May I now be excused oh paradigm of winsomely wonder? (Represses the urge to kiss him) C'mon now, you know I only asked for a little clarification. The threat of being smothered with kisses was totally uncalled for. Just as you said, I am kinda sensitive to some things, i.e. feminine charms, ahem. So graceful of you to get a hold of yourself. I promise not to hallucinate about it.

Talking of hanging, I heard of this saddening incident in Woolwich a week ago, where a disturbed Somali man slaughtered his Somali host. From ear to ear, I hear. Apparently the disturbed man was threatening ninkii guriga dejiyey ee cuntadana ugu daray saying 'mar dhow waan ku gowrici doonaa!'. The host thought ninkuu wuu yara xanuunsan yahay and didn't make anything of the threat, only to have the disturbed man buy a knife from the local hardware store and cut the host's throat while he slept. Waxaa la yiri ninkii wax qalay washed his hands and calmly went to the local marfish, telling the other men 'war ninkii hebel ahaa waan soo qalay'. Even them joked it off but found out the next day that the disturbed man was kidding. It was true. Now when I think of that... somehow this Arsenal fan fades into nothingness.

WA: I am glad to hear that you are an archeologist and that your father too is in the same profession, albeit retired. What we currently need is good archeologists who can help us make sense of both our ancient relics and obscured linguistic etymologies. Doing so will surely locate Somalis in a secure chronology of historical existence, that will perhaps dispell the gloom of tracelessness hanging over us. Contrary to all erroneous theories advanced and meanings attributed to it, the name was a simple Somali noun describing the profession of its speakers, namely SOMAAL. In old Somali, so’ meant meat – now replaced by the modern word HILIB. Among speakers of MAI dialect, however, SO’ was still very much in use and was the only word for meat. The suffix MAAL means to live on or to make gain from. Hence SO’MAAL literally means ‘one who lives on meat’ – in other words a pastoralist. In evidence of the author's re-definition of the name SOMALI, I would like to recite, from memory, a few lines from Sayid Abdulle Hassan's poem 'Xassanoow Hubqaadayye', in which he uses the word 'so'' in its proper manner. The Sayid warns Xassan, his memorizer, of: Wiyyil hadafa, Aar soo handadi, hiijo qabe reemi Hardi madax, hankoobsiga ciddida, mici haliileeysa Hurduf Geri, haraatiga lugeed, Qalanje heeraayya Hunduffaa Dhurwaa iyo Dugaag, So' u halaaqaayya Shabeel horor ah, haariban Dawoco, Haramcad guuxaayya Dhidir halable, halawyaalo weer, haalufada Yey ah Bahal hoose, halaq baas intii, had iyo waabaay leh Haaweeyda meertiyo colkiyo, haayirkiyo tuugga Galow hiririfleeyiyo Jugleey, wadane haw haw leh... Thus, it seems the word 'So'' does mean meat or 'hilib'. which also means that the definition of the name Somali has thus far been a shallow one, and requires further study. If the etymology of some of the Somali words can be found, then, perhaps, new conceptual meanings can be derived. Wacdaraha, I did enjoy it sxb. Thanks.

Yes it is fascinating. Mar horaan akhriyey this article waana very informative. It shows you in af-Soomaaliga conceptual-terms loo isticmaali jirey wax jirey pre-Islamic times ay ku ladhan-yihiin. Waxaana ka mid ah ereyga 'Gowrac', oo uu qoraagu leeyahay waxaa laga la jeedaa: 'Gow' cut, 'Rac' in the name of Ra - Rah being an ancient Pheroanic god. Another word is: 'Waaq' amba 'Waqqaa'. Soomaalidu illaa maanta ereyga 'waqqaa' iyo 'waaq'ba waa laga maqlayaa iyagu leh sida: 'waqqeey iyo weligeey/waaridkeey arrintaasoo kale ima soo marin' ama sheegaya magaalooyinka sida; Ceel-Waaq. Pretty interesting study into the etymology of the Somali language, I'd say. Waa in baaritaanku iyo raad-raacuba (or research) la sii wadaa si inagoon waxba ka ogayn aanan dembiyo ciiddaa ka badan u gelin. Thanks for the topic, W.Aduunkta.
