The mother of a toddler who died of meningitis began weeping uncontrollably Tuesday after a jury found her and her husband guilty of failing to provide their ill son with the necessaries of life.
David and Collet Stephan were charged after 19-month-old Ezekiel died in March 2012.
The couple testified at their trial in Lethbridge that they believed their son had croup or flu, so they treated him for 2 1/2 weeks with remedies that included smoothies with hot peppers, garlic, onions and horseradish.
He eventually stopped breathing and died after being rushed to hospital.
The defence argued the couple were loving, responsible parents who simply didn’t realize how sick the little boy was.
The Crown said the Stephans didn’t do enough to ensure Ezekiel received the medical help he needed. The prosecution noted that the Stephans had been warned by a friend who was a registered nurse that the boy probably had meningitis.
The maximum penalty for failing to provide the necessaries of life is five years in prison.
The case has drawn international attention, due in part because of the societal divide between those who do and don’t believe in the natural medicine movement.
Court documents entered at the trial said just days before Ezekiel was rushed to hospital his family was giving him fluids through an eyedropper because he wouldn’t eat or drink.
The jury also heard that Collet Stephan researched treatments for viral meningitis online and picked up an echinacea mixture from a naturopath in Lethbridge.
Court was told Ezekiel was too stiff to sit in his car seat and had to lie on a mattress on the way to a naturopath’s office the day before he stopped breathing.

Clinton could win, but unless she wins the congress, it will be four years of gridlock. Americans are reduced just like a debating society. They could not agree on anything. America is taking the image of the useless 24 hour cable news debate that does not allow the conclusion of any thing.
In China less than 10 men will decide the issue and the next day it will be implemented.
Liberals are enlighten and sensible, but they can not relate with normal people. Rather than jobs, and local communities, they concentrate things like global warming and gender issues.
Personally , I am not worried about Trump or his ideas. Let him confront China and others. Soon he will realize how the world has changed long time ago.

One thing is for sure , the two party system could disappear or there could be some re alignment of party platforms. While the democrats seem to be liberal in their immigration approach ,and moderate in their foreign policy , they do not have the ability or the will power to do any meaningful changes. They play always defensive just like Obama. If you are liberal you must show your true colors and people will reward you for your values of tolerance and inclusiveness, not with words, but with legislative actions just like the Canadian prime minister Trudeau.
In Minneapolis the United State Attorney appointed by Obama himself uses entrapments to convict Somalis who might have made innocent pronouncements in the internet or just found guilty by association. . There is no meaningful help from the so called city and state wide leaders to help the youth or the community. If you are voting for these people, they must show interest in your issues.
The democrats with their trade liberalization, have exported American manufacturing jobs to China and Mexico which left many working class workers out of the job market. The problem is neither Trump nor Hillary could bring those jobs back . Automation and new technology will eliminate most of those low skill jobs, Besides, if the I phone is manufactured in North America , no one can afford to buy it and all those cheap products at the Walmart .

Last week a well informed source from Calgary , Alberta told me about an impasse between President Hassan Sheekh Mohamud and the minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Mr. Guuleed Xuseen C/qadir Qasim. Any Professional journalists usually checks the veracity of the resources and then immediately publishes the scoop they have uncovered. I knew the story was true , but since I am not a journalist , I did not want to embrace or undermine the poor minister who was fighting to do the right thing. I swear to God he even told me that the General Gabre sponsored minister who suppose to be taking over his position Mr. Mursal, the new minister of telecommunication.
According to him, the Japanese government has acquired the rights to install telephone and internet throughout Somalia . It is not the first time Japan has built telephone infrastructure in Somalia, especially in Mogadishu. In the late eighties modern pay phones and phone lines were started by that government in a European financed project. After the collapse of the state most of fiber optics and copper made transmitting lines were uprooted and sold off to gulf sates by the warlords and other connected anarchists.
The Japanese deal to build modern, state of the art underground telephone lines, and other communication infrastructure is welcomed by most Somalis . It is a welcome news to attract a first world technologically advanced nation of Japan to build any thing . even with the lack of huge investment, Somali telephone rates are one of the cheapest around the world.
The crest of the matter is the way this deal is awarded and negotiated. Former broadcasting minister Mr. C/laahi Ciilmooge who is from Jubba region headed the contract negotiating team. To show the importance of the deal and quicken the process , he even took President Hassan to Japan for the last stages of the process. Unfortunately , the constant shuffling of the Prime minister and ministers eliminated Mr. Ciilmooge to sign the final deal. To fill that position, a young professional from the diaspora , who also hails from Jubba region , became the new minister of the enhanced ministry of Posts and Telecommunications. The young minister was the son of former Somali minister Huseen C/qadir Qasim. Having spent the last twenty some years in a productive and clean life, he is reported to be among the decent Somalis who were trying to contribute for the restoration of Somalia.
In order to a have complete monopoly of Somali telecommunications industry the Japanese were asked to pay a kick pack worth $58 million dollars. According to the minister, the Japanese added these illegal $ 58 million bribe to the cost of their services which multiplies the basic telephone services of the country. The minister objected this inflated price tag. According to the minister himself, President Hassan asked him to sign the deal , take his share or be fired from the position. The President was furious that a young man who joined the government lately will undermine a huge deal which will award him and his cronies millions. He told him , " Adeer qaybtaada qaado oo saxiix , hawshani muddo ayey soo socotee, haddii aad diidana saxiixa wareeji". Well , he refused and within days his replacement was arranged. They were just waiting before the weak lame duck prime minister comes from the foreign trip.

This so called " Islaax, Akhwaan , Damujadiid or whatever name you call them, are one of the most corrupt punch in the Somali corruption history. With leas than four years, they amassed millions of kick backs and bribes while soldiers are without pay. Before we replace them , they might even sell the whole country.

Maxamed . please welcome to SOL. As Coofle said, please try to tackle one topic at the time by comparing different solutions. There are huge debates among doctors on the effectiveness of Naturopathy. Personally I could not say much about these issues since I do not have any knowledge of medicine or health related topics.
First, I am one of those who avoid taking any medicine other than Tylenol for headache , yet God forbid , if illness befalls on me the first step will be to get a relieve of the pain and find cure. usually most people do not seek cures before the illness. Last year a dear and close friend of mine was diagnosed with cancerous tumor in the forehead. In order to reduce the constant growth of the tumor, chemotherapy was used. Loss of hair or impotency was the last resort when he was fighting for his life.
Second, if you would like to offer the badly needed health tips , they should be affordable or convenient for most of the people. Again since I am not literate of these issues , I will live this to our steamed sage Coofle-- whom we missed from these pages--- to offer the critical responces on this issue.

The largest number of the youth risking their lives in the dangerous oceans are from Somaliland. Most of these are probably graduates.
No one can sustain 70-80% unemployment. Hargeisa is filled with three story buildings for useless ministries paid by NGO's. You do not need forty ministries to manage a mere $100 million budget.
There are no jobs and there will not be jobs or any hope to stay their. No incentives to create new industries or youth attracting initiatives. Imagine a budget with no capital projects to build infrastructure. Even villages and towns have yearly capital projects to enhance service and create local jobs.
All you see is " wasaarada xoolaha iyo ta biyaha oo dabaq dhistay". wasaarada biyaha inta ay dabaq u dhisayaan miyey ceel biyood qodaan. The whole system is based in 1970 socialist governing model. I saw few weeks ago during the drought that , " The president donated ambulance van to Lughaya town", in the new. These towns should be collecting their taxes and caring for their people. The worst thing is these ambulances have been also donated by NGO's.
If you can not resolve the youth unemployment or create any hope , then you should tell people that this experiment is failed, and a new economic model and strategy must be created. Even in war torn south Somalia , the unemployment is lower than Somaliland. Somali union and economic integration should be the only way to lift the economy from the stagnation.
The youth can not wait the false hopes of the old guard. They must find their future within the Somali territories rather than die in the high seas. This Somaliland Project can not be sustained any longer. How many more have to die. Syrians fleeing war and Eritreans leaving a despot are risking their lives, but also Somalis from Burco, Borama and Hargeisa are dying in the high sees to get away from the hopeless future Somaliland.
Does anyone from Hargeisa has the answer for this tragedy?, I don't think so.

2- Although the western life style and the climate put all of us constantly either at work or home, we must Try to share our lives with other people and do not be with each others shadow day and night. Two of my two co-workers wo are married , spent most of their time together. They take coffee and lunch breaks together while passing by each other all day at the same workplace. Then they have to finish work and drive home together . few weeks ago while chatting about life and marriage, he complained about work and he asked me my opinion. I told him to find another job for the sake of his marriage.
3- Why not create the spark yourself. Women have always certain mystery in them. Little tension would be a plus sometimes.
Even if there were doubts before the marriage, after the consumption , a sense of unity, mercy and love starts as the Quraan says., " "And among His Signs is that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may dwell in tranquility with them, and He put love and mercy between your hearts. The again Holac could be correct. While it is always important to marry someone you like, A husband has a thousand opportunity to fix every issue of character, love and compatibility. We all have certain weaknesses , but some weaknesses will not be overlooked by most women. Many Somali women expect the man to be Alpha male with strong character. Being friend to you before marriage mean nothing. He already shown you his gentle side while being your friend, now must show his toughness. he maybe your friend or husband , but you are measuring him every day , month and year. who knows , you may even like a ruthless bad boy than a weak but gentleman guy.

SubhanAllah, if there is any story of human right and suffering , this is poster one. For many years I heard about Sinai Arab Bedouin of Egypt harvesting the kidneys from Eritreans , Sudanese and some Somalis.
This pictures are horrifying. I hope those in the west who are fighting for dolphins and other species would lend hand to expose this cruel trade.
In India and other places people pay many for kidneys . It shows how cruel these Arabs are.

The European economy is in stagnation . The new economic stimulus term is called debt financing. Billions are poured to lift the economy with almost zero interest rates. No one knows how long this debt financing economy will last.
In order to sell her industrial and technological products, Germany is the one who encouraged the wide opening of Euro zone. How can the poor Greeks and rich Germans would be members of the same club. It is like two guys, one earning $100,000, and the other earning $25,000. They both go together and party at the same country club. The poor guy already spent his twenty five while the rich guy still have money to spend. Europe need more activity, more people, especially new immigrants to replace it's aging population to spur economic growth. If they open their gates wide, their character will change dramatically, if they keep the status qua , they will keep stagnating for ever.
Chinese debt in Africa is huge. The Chinese communists know that Africans will never pay their debts, so they already planned ahead. In Angola, Sudan and Zambia, they getting paid with row material. They did build 2000 km rail way for ANGOLA and they got paid in millions of barrels of oil, same with Sudan and others.

Hassan Sheekh spent four years organizing Galmudug and South West regions. He could not even finish Hiiraan and others. Al-Shabaab is stronger than 2014, and politically we are back to square one , where we started 2012.

This week an extraordinary meeting between the Gedo (Kacaan) community and the government of Kenya took place. Almost everyone that mattered attended the meeting. The meeting was arranged by the former prime minister Saacid who is based in Kenya since 1991, after the collapse of the Somali state. He established some businesses connected with no governmental organizations. He was aided by another former prime minister C/weli Sheekh Ahmed.
According to those who followed this meeting and others held in Nairobi for the last few weeks, Kenya got exactly what it has demanded. In the middle of January , 2016, Al-Shabaab extremists overrun a Kenyan forward military base in the small town of Ceel Cade, Gedo, Somalia. While it is hard to know the exact number of the Kenyan Casualty, unofficial figures were between 100 and 200 soldiers. Both the Kenyan government and the public could not stomach the largest military casualty suffered by Kenya in it's history.
Kenyatta Junior openly accused the Gedo community by aiding Al-Shabaab. Since they can not find a sitting duck Al-Shabaab or a village to capture from them, they decided to go after the soft targets, in this case the unarmed civilian population of Gedo. They started indiscriminate bombing of the border communities and villages. Collateral damages may happen where militants are targeted, but this indiscriminate killings of the local people by Kenya was deliberate and calculated. There were no organized local media or others brave enough to bring this crimes to the Somali public and the international audience, yet some how certain Somalis were able to document the atrocities committed by Kenya. Aided by international human right NGO's , they collected enough evidence to incriminate the Kenyan government or at least show their disregard of civilian population. Late last month, this accusation got some traction that they could attract the attention of the world.
In the background of all this is the sitting president of Kenya and his deputy were already investigated and accused of inciting genocide by the United Nations as early as last year. Another publicity and accusations with hard evidence will put the Kenyan leader in precarious situation. Now the local businessman Saacid and C/weli were hired or I should say contracted out by Kenya to made certain arrangements with the Community. They did not disappoint. They brought the supreme Ugaas of the Gedo community, elders, religious leaders, businessmen and politicians.
According to Nairobi based people, Kenya has got more than it bargained for. Here is the break down.
1- The Gedo leaders fully agreed and supported the wall Kenya is building between Kenya and the provisional border of 1963.
2-Those activists who were organizing and highlighting the Gedo genocide against the Kenyan government agreed to drop their cases and financial compensation were promised for their time spent in the issue.
3- 1200 Gedo militia will be trained by the Kenyan government inside Kenya. Those militia will be paid and controlled by that government and will be fighting Al-Shabaab along side the Kenyan military.
4- C/weli Sheekh Ahmed, the former prime minister, will be aided by Kenya in the next Somali presidential election.
5-The Gedo militia controlled by Barre Hiiraale and others will be given permanent bases in Kismayo with direct help from the Kenyan government.
6- Gedo politicians agreed to support the presence of Kenyan military in Somalia for the next few years.
7- The Gedo administration should be immediately under the direct control of the Jubba administration.

In other words , the Gedo community became a client clan of Kenya. Justifying their warm relations with Kenya, those who attended the meeting, publicly explained their motivations. They rightly pointed the fingers to the federal government ,especially the President who mourned with the Kenyan soldiers during Ceel Cade killings, while ignoring the death of the Gedo civilians. They felt abandoned by the Somali government , so they took care of their clan business as every Somali would do. Certainly they are not the first Somali clan to have a meeting with a foreign government, but it could be the largest of it's kind. Ministers, Prime ministers, elders and businessmen.
To get a foot hold in the throat cut Somali power structure , one must carry the water for the new powers of 21st century. Corrupt and weak nations of the region suddenly became the indespensible mountain ( buur ku tiirsanow ma maqli jirtay).
Finally, it is too early to see how and when this community will benefit from the Kenyan help.
