Somalia: Galkayo’s peaceful resurgence GALKAYO, Somalia Sep 25 2012 (Garowe Online) – Puntland’s Deputy Police Commissioner, Col. Muhyadin stated that Galkayo’s security has improved drastically during the past months, Garowe Online reports. Col. Muhyadin Ahmed Muse gave an interview to BBC Somali Service on Tuesday in which he stated that the capital of Mudug region, Galkayo’s crime rate had been reduced. “Honestly there has been a transformation in this city and it’s visible by looking at the businesses which are open till late hours, which was uncommon for this city in the past,” said Col. Muhyadin. The Puntland government sent the Deputy Police Commissioner and a contingent of police forces to reinforce security in the region after a spike in murders and crime, including bombings and targeted assassinations. According to the Col. and other Puntland officials, pirates who inhabited the city of Galkayo fled after the Puntland forces' presence was felt. Mudug police forces prior to the intervention lacked adequate vehicles, equipment and communications; however since the arrival of Col. Muhyadin police forces in Mudug region have received better equipment and reinforcements. “There were shortages of equipment and communications but now we have filled the gaps and restored confidence and morale among the forces. Our motto is: 'Galkayo yesterday and Galkayo today," Col. Muhyadin added. “The transformation in Galkayo that you have heard is due to the citizens’ efforts to work with the Puntland Police and could not have been accomplished without them and we thank the public for their support and cooperation,” said Col. Muhyadin. These are Kenyan troops, not Somali troops so what can he exactly do to exact pressure, Mogadishu has no influence of the region, they receive nothing from the government nor do they have contacts.
