Somalia: IGAD tough decision against Somaliland Written by Sunatimes Jul 06, 2010 at 03:10 PM ADDIS ABABA (QRN) The leaders of the IGAD member states in East Africa have for the first time approved a political plan put forwarded by the Ethiopian and Djiboutian government aimed to undermine the legacy of Somaliland, a republic now seeking for international recognition. The latest summit held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the IGAD leaders agreed on several key principles in favor of the regional security protection. Frontline state forces should be enabled to enter into Somalia. 2,000 troops from African Union and United Nations must be spread into whole Somalia regardless of Puntland and Somaliland. To spread the current government intelligence service officers throughout Somalia and also to firmly train its police and military troops. 2,000 more troops should be sent into Mogadishu to enforce the African Union peacekeepers. Diplomats attended in the IGAD summit say the decisions made by the member states came after the Ethiopian and Djiboutian governments warned that if Somaliland administration by the new president Ahmed Silanyo should not be intervened it could certainly pose a serious threat on the regional peace and security. The annual reports by the Ethiopian and Djiboutian governments? intelligence officers say that Ahmed Silanyo and his men in the party are members of the Islamic extremists fighting in Somalia like Al-Shabaab and Hizbul Islam. The IGAD decision could be diminish the Somaliland?s hope for recognition as independent state. Somalia: IGAD tough decision against Somaliland

  11. That is way, it is not working. tfg needs to have a somali face, not a clan face. That is way Alshabaab has been so succesful and that is way the military took the power 1969. Somalia need a solution without pro colonial groups North west, North east and moqdisho. Pro colonial groups must be isolated from somali politics otherwise we doomed for ever.
  12. Wonder if the Gabooye tribes voted. They used to be 15% of Hargeysa and Burco population. But many of them moved other part of the country. The remaining families have difficult time there.

Minority groups such as the Gabooyo experience discrimination, mostly for the work they do, such as shoemaking and iron-smelting. In Somaliland, most of the Gabooyo also work as barbers, a job no other clan will perform. Minority groups such as the Gabooyo are not allowed to marry into the larger Somali community or socially interact with them in any way, despite the fact that they are Somalis and Muslims. Jama spoke to IRIN about the plight of his people: “I am the leader of this community in Daami; there are at least 8,000 families here but no one knows or cares we are here. It is as if they [the majority Somaliland clans] don’t see us or know we even exist. “If one of our boys is foolish enough and marries a girl of the majority community, I can guarantee you that he will be killed and so will the girl who marries him. “Imagine, we are all Somalis, Muslims and all God’s children and should be treated equally. When you die your deeds will count, not your clan. “For this entire community, there is not a single facility for mother-child healthcare. We had women who died in childbirth because we have no access to healthcare. As you can see, we have no money to go to private hospitals. “It is [presidential] election time here in Somaliland [voting took place on 26 June] and only one party sent someone to lobby us to vote for their candidate. The others don’t care because we are not an important clan. “We have no representation in the Somaliland government or parliament. If we had representation, we could at least go and complain but who would listen to an old Gabooyo man? When you are not represented anywhere, it means you are not there. “When the new government comes in, all I want is for it to first acknowledge that we are here and are a part of this country and that we are Somalis and we are Muslims. “Please give us our rights. I hope whoever gets elected will do better and address our problems. It is a hope but I don’t expect much to change.” Source: IRIN

  17. Do not compare UK and Somaliland or that matter for US. You and I know no one stayed home for Somaliland election. You could even profit by selling your vote. It was 120% tone out from awdal to togdheer and part of sanaag. People came from village close to Dhagaxbuur and even west to vote. The whole tribe voted. The fact remains that is the true population of Somaliland.
  18. They claimed to be 3.5 million people and 1.6 million registred voters. Every youth and adult voted if not twice and they crossed the border to vote. Finnaly it was only 0.5 million.
