird. Why attack the ONLF and break their back? Doesn't that help the Ethiopians which Al-Shabaab is fighting against?

May be to them anything from Ethiopia is Ethiopian and hence an enemy regardless of what.

In real terms I doubt Shabaab clashed with ONLF - it does not add up.

Xiin, I do not disbelief you sxb. But I posted a Ras Kamboni spokesman and Sheikh Xassan Yacquub of the Kismaayo administration saying the same thing. Are you saying their account of the event is wrong and if so, what is the true account?
