I can understand spending money on the madax dhaqameed and the other power brokers in Garowe and elsewhere but what will the ordinary man and woman in Puntland gain from this horse trading? They can neither vote in this "election" process nor have any other say in this matter, do they? How will the cash being spent in this political market trickling down to the small man in the villages?

The little villages are the ones that influence the elder/rep of their area.

Amazingly Puntland is more democratic and wider base for the system/representative democracy.

The rep/elder cannot vote against his village. That is the trick.

Please explain to me how one clan elder represent the diverse views of all his clansmen? As with all the communities across the world, if a section of the village is impressed by candidate A and the remaining people are in favour of candidates B, C, D, etc, how will one elder reconcile all those differing views?

To reconcile and align differing views is precisely the reason why we have Clan Elders in the first place:

Clan Elders only forward a clan’s chosen candidate— only after due deliberation, and consideration has been undertaken by his tribesmen. Naturally there’s is going to be a lot of competition and grievances, which leads to some horse trading or some other form of placation.

There is only one chair so whether in Britain, America or anywhere there is no system where all opinions can be at the top at one time.

But what you have a really superior method is that example: A school is priority of a village or a water well..They might be promised by every candidate for this, but they know who will do what he promised at least the rep/elder knows this. The elder will choose one that will do this and by that he also cements his being rep/elder for ever...

In the scheme of things this is actually more representative, very close to the people and relies on influencing both the people and the rep/elder at the same time. Its quite good.

It also connects the tradition and modernism at the same time. Its a system that works for a professor from Harvard and a nomad from Qandala.

Clan elder/rep voting system is the closest thing to perfection in Somali doorasho system at this time. No one dies on election day and there is no dispute about walagu shubtay and other nonsense that leads to years of strive and instability. If it is not broken, don't fix it.

Absolutely.

What is democracy other than some formulae agreed by the people. Having been the most advanced Somali society of having a kingdom in the past centuries also comes into play and helps.

LOL...This is must be the funniest (s)election season that Pirate-land have seen in some time now. But, why do this absurd stunt of dressing-up what ever protection details you have with you in this way? It really is a comedy stuff.

One wishes we have a similar sort of US's Saturday's Night-live (SNL) sort of piss-taking program in the Somali political world. Or at least the Somali's TVs channels should try a comedy of that sort. Given that this (s)election process in Pirate-land seems to be affording us enough laughable material to make so many shows of that kind from it.

Lool, That is what I thought as soon as I saw picture of this "candidate" with a military camouflage. He really looks the late Hugo Chavez so uncannily.

Lets hope he wins for we could be having similarly endless TV's entertainment Mr Chavez used to give to the poor Venezuelans on a nightly basis.

And this time around, of course, our Pirate-land's Chavez will be saying things like "any minute now, I am going to drive Somaliland into the sea" kind of tendentious and braggadocio-laden sort of silly spleen.

I can't really wait for that sort of nightly entertainment on You-tube, really.

^^^^ In other words, they are the "true definition" and the "living manifestation" of this little ditty:

".......Waa Fuley Faan-badan oo Fantasiya iyo Faatadhugleyn kala Fac-dhiga Fool-eriska iyo Fal-Rageedka Fariid Ficliyo ......."
