Kiikuuyos are happy, too:

Optimism grows for return of Kenya miraa to Somalia

Miraa traders have expressed optimism that the regime change in Somalia on Sunday will revive trade relations with Kenya and salvage the dwindling fortunes of khat.

Somalia closed access to its market for Kenya in 2020 following a political fallout. The ban led to a loss of more than 50 tonnes of Kenyan khat valued at more than Sh20 million a day.

The return of former president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who was re-elected into office on Sunday night following an intense contest with the incumbent Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo, has raised optimism of a resumption of normalcy in relations with Somalia.

“As an industry, we are happy that Mohamed Farmaajo has been voted out. The Kenya-Somalia relations worsened during his reign. We hope the channels of dialogue will re-open under President Mohamud,” Nyambene Miraa Traders Association (Nyamita) chairman Kimathi Munjuri said.

Somalia currently allows Ethiopia to export its khat to the country, locking out Kenya in a deal in which Mogadishu sells its fish to Addis Ababa.

Mr Munjuri accused the Kenyan government of mishandling the relations between the two neighbours. “The next government should employ a better strategy that will not cost us business. We should also separate diplomatic rows from trade,” he said.

Further, the Nyamita chairman said traders were ready to negotiate with the Somalia government to secure business privately.
He noted that the loss of the market had cost the country and miraa farmers billions of shillings leading to dire socio-economic consequences.

Traders in Bakara forced to pay double tax or close

Government forces arrested nine traders on Saturday and closed several business centers in Bakara, Somalia's largest open-air market, after traders refused to pay extra taxes without being informed in writing by the Ministry of Finance.

Traders staged a demonstration in front of their shuttered businesses on the market's first and second streets, demanding that the government intervene and fix the excessive tax problem.

"People from the Howlwadag district administration have asked us to pay money, claiming it is taxed, and when we tell them we have already paid, they arrest the traders and order the business centers to close." One trader remarked, "We demand that the new president and those who worked for the previous government fix this issue."

During the demonstration, another trader stated, "I believe our businesses are being extorted. This is why they have forced our closure."

According to one of the traders, Finance Minister Abdirahman Duale Beileh and the traders have already agreed that the Bakaaro market tax will be levied at the port because the government will not enter the Bakara market for security reasons.

He added that since we are licensed importers, we have been paying the tax at the port.

Al Shabaab operatives regularly target tax collectors in Bakara Market.

The traders requested that the Ministry of Finance intervene in the Bakara market standoff.

Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was inaugurated as the 10th president of Somalia Thursday in a colourful ceremony in Mogadishu as he is expected to appoint his Prime Minister in the coming days.

Mushkilada ugu wayn , waxa weeye marka ummadu kala garan weeydo, Sax iyo khalad,

Imagine allowing business to import freely opioid drugs in America?

Khat creates major social problem, health, poverty, crimes , domestic violence,  and so on, and we are happily importing.

It is a common sense,  ban it from anywhere, and if smuggled still, it will not be as big and freely available as now.

Governments around the world, work everyday how can you improve basic conditions  of the people, introducing laws to protect people and deter crime , from speeding tickets, to banning drugs.

Some isbaaro iyo qalalaaso ku soo barbaaray wrongly think dowlad equals shaqsi. Hence, last dowlad must be Farmaajo and if a new dowlad comes, everything must be started from scratch. Waa yaab.

One example is ninkii sarkaalka sirdoonka ahaa qabtay the illegal 10 million dollars from Imaaraadka at the airport maanta is under house arrest and relieved from his duties at the airport, instead of being rewarded. This happened days within Mahad Geeljire's reign at NISA. Dowlad Imaaraadka sababtee saan u sameyneyso waxee tahay no future sarkaal to dare to take heroic actions like that.

Arrinta jaadkana waa saas, waxee moodaan inuu Farmaajo shaqsigiisa u fiicneyd. Fiicnaan lahaydaa markee diyaaradda Kiikuuyada noqoneyso lagu raro inta jaad kiilo ee keeneen qiimo u dhigmo, let it be vegetables, fruits or seafood.
