  3. DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – The world's tallest skyscraper has unexpectedly closed to the public a month after its lavish opening, disappointing tourists headed for the observation deck and casting doubt over plans to welcome its first permanent occupants in the coming weeks. Electrical problems are at least partly to blame for the closure of the Burj Khalifa's viewing platform — the only part of the half-mile high tower open yet. But a lack of information from the spire's owner left it unclear whether the rest of the largely empty building — including dozens of elevators meant to whisk visitors to the tower's more than 160 floors — was affected by the shutdown. The indefinite closure, which began Sunday, comes as Dubai struggles to revive its international image as a cutting-edge Arab metropolis amid nagging questions about its financial health. The Persian Gulf city-state had hoped the 2,717-foot (828-meter) Burj Khalifa would be a major tourist draw. Dubai has promoted itself by wowing visitors with over-the-top attractions such as the Burj, which juts like a silvery needle out of the desert and can be seen from miles around. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100208/ap_on_bi_ge/ml_dubai_tallest_building;_ylt=AkEBUVIiV4EwTNTboU4BE .ZvaA8F;_ylu=X3oDMTJ1cmNyMHF0BGFzc2V0A2FwLzIwMTAwMjA4L21sX2R1YmFpX3RhbGxlc3RfYnVpbGRpbmcEcG9zAzEEc2V jA3luX2FydGljbGVfc3VtbWFyeV9saXN0BHNsawN3b3JsZHN0YWxsZXM-

  7. Book launch: Weerane –The Mourning Tree: the autobiography of Mohamed Barud Ali The former president of Somalia: “Hargeysa is gone, Burao is gone and the national army is gone”. When: Saturday, 20 Feb. 2010 at 3pm Where: Oxford House, Derby Shire Street, E2 6GH Kayd Somali Arts and Culture in collaboration with redsea-online. com is proudly inviting you to the presentation of new book: 'Weerane: autobiography by Mohamed Barud Ali’. Join us to discuss this new autobiography with the author and also mark and commemorate with us, the student protest, 20 Feb 1981, erupted 28 years ago in Hargeysa demanding justice and the release of UFFA members. We expect you on Saturday, 20 Feb. 2010 at 3pm at Oxford House, Derby Shire Street, E2 6GH . Weer is a Somali word for a piece of cloth wrapped around one’s head to show that a grievance was been committed. At the same time, it is a sign of courage that you are willing to take revenge for the injustice and the pain inflicted on you. It is the name of the tree that Mahamed Barud Ali was born under into a pastoral nomadic Somali community in Somaliland . In this nomadic society, dignity is the single most important state of being. Weerane is a record of an injustice being done to a whole community and is being told in a dignified manner by Mahamed Barud Ali. This prison memoir will not only give first-hand information of the experience of the brutalities of Siyad Barre’s Somalia but also of the life of a nomad child who is brought to the city to live with his aunt because there was no work for him due to the fact that his father did not own any camels to be looked after. In the city while growing up, hunger was never far away. That motivated Mahamed to perform well at school which gave him the opportunity to go to the United Kingdom. After he earned his university degree, he went back to his home town Hargeysa where he met young professionals’ like him. They decided to volunteer for their community, what became to be known by the international community as Hargeysa Self-help group and locally as UFFO. For their noble acts, Mahamed and his colleagues were imprisoned and what followed were eight long lonely years, where the studying of insects was the main entertainment of the day. The reasons why they were freed, while at the same time the rest of their community had been destroyed, were as strange and surprising as the reasons why they were jailed in the first place were bizarre. There was no time in Mohamed’s life to get depressed or discouraged when he and his group were freed as the reconstruction of the country had to start immediately. Mahamed Barud Ali is civil right and humanity activist, Hero to some, the prisoner of conscience under the brutal regime of Somalia ; he lives in Hargeysa, with his wife and children and works on issues relating to human rights and civil liberties. 11. Chinese legal experts are proposing a ban on eating dogs and cats in a contentious move to end a culinary tradition dating back thousands of years. The recommendation will be submitted to higher authorities in April as part of a draft bill to tackle animal abuse. In ancient times, dog meat was considered a medicinal tonic. Today, it is commonly available throughout the country, but particularly in the north where dog stew is popular for its supposed warming qualities. In recent years, however, such traditions are increasingly criticised by an affluent, pet-loving, urban middle class. Online petitions against dog and cat consumption have attracted tens of thousands of signatures. Videos showing the maltreatment of farmed dogs have spurred protests at markets where the animals are bought and sold. But the drafters of the new proposal want far more drastic measures, which would oblige law enforcement authorities to close down thousands of dog restaurants and butchers which supply the meat. According to the draft, illegal sale or consumption of pets would incur a maximum penalty of 15 days in prison for individuals or a 500,000 yuan fine for businesses. Public security bureaus would be obliged to respond to hotline calls from the public about violations. "We are proposing that all dog and cat eating should be banned because it is causing many social problems," said Chang Jiwen, a law professor at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences who heads the drafting team. He said recent murders and thefts related to the dog meat trade showed that it had become a source of tension, while the economic impact of a ban would be small because an increasingly affluent population was less dependent on dog and cat meat. The proposal reflects changing public opinion and international input. Drafters at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences have been consulting for more than a year with Britain's Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the US-based International Fund for Animal Welfare. But the plan for a dog meat ban has stirred up fierce debate between animal welfare groups and defenders of traditional values. "I support this proposal. Whether you judge this as a question of food security or emotions, there is absolutely no necessity in China for people to eat dogs and cats," said Zeng Li, the founder of the Lucky Cats shelter in Beijing. "We need something more than moral pressure. Beijing's dog restaurants get their meat mainly from vagrant and stolen dogs. In the suburbs, dogs are hung and slaughtered in front of buyers." Online critics said it was hypocritical to protect only dogs and cats, and that the government should focus on human welfare before protecting animals. "This is absurd. Why only dogs and cats? How about pigs, cows and sheep," wrote a poster going by the name Mummy on the Xhinua news agency website. "I hope the experts went to see what laid-off workers and people in rural areas have to eat. They should pay more concern to problems that people really care about," said another contributor under the name Starfish. Even before the pet meat ban, the draft bill had already provoked controversy. Initial plans for a comprehensive animal welfare law had to be dropped in the face of criticism that human living conditions ought to be the priority at this stage in China's development. The focus has now been narrowed to prevention of animal abuse, which is defined as inflicting unnecessary pain and brutality. Even so, it is far from certain that the draft will be adopted by the government or the National People's Congress. http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2010/jan/26/dog-meat-china
  12. ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s beleaguered President Asif Ali Zardari, who is facing fresh challenges since the Supreme Court scrapped a graft amnesty that benefited him, has sacrificed hundreds of black goats to ward off the “evil eye” since he moved into the presidency in 2008. A black goat is slaughtered almost daily to ward off the “evil eye” and protect Zardari from “black magic”, the Dawn newspaper reported on Wednesday. The President also reportedly uses only camel and goat milk due to superstitions, the report said. However, presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar brushed aside suggestions that Zardari is a superstitious man. “It has been an old practice of Mr Zardari to offer ’sadqa’ (charity). He has been doing this for a long time,” Babar said. Zardari’s detractors, however, perceive his new-found religiosity as a sign of nervousness in the wake of the scrapping of the National Reconciliation Ordinance by the Supreme Court last month. The NRO was issued by former military ruler Pervez Musharraf to withdraw anti-corruption cases against Zardari and over 8,000 others. The Dawn reported that hundreds of black goats had been sacrificed since Zardari moved into the presidency in September 2008. Zardari’s trusted personal servant, Bai Khan, buys the goats from Saidpur, a village in the heart of Islamabad. The animal is touched by Zardari before it is sent to his private house in Sector F-8/2 in the city to be sacrificed. When Zardari moved into the presidency in September 2008, he was shown on state-run TV touching several black goats before they were led away by a member of his staff. There are also reports that when Zardari moved into the President’s House, a flock of black partridges were introduced there for their supposedly magical effects. However, the whole flock was electrocuted when a live wire fell on its cage. A camel, a cow and a few goats have also been kept on the grounds of the presidency to provide milk for Zardari. The President has also introduced the neem tree at his official residence for its antiseptic qualities. http://loatay.com/index.php/archives/5667
