Australia cleric defended in rape remarks

Sydney (dpa) - A controversial cleric who said women who didn't wear a veil were "uncovered meat" asking to be raped will keep his job as the spiritual leader of Australia's 350,000 Muslims.

Sheik Taj Din al-Hilali was confirmed as Mufti of Australia on Friday after the governing body of Sydney's largest mosque rallied behind the Egyptian-born cleric.

"The board is satisfied with the notion that certain statements made by the mufti was misinterpreted," Tom Zreika, head of the Lebanese Muslim Association, told local radio. Zreika said the mufti would take "two or three months" off from preaching.

Prime Minister John Howard, who hand-picked al-Hilali for a 14- member Muslim advisory panel, said remarks in Arabic in a fasting- month sermon to 500 worshippers that compared unveiled women to food left for stray cats were "appalling and reprehensible."

Howard warned Muslims they risked a backlash from other Australians if they continued to defend al-Hilali against mainstream opinion. "If it is not resolved, then unfortunately people will run around saying 'Well, the reason they didn't get rid of him is because secretly some of them support his views,'" Howard said.

A year ago there were pitched battles on Sydney beaches between white youths and men of Arabic descent. The Cronulla riots were described as the worst outbreak of racial violence in Australia's history.

Others in Howard's government have called on al-Hilali to be prosecuted for inciting sexual assault, or to be deported.

"If you take out uncovered meat and place it outside on the street, or in the garden, or in the park, or in the backyard without a cover, and the cats come and eat it ... whose fault is it, the cats' or the uncovered meat? The uncovered meat is the problem," al- Hilali said.

In an address that was tape-recorded by The Australian newspaper, Al-Hilali said a woman who stayed home and was veiled would be safe from sexual assault. "If she was in her room, in her home, in her hajib (veil), no problem would have occurred."

Sex Discrimination Commissioner Pru Goward, appointed by Howard to the high-profile post, said suspending al-Hilali for a few weeks was not punishment enough.

"This is a very sensitive time for Australian-Islamic relationships and this sort of excusing only confirms, I am afraid in some people's minds, that there is no serious desire to treat women and men equally and to treat them respectfully," Goward said.

The 66-year-old apologized for offence caused by the comments, saying he had "only intended to protect women's honour," but he refused to withdraw them or resign.

Al-Hilali has stirred controversy before. He has denied the Holocaust, defended suicide bombers, described the 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States as "God's work," and blamed Jews for "all the wars and problems that threaten the peace and stability of all the world."

Al-Hilali, who has not mastered English despite having lived in Australia for 24 years, referred in his sermon to gang rapes in Sydney in 2000 that led to several Muslims being sentenced to long jail terms. He was critical of the judges, saying they had shown no mercy.

Only white women were victims in the gang rapes, and they were told they were targeted because they were "Aussie pigs."

Al-Hilali also caused consternation by saying women were mostly to blame for adultery.

"When it comes to adultery, it's 90 per cent the woman's responsibility," he said. "Why? Because a woman possesses the weapon of seduction."

Waleed Aly, a spokesman for the Islamic Council of Victoria, condemned al-Hilali and called for his resignation, saying his views sought to normalize immoral sexual behaviour. "We would have liked to have seen some form of fairly strong censure just given the magnitude and the gravity of the comments," Aly said.

But other prominent Australian Muslims kept quiet.

Imam Abdul Jalil Sajid, the chairman of the Muslim Council of Great Britain, who is visiting Australia, sprang to his defence. "I know he is one of the greatest Muslim scholars on earth and Australia is blessed with him," Sajid said.

This is the sermon translated from Arabic

----------

“When it comes to adultery, it’s 90 percent the woman’s responsibility. Why? Because a woman owns the weapon of seduction. It’s she who takes off her clothes, shortens them, flirts, puts on make-up and powder and takes to the streets, God protect us, dallying. It’s she who shortens, raises and lowers. Then, it’s a look, a smile, a conversation, a greeting, a talk, a date, a meeting, a crime, then Long Bay jail. Then you get a judge, who has no mercy, and he gives you 65 years.”

“But when it comes to this disaster, who started it? In his literature, writer al-Rafee says, if I came across a rape crime, I would discipline the man and order that the woman be jailed for life. Why would you do this, Rafee? He said because if she had not left the meat uncovered, the cat wouldn’t have snatched it.”

“If you get a kilo of meat, and you don’t put it in the fridge or in the pot or in the kitchen but you leave it on a plate in the backyard, and then you have a fight with the neighbor because his cats eat the meat, you’re crazy. Isn’t this true?”

“If you take uncovered meat and put it on the street, on the pavement, in a garden, in a park, or in the backyard, without a cover and the cats eat it, then whose fault will it be, the cats, or the uncovered meat’s? The uncovered meat is the disaster. If the meat was covered the cats wouldn’t roam around it. If the meat is inside the fridge, they won’t get it.”

“If the woman is in her boudoir, in her house and if she’s wearing the veil and if she shows modesty, disasters don’t happen.”

“Satan sees women as half his soldiers. You’re my messenger in necessity, Satan tells women you‘re my weapon to bring down any stubborn man. There are men that I fail with. But you’re the best of my weapons.”

“...The woman was behind Satan playing a role when she disobeyed God and went out all dolled up and unveiled and made of herself palatable food that rakes and perverts would race for. She was the reason behind this sin taking place.”

The Sheik apologized for any offence caused by his comments, saying:

"I unreservedly apologise to any woman who is offended by my comments," he said in a statement today.

"I had only intended to protect women’s honour, something lost in The Australian presentation of my talk."

"I would like to unequivocally confirm that the presentation related to religious teachings on modesty and not to go to extremes in enticements, this does not condone rape, I condemn rape and reiterate that this is a capital crime.

"Women in our Australian society have the freedom and right to dress as they choose, the duty of man is to avert his glance or walk away.

The Sheik’s comments were condemned as ’un-Australian’ and ’un-Islamic’ and ‘unacceptable” by the NSW Islamic Council. Many other groups condemned the remarks as un-Australian, and asked the Sheik to resign. Australian Prime Minister John Howard condemned the Sheik’s remarks, calling them “appalling and reprehensible.”

"If you take out uncovered meat and place it outside... and the cats come and eat it... whose fault is it, the cats' or the uncovered meat?" asked a senior Muslim cleric [by analogy to scantily dressed women who get raped].

"I do not know about laws in Muslim countries but here in Austrailia, if you place your uncovered meat outside to attract *****, you will be arrested." Responded an Austrailian Police man.

There is truth in what the Mufti said but he was not smart with metaphors comparing women to meat your asking for beat down :D

He should've used better language, historical facts, how the indecency and immorality in western culture is producing vice ect....and how Islam can solve those problems. Bad move for him. Not cool.

That's really sad. He's not capable of serving the spiritual needs of granite boulders.

You misunderstand the concept of freedom of speech. It does not mean you do not face public condemnation if you say something racist, sexist, or just plain stup!d. Freedom of speech means you shouldn't be killed, physically harassed/threatened, etc for expressing your opinion. No one is going to burn down embassies or call for the beheading of this "mufti".

1. Muslims dont need a spirtual leader to serve their "spiritual needs". We have the Quran and Sunnah, sheikhs are just preachers they dont feel spiritual void, no interression in Islam. Its between you and Allah Most High.

2. You realize human beings do have spiritual needs.

I don't think so.

It's sad for Muslim society that learned men have become advocates for rapists and adulterers.

Khalaf,

1. I do realize that. But most people don't directly consult the Qur'an and Ahadith books for spiritual guidance. Most Muslims go to the mosque and ask the Ulama and most take their words as the truth.

2. I believe it's a manufactured need, but yes for most.
