Pew Research study: Most Muslims want sharia law

A Pew Research survey of 38,000 Muslims across 39 countries shows the majority favour the implementation of sharia law - though interpretations of the Islamic law vary widely.

The Pew study, entitled "The World’s Muslims: Religion, Politics and Society" demonstrates that there is no one clear definition of sharia law. Arab News reported special adviser to Pew, Amaney Jamal, said: “Sharia has different meanings, definitions and understandings, based on the actual experiences of countries with or without sharia."

A majority of Muslims in Asia, Africa and the Middle East favoured sharia law being adopted as the law of their countries, with the highest support recorded in Afghanistan at 99 percent.

Sharia is interpreted in varying degrees across the countries surveyed. The majority of those surveyed believe women are obliged to obey their husbands, a view shared by the majority of Muslim women. Support for issues such as polygamy varied widely, with the majority favouring allowing women freedom of choice over the hijab. Notably support for honour killings was only prevalent in Afghanistan and Iraq. Death for apostasy and amputations for theft, were not widely supported tenets of Islam.

The survey found the global median for Muslims opposed to violence in the name of Islam was 72 percent.

In general, religiously observant Muslims who pray five-times-a day are more likely to favour the implementation of sharia. However USA Today reported Jamal noted that "the more experience Muslims had with living with 'a narrow, rigid form of sharia', the less supportive they were of it."

Over a decade of machine guns and bombing; billions of dollars going to wining the hearts and minds of Afghanis, and Hamid Karzai collecting millions of dollars in bags of cash from the CIA for a decade, shows 99% of Afghanis still want sharia as the law of the land.

When most people say they want "Sharia Law"...they have the administration of Omar ibn Khattab in mind. They don't want the Taliban's Administration.

And who wouldn't want to be ruled by a government similar to Omar ibn Khattab's?

This is such common sense logic I'm surprised you missed it.

The only problem for you Dr Kenny is the hallowed, utopian version of sharia so beloved by Muslims is just a figment of their imagination and has no basis in reality. how can you ascertain Omar bin Khattab's time was wonderful, since you are not present. Even a dark history can be whitewashed and people indoctrinated like we see DPRK. The premise of sharia is fundamentally flawed as Muslims in their minds assume supermen will apply it and all will be wonderful. Sharia is a cruel, absurd and regressive system that i would not wish upon anyone.

In my opinion the Sharia law:

1. Promotes peace, righteousness, tolerance, harmony, and justice

2. Makes the welfare of the poor and weak the corner stone of the economic structure of the Islamic society

3. Promotes the wellbeing of families by prioritising the rights of the women and children.

4. Promotes respect and love for one’s parents, relatives, and friends.

5. Promotes animal welfare, environmental protection, and discourages excessive consumerism

6. Promotes the morality and modesty of the individual.

7. Promotes education and open mindedness.

8. Promotes good work ethics and discourages laziness.

7. Promotes politeness and good neighbourliness

8. Discourages greed, deception, and bad business practices

The sharia law is about the wellbeing of the society, the family, and the individual and so those who are against the Sharia law are also against the aforementioned values.

How can I ascertain Khattab's time was wonderful? Well, there's numerous first-hand accounts of people who lived back then, who enjoyed the degree of justice and prosperity which existed back then.

People enjoyed prosperity during the reign of Harun Al-Rashid, during the reign of the Muslims in Spain, and even during the early Ottoman Caliphate...Islam has a long and rich history, and if you think you can point to the actions of a few thugs in Afghanistan and Somalia and think that this is "Shariah Law", then you're mistaken.

Shariah has worked before, it can work again.

If you think the premise of Shariah is flawed, then so is the premise of any other secular institution as it replaces the rule of God with the rule of men, and it gives sovereignty to legislators instead of sovereignty to God.

These examples you cite point to dictatorships. The Taliban was a dictatorship, Amir Godane of Somalia is nothing more than a dictator. And of course people's rights are going to be violated. I would want there to be an Constitutional Islamic Republic in the Muslim world, where there would exist a more just and fair government. But these men in Afghanistan didn't apply Shariah correctly, so it's an irrelevant point.
