^ Adigu maxaad dadka ugu dhaga hadleysa? Ever since your comeback as Kashanre, you’ve been making that little bit extra effort to confound what people write to what you wish they wrote, and come off as high-n-mighty. Give it a rest dude. Its not worth it (whatever u r hoping to achieve by doing so). Castro, yeah... gotta love them Sauds . Too bad some Somalis think of them as their gate-way to heaven.

Having said that ^, do u feel like a heavy burden has been lifted off ur shoulder? Does your life feel better? More meaningful?

There are so many arguments in the air, its difficult to make out what the topic of this discussion is. 1) An appreciation of Somalia-past. 2) Should Sharia impose the hijab? 3) Do Somali women choose to wear the jilbaab. 4) Is the jilbaab imported and foreign? 5) Were our forefathers ‘ignorant’ of the hijab? 6) Is it sacrilegious to say the jilbaab is unattractive and impractical? Now, time doesn’t permit one to cover each and every topic, so here are my concluding statements for this discussion: There is no disputing the hijab is obligatory on a Muslim woman. That I doubt, is even the topic of discussion. However, there is also no compulsion in religion and when man mandates God’s religion, there is bound to be leeway for error and abuse and dare I say – oppression. With regards to the hijab, to my knowledge… there is no agreed perfect one, just parameters on how to dress (like Kashafa said ). The concept of more clothes, more hijabed is preposterous. You’re either fulfilling the requirements of the hijab or you’re not. Then again, having read some of the requirements, its all subject to interpretation… some even go as far as saying the only thing that should remain uncovered is the left-eye (I kid you not!). Now, what’s a woman to do with so many people willing to interpret something that should essentially be simple in so many different ways? I, personally hate walking around and thinking I’m well hijabed but doubting maybe not. It’s a terrible feeling to have. One that is constantly fed by the array of descriptions of what the ‘good hijab’ should look like. The other day, I was browsing some Saudi sites and came across the following poster… appropriately titled ‘Choose for yourself ’ with two arrows pointing to what looks like a representation of hell and heaven. Both women look decent to me (and to the naked eye) but the poster puts a cross on the woman in the left and says she is ‘dolled up’. While a tick of approval is next to the other woman and under her it reads ‘ the right way to wear the hijab’. And in the middle are stipulations on what the hijab should do. This is where what you guys consider ‘mocking’ comes in. Am I supposed to sit back and say nothing on seeing that? (I laughed hard and then replied somewhere and asked where the rightly-hijabed woman puts her belongings? – bra?). I really don’t mean to mock… but my sense of humour gets me thru a lot of overwhelming absurdities. My point is simple. We cant go around promoting every awkward looking attire as a good hijab. If you look dowdy and unshapely and insist on sweeping the floor, you will be mocked (just like if you insist on wearing 7-inch platforms and plastering urself with make-up). One doesn’t have to look like a black walking mass of shadow to be ‘rightly hijabed’ and a woman’s ticket to heaven is not her dress. When I write on a topic of this sort, I don’t have a hidden agenda nor am I gaalo-hearted. Walaahi the last thing I would want to do is isolate masaakiinta jilbaabka xidha. I already think they have it tough. However, as muslims.. we need internal criticism to maintain some level of moderation in views… otherwise the most extreme point of view gets aired and taken to be standard. When I posted the pic of the two school photos – I genuinely could understand why people thought the nation went not just through overhaul but a sort of arabization… because it did. It is better or worse? A bit of both…atleast where the hijab is concerned but dare I say its not all dandy. The school girls definitely don’t have a choice in their school uniform and the imposed jilbaab is unpractical…. And should I be saying this? I think definitely. Lastly, the jilbaab is not the only triangular thing that Somalis wear, but also the overcoat dress that Pakistanis wear is referred to as jilbaab (below pic). Will the real jilbaab please stand out?

^ Who are you kidding? The boy is you.

Kashanre, I don’t understand how ur point relates to mine. U seem a little too eager to incriminate me tho. Not nice. Afro, its whatever floats your boat. I was just stating my preference. Ducaqabe, if only I had an artistic hand and an eye for colour..... Kashafa expressing one’s preference or deeming a type of hijab (i.e. jilbaab) as unattractive isn’t tantamount to ‘mocking the diin’ or for that matter even mocking the hijab as a decree from Allah. I suggest u not only go and re-read the article u pointed me to (and notice its reference to insultsdenouncement and hypocrisy) but also note the book the whole article was taken from – [1] From the TROID publication: Things that Nullify One's Islam by Shaykh al-Islam Muhammad ibn 'Abdil-Wahhaab, explained by Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan . I wouldn’t disrespect any sheikh but I’ll say that alot of scholars do not agree with all his interpretations. Since we're all in Hijab-appreciation mode t'night, how do you wear yours ? Mostly like below. I hope its not too revealing for your taste. .

Originally posted by Dhubad: As opposed to: Yeah, I understand where the objection comes from. The jilbaab is rather unattractive and unpractical and new. Why couldnt somalis figure out a pretty way to wear the hijab? Like: or or or even the most common: or even stick to the traditional somali garbasaar. Somalis with their exceptionally good comprehension skills seem to have taken the ‘do not show ur form’ too literally, to the point they resemble penguins. Infact, whenever I see one passing me by… I’ve the urge to take out a shimbire-laaye and shoot them down!

North, I don’t understand where your disdain is coming from. Large parts of the population (workers) in Dubai are Christians – mainly Asians too… not all Americans/Brits as you alluded to. So why not? I know it’s a Muslim country but does that mean minority celebrations should be banned and people deprived of their holiday celebrations? – like in the KSA where the ‘Muttawa’ see to it that not a single piece of decoration is even found in the shops (its perfectly awright the rest of the year!).. let alone a public recognition of the holiday.

Can we change this section into Matrimonial System?

Guys... the 3rd pic was posted by Geel_Jire. The only people who can post pics for the contest are the judges. It was stated clearly in the initial post. I'm not sure if I should leave it at this warning or have the mods delete the pic. Either way, I apologise to those who were confused and submitted a caption.

^ Thanks Khaalid. Less than 500 posts since '02..thats shameful! U should post more.

Fulla, The Arab Barbie A stunning lady has invaded toy stores around the Arab world, she is the Arab Barbie, Fulla! Barbie has blue eyes, blond hair and a killer body! Fulla has black eyes, brown hair less make-up and a killer body! The other difference is that Fulla wears a head cover and a 3abaiah when leaving the house, and while being in the privacy of her own home wears stunning tight clothes and beautiful dresses that compliment her figure! The basic doll comes in her outdoor fashion; the black head scarf and long black 3abaiah, or robe. Underneath, Fulla wears lace undies, a straight skirt with modest side split, and a pink and white top with three-quarter-length sleeves. Pink shoes and a pink shoulder bag complete the ensemble. Cool Ha ! Would you buy Barbie, or Fulla if you had to choose? Source

^ Its not your place to impose your understanding of Islam on other sects. And to mock and redicule them is just plain ol' wrong.
-
^ LoL. Only one caption jumped to mind when I saw that pic. Hear hear... the honourable Alle-Ubaahne is here to speak.

I dont find it funny...rather gross. The man was obviously moved by passion for his religion...and to put a gay song on top and post it on a muslim forum is nothing short of disgusting.

‘ello Nomads, It’s the holiday season and what better way to enjoy than play a game? I’m hereby presenting you SOL’s first competition. And of course, there is a prize. The winner after each week will get a Samsung MP3 Player. Ok. There is no prize. I cant afford it, I’m a poor student. But maybe in the future. As in the title, the game is called ‘Caption Challenge’. Those of you who buy Maxim magazine for the 'articles' (yeah right) will know this game from the back page. Every week on a Monday, We (the judges) will put up a picture and you have to try and come up with the snazziest caption for it. At the end of the week, the judges will decide who came up with the winner caption. Just to clarify...the FUNNIEST caption wins.... and only the first caption will be taken and any subsequent entries will be ignored. This competition will run for 6 weeks. A running total will be kept to ensure the ruling king/queen of wit is duly recognized. 1st place = 5 points 2nd place = 3 points 3rd place = 1 point The rules are simple: 1) One caption per person per picture 2) The decision of the judges is final The judges: Curling Waterfall Legend of Zu Undergdog We have asked LOZ to moderate this topic so people don’t post their own pics or flood the topic. So please lets keep it smooth. This week’s picture is below. Lets see that world famous wit ….

LOOKING FOR HELP ( IN MAJOR DECISION )

I was gonna vote for NG but that would be predictable, wouldnt it? So my person of the year goes to some1 under recognized on this site. Some1 who posts interesting and informative topics and some1 with a demeanor as cool as a cucumber. I vote for Viking. [E], I get two votes. My second vote is for Ducaqabe. He is so soft written, in uu timaha kuu salaaxaya ayaad mooda when you read his replies. Of course..I dont expect him to stay this way...after all, we all started out sweet.

Glad to hear every1 has had a good year. Xiin, Canada is good choice but I recommend Minnie. I hear the girl’s there have a combination of good features and the pure African complexion that defy the norms along with the sweetness. (as said by Xoogsade). Ducaqabe, LoL. Thanks. Arent you eager to have us join you? . Why do I get the feeling its not because you want me to be just as happy? Huh?. I’m not making plans for 06 this year. I’m going to live each day as it comes. Right.

I’m glad to know you’ve all had a wonderful and eventful year…specially North (talk about jam-packed!). Pharax, no worries…we can meet this year (although I get the feeling I’m not the desired Xalimo ) Xiin, thanks. I’m sure there was more to your year than an ‘ok’. Come on..share with us. I know you married folk don’t consider a year eventful if you haven’t had a new baby or a new wife Stoic, how could you forget the Kashmir Quake? It personally touched me more as most of my friends are Pakistani. It was the first time that I actually bothered to donate from my pocket too (I usually motivate the big guy). Yonis, one of your highlights was me? Wow. Wonders never cease on SOL For me: Key moments/highlights: Live8, Birth of my niece (who I had the opportunity to name - Amani. Pretty name, I know) Sis joining Uni. Aunt’s wedding. Dad’s visit. I didn’t graduate (I’A next year) but I did complete a 1-year industrial placement in a reputable company, which should look good on my CV, I suppose, since I’m three times as discriminated against (Sheh’s topic about my bleak future). Its hard to blv I could actually hack 9-5 job. Low points: Death of my grandfather. I’ve wanted to visit Borama to see him for the past 5yrs. Now that he is gone…I don’t see any reason to visit Borama or Somaliland or Somalia for that matter. In terms of adventure, 2005 was on the blah side of things. I’m not even sure I left London the whole year. Overall… Alxamdulilah is due.
