Somalia: Explosion in Puntland capital kills 1
General Duke replied to Che -Guevara's topic in Politics
Inalilah wa ina illahi Rajacuun. May Allah give peace to the dead and heal the injured. This incident thus far seems like an accident. Bombs wont change anything and the new admin needs a little time to get the security situation in order. We had worse attacks before and Puntland security is improving. -
Being new to American literature I am pleased to find this Cormac McCarthy a real gem thus far. Hayam, thanks for the heads up will get back to you on A Fine Balance. Lily “Mary of Magdala,” wow I love historical based storylines , give us the author and a brief summary if you can. This is the same Mary who's either a Prostitute, or the closest saint and the mother of the "bloodline" in the Dan Brown novels? C&H: Dan Brown is ok, but I found the Da Vinci Code a bit boring and quite predictable.

TFG's Cabdi-Qaybdiid responsible for Abdul-Qaadir Cali's bombing
General Duke replied to Kashafa's topic in Politics
Suffice it for us at this stage to know that by now this group of Kharijites – known as the “Muhakkima had already resolved upon the following principles: a) The declaration of Kufr (unbelief) on Sayyidna Ali, Muawiyyah, and all those who had participated in and agreed to the process of arbitration b) Takfir (charging with unbelief) of all those who disagreed with them on any theological issues c) The right to kill any of the above. In this context the response of Sayyidna Ali to their view that the “prerogative of command belongs to Allah alone” by saying that it was “a word of truth with a devious end” becomes quite apparent. It was evident to Sayyidna Ali that theirs was a political agenda - an agenda that was inspired by an ill-conceived sense of political isolationism owing to their Bedouin status. The spirit of Islam – as yet – had not served to de-tribalise them. Strength, to them, resided in aggression and belligerence; and not in the deeper recesses of the spirit and soul – the wellsprings of genuine faith (Iman). -

Kashafa; Adeer the Kharajites were not a homogenous group nor specific to one time, they were an ideological movement like many sects through the ages. They were old and central players to the first Fitna and had roles in the second. Theirs was a total arrogant belief in their own position. Extremists without doubt. I disagree when you say they had rudimentary beliefs in the deen, how can one not know the deen where in the time and breathed the same air as the Prophet and the Sahaba? Even the Hadith you quoted clearly states that they "will come a people who will recite the Qur’an continuously and beautifully but it will not go past their throats." Thus they knew the Quran, even prayd fervently, the issue here was their pride, their arrogance that made this man speak out and try to correct the holly prophet [PBUH] or their anger and rebelion against the rightly chosen Caliph when he made truce with Muawiya and the rebels. Thus they broke rank and left the fold. If we look at the present times, we have people who dont listen to their parents, their elders and their community, because they arrogantly think they know the faith and the rest do not. How can we correct them 1400 years after the fact, when Sayid Ali could not correct them two decades after the holly prophets passing? The Shia-Sunni schism. The rebellion against the third Caliph and the discord of the Umma the vacume it created was filled by the likes of the Kharajites and others. The Kharajites initially were the most successful, because by all accounts they were focused and single minded. Sayid Ali defeated many and tried to keep them out of the main cities but to no avail they succeeded in penetrating the population. Their conviction that Ummayid dynasty were usurpers the remaining party of Ali & his son Hussain who was murdered in Karbala were fused with these groups and thus sprung up the Shia branch and its total hostility to the Sunni grouping who they view followed those who denied the Ahlu Bait from ruling the Muslim Ummah. Now like I said earlier Kharajites were not a single group and they varied, and most did not acknowledge the term itself. Now through the ages we had many strange sects and groups who each believed they were the rightly guided, once the whole Islamic world was dominated by Ismaeli Shiates better known as the Fatimids, this empire started in Mahdia Tunisisa and they even founded the city of Cairo [now the capital of the Arab world] and even the university of Al Azhar some believe named after Fatima Zahra. We even had groups like the famous Hashashin's who the west derived the name Assassin's These were crack head's of their time, they got high on weed and went out on suicide religious missions, they brought fear to the powerful Abbasid dynasty and killed many a prince. Thus in the modern day, we have people who use fear and not reason. Who use the Quran to further naked agenda's, who ignore some of the rulings and behaviours of the holly prophet and amplify others. Now know the Kharajites also viewed themselves as pious Muslim's and thought they too were following the example of the holly prophet and the Quran. -

HIP-HOP Alim, while anyone can do a little search online and find out historical info on who this ancient group were. I will simplify it for you, the Khawarij or Kharajites were an extreme sect who went astray at the time of the first FITNA at the end of the third Caliph reign and throughout the reign of the final Caliph Sayid Ali ibn Abu Talib. They continued for centuries and played a key role in the schism which led to the Sunni & Shia division within the Islamic world. They have a certain characteristics, which are uncannily similar to our modern day jihadi’s. 1. They were self righteous, single minded and knew everything. 2. They were always right, everyone else was wrong 3. Extreme zealots they put to death anyone who disagreed with them 4. The world was them and the rest and other Muslim’s were kafir’s in their eyes. 5. They celebrated the deaths of the Muslims and enjoyed the cult of death 6. They were democratic and seeked support from within the poor. 7. They brought havoc, division and pain and used their perverted interpretation of the Holly Quran as a pretext to wage their wars The early Kharajite leaders knew the religion much more deeply and gained their knowledge from first hand primary sources, more than any living Muslim or previous generations could dream of, they needed no Ulema, or Shiekh some even met the prophet [pbuh] and lived in the age of Abu Bakar, Omar, Othman and Ali. Yet they were wrong and went a stray. What can a confused young lad, full of ego cowardice and bravado who celebrates death of fellow Muslims, who calls fellow Muslim’s by heretical names bring to the table? -

No Country for Old Men by Cormac MacCarthy This is my second new book.I loved the Cohen brothers Oscar winning movie, but I was told the book is even better. No Country for Old Men is a 2005 novel by American author Cormac McCarthy . Set along the United States–Mexico border in 1980, the story concerns an illicit drug deal gone wrong in a remote desert location. The title comes from the poem "Sailing to Byzantium" by William Butler Yeats.[1] In 2007 a critically acclaimed film adaptation was released, winning four Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Lily the book is fiction set in Mumbai India in the middle of the 70s..I will give a summary when I complete it, I have yet to begin reading it. A Fine Balance is the third book by Rohinton Mistry. Set in Mumbai, India between 1975 and 1977 during the turmoil of The Emergency, a period of expanded government power and crackdowns on civil liberties, this book is about four characters from varied backgrounds—Dina Dalal, Ishvar Darji, his nephew Omprakash and the young lad Maneck—who come together and develop a bond. First published by McClelland and Stewart in 1995, it won the Giller Prize. In 2001 it was selected for Oprah's Book Club. It was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1996. It was one of the selected books in the 2002 edition of Canada Reads, championed by actor Megan Follows.

Guurti Move Jeopardizes Return To Democracy In Somaliland 26 March 2009 | News Some members of the unelected House of Elders, the Guurti, are proposing yet another extension for the unelected president of Somaliland. The group whose number is fewer than a third of the 82-member body, has tabled a bill to extend Riyale’s presidency by another six months. If the chamber approves the bill, it will give Riyale grounds to justify his stay in power without being elected. Given the significant opposition that he currently faces in the Guurti, the prospect of such a bill passing is low. However, the positions of the Guurti members are unpredictable. Members who are currently opposing the bill may suddenly switch sides without prior indication. President Riyale run for office in 2003 winning a five-year term by a razor-thin margin of just 80 votes. In April 2008, just weeks before the long awaited election was due to be held, the Guurti passed a bill that extended Riyale’s presidency for 1 year ending on April 6th of this year. Constitutional scholars agree that the current proposed bill, which is similar to the previous one, has no legal bases. Majority of the constitutional experts also side with the opposition parties’ assertion that unilateral extensions of the president’s term by the Guurti is unconstitutional. Of the three democratic elections that took place in Somaliland within the last six years, only the members of the Parliament still have time remaining to serve. The president, his vice-president, the Guurti and the local councilors are all holding public offices despite their unelected status. The opposition parties cite this as the major factor stalling any progress on the democratic front as these individuals still continue to make day-to-day decisions that shape the future of the country. -

Fadhigii Golaha Guurtida Iyo Dareeno Xasaasi Ah Oo Ka Dhashay Ciidamo Xoogan Oo La Soo Dhoobay Xarunta Golaha Baarlamaanka March 25th, 2009 Hargaysa (Somaliland.org)- Fadhigii golaha guurtid Somaliland ee maanta ayaa loo qaybiyay mudanayaasha qoraalkii komishanku ay muddeeyeen waqtiga doorashada Madaxtooyada ee ay uga guureen 29-ka March, kaas oo ah 31-ka bisha May ee sannadkan 2009. Golaha Guurtida oo fadhigii saaka ay ka muuqatay xasaasiyad xoog leh ayaa markii mudanayaasha loo qaybiyay qoraalada waxa uu guddoomiyaha goluhu ku wargeliyay in sida xeer hoosaadkoodu dhigayo ay soo akhriyaan muddo 24 saacadood ah, kadibna maalinta sabtida ah la bilaabo dooda qoraalka Komishanka iyo Madaxwayne Riyaale uu soo saaray oo golaha guurtida uu ugu sheegay in maadaamada mudada komishanku soo saaray ay ka dambayso muddada xilka Madaxwaynaha oo ah 06 April 2009, in ay u kordhiyaan oo waafajiyaan muddada Komishanku cayimay. Qoraaladan loo qaybiyay maanta mudanayaasha golaha guurtida ayaa xubnaha goluhu ku kala aragti duwanyihiin, iyada oo xildhibaanada golaha intooda badani ay qabaan in qodobka muddo kordhinta u fasaxaya golaha guurtida aanu wakhtigan fursad u siinayn in goluhu ay kordhiyaan, maadaama dalka aanay dagaalo ka jirin oo ah sababta kaliya ee golaha guurtida u fasaxaya muddo kordhin, sidaa saraadeed ay xildhibaanadu is hortaagaan muddo kordhinta Madaxwayne Riyaale, si qaranku u yeesho wada tashi guud oo doorashada lagu gaadho, halka ay xildhibaanada kale ay ku doodayaan goluhu horeba wuu u kordhiyee iminkana ha la kordhiyo. Maalinta sabtida ah ayaa la filayaa in goluhu bilaabi dooni dooda arrintan, kadibna mudanayaasha goluhu ay u qaadaan cod ku ansaxaya hal dheeri in mudada loo kordhiyo Madaxwayne Riyaale iyo in ay is hortaagaan. Dhinaca kale guddoomiyaha Golaha Guurtidu waxa uu eedayn xoogleh u jeediyay ciddii soo dirtay Ciidamo xoog leh oo saaka la soo hordhoobay Xarunta Golaha Baarlamanka, kuwaasi oo is hortaagay in Saxaafadda iyo dadkii doonayay inay fadhigaas Guurtida dhagaystaan. Hase ahaatee, Guddoomiyaha Golaha Guurtida ayaa markii dambe Ciidamadaasi dibada ugu soo baxay oo amar ku siiyay inay ka baxaan gudaha Dayrka Baarlamaanka. Sidoo kale Guddoomiyaha Golaha Wakiilada Cabdiraxmaan Maxamed Cabdillaahi (Cirro), ayaa isaguna cambaareeyay Ciidamada la soo dhoobay Baarlamaanka, isaga oo sheegay inaan loo baahnayn. Ciidamadan laga soo buux-dhaafiyay Xarunta Baarlamaanka ayaa la sheegay in amarka lagu keenay halkaasi uu bixiyay Xoghayahaa guud ee Guurtida Cabdillaaahi Ibraahin Habane (Cabdillaahi-dheere) , kaasoo isagu ka Ciidamada ka dalbaday Madaxda sare ee Booliska. Xoghayahan oo muddooyinkii dambe lahaa awood ka badan tiisa, ayaa haatan u muuqda mid culays lagu saaray inuu ku ekaado kaliya shaqada Xoghaynimo ee uu Golaha u hayo. Somalia: Somaliland MPs debate Riyale's term-extension 26 Mar 26, 2009 - 10:46:29 AM HARGEISA, Somalia Mar 26 (Garowe Online) - The upper house of parliament in Somalia's breakaway republic of Somaliland has opened up debate on President Dahir Riyale's request for a two-month term extension to rule the region until the May 31 presidential election, Radio Garowe reports. Wednesday's extraordinary session of the House of Guurti was attended by 62 MPs, who read a motion presented by the Riyale administration and the Somaliland election commission. "The only constitutional authority that can extend the President's term is the House of Guurti so I urge you lawmakers to genuinely consider the constitution," said Mr. Saleban "Gal" Mohamud, the Guurti chairman. Dahir Riyale, Somaliland leader He expressed anger with the presence of additional police units, who closed-off streets near the Somaliland parliament and prevented journalists and civilians from entering the parliament building. Mr. Saleban Gal eventually ordered the police to leave the parliament compound and remain outside the building, as MPs inside debated the most politically sensitive motion the region has seen since unilaterally declaring independence from Somalia in 1991. According to parliament sources, Guurti MPs were deeply divided over the term-extension motion, with some lawmakers supporting the term-extension for Riyale's government to administer Somaliland until May 31. But other MPs opposed the move, warning against a possible confrontation between government and opposition supporters. The debate is scheduled to continue on Saturday, parliament officials said. President Riyale has previously refused to step down on April 6, when a term extension his government received from the House of Guurti in 2008 expires. He has vowed that he will step down "only to an elected president," clearly rejecting opposition leader Ahmed Silanyo's demand that the House of Guurti appoint a caretaker government to rule Somaliland until the May 31 presidential election. The election delay has caused a political uproar in Somaliland, with some reports saying the opposition is preparing for mass protests across Somaliland on March 29, when the election was supposed to be held. Somaliland, located in northwest Somalia, has not been recognized internationally but the separatist republic runs its own affairs. Western powers have donated some US$16 million to the voter-registration process, which has yet to be completed. Source: Garowe Online

The Question of Somali Unity: Does it Matter Anymore?
General Duke replied to Jacaylbaro's topic in Politics
JB: Adeer you are entertaining yourself. Djibouti is a separate entity due to the Afar tribe and their influence and the fact that French occupation ended long after the Somali states creation. Historical issues such as the dictatorship aside one can say even Djibouti a small region has become the centre for Somali’s, it’s a Somali base and works to keep unity together, who knows what tomorrow will bring. Now as for Somaliland state and region, its done well like its North eastern kin and the influx of people from the South [Many teachers, engineers and political leaders moved north after the war] has contributed greatly to its stability and peace. 1991 is not two centuries ago, maybe you wanted to be dramatic but differentiate between a decade and a century lad. Your arguments are weak, Somaliland has done well but its barely surviving a united Somalia at peace with itself and its neighbors will allow the Somali to start thriving. In a globalizing world unity is the only thing that can keep up from the storm. There were once nations like the Cherokee and the Apache they had bigger and better lands than the Somali’s, they do not exist today only cars and casino’s are left as a reminder of their past. Dont be weak lad. -

No People still trade, work, marry and intemingle with each otehr regardless of titels. You have a secessionist enclave thats not recognised and is still part of the country. You have a federal state that is still part of the country. You have "religious" run areas. yet are still part of the country. Its all about locals admins and with time things will change. We are too small a people and insignificant without unity. -

I have to agree with Meiji, Hargaysa is no different than any other Somalia area. One can argue it is more successful but it is still part of the Somali nation. As for unity, we know from history how the NW was fervent nationalists in the 1960s, now because of the trauma of the dictatorship and the civil war years things have changed. Who is to say this is the only reality? With time things will change again and the people will be more united regardless of region or clan. As fpr Mogadishu society, it exists and Meiji might be confusing things but I dont think it should be undermined in anyway.
