The social-networking website Facebook has launched in Swahili, targeting more than 110m speakers of the language. A group of Swahili scholars launched the new version with the permission of the California-based internet firm. Facebook use has spread over the past five years in East and Central Africa, where most Swahili-speakers live. Analysts say a Hausa version could be launched next in West Africa and Zulu for southern Africa. Facebook already exists in Afrikaans. Symon Wanda, one of the project's initiators, said they wanted to launch a Swahili version to safeguard the future of the language. "The youth, the future generation, if you look at the biggest percentage of users on Facebook, they are the youth," he told the BBC's Network Africa programme. "They can easily navigate through when it's maybe a language they understand, which makes it easier to use the Swahili than to use the English." The BBC's Ruth Nesoba, in Nairobi, says the Swahili site has already been on trial for some time and word has spread quickly. Facebook's Simon Wanda says they have been monitoring the take-up and says more than 60% of Facebook users in East Africa are already using the Swahili version. The bulk of Swahili-speakers live in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, parts of the Horn of Africa, Malawi, Mozambique and the Indian Ocean islands. Facebook already exists in some 50 language versions.

A new system of making payments by mobile phones has been launched in Somaliland. Telesom's Zad service means that people can send money to friends and relatives or pay bills just using their phones. The self-declared republic of Somaliland is much more peaceful than the rest of Somalia. But the telecommunications and money transfer sectors have thrived across the country, despite the conflict which has raged for the past 18 years. Telesom deputy director Mohamud Aden Ahmed-Hadeed told BBC Somali that the service would improve the lives of people and help develop the country. "They can have access to their accounts with a Pin number and they can send money to anywhere, anytime. People can pay their bills or buy things from shops," he said. A similar system was launched in neighbouring Kenya in 2007, with a network of more than 7,000 agents - mostly shopkeepers. Somalia's conflict has forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee the country. They use an informal, trust-based money transfer system known as "hawala" to send money back home. And the lack of a government since 1991 has not prevented several mobile phone companies from setting up their businesses. Aid agencies estimate that some four million people - a third of the population - need food aid.

The Ethiopian government has confirmed it plans to build an extensive railway system, despite some of the world's most challenging terrain. At the moment the country has only one railway - the historic narrow gauge line from the capital Addis Ababa to the neighbouring country of Djibouti. But it is in very poor condition and only half of the line is operational. The plan involves the construction of 5,000km (3,000 miles) of track, mainly for carrying goods, officials say. Renovation project Ethiopia's old imperial railway was built by the French for the Emperor Menelik in the early 20th Century. But it is long past its best There is an average of one derailment a week. But a major European Union-funded renovation project is now under way. Engineers are consolidating embankments, strengthening the bridges, re-laying about one-third of the track, using better quality rails and replacing flimsy metal sleepers with more solid concrete ones. When that is done, the Ethiopian government intends to embark on its even more ambitious plan - to create a whole new rail system. This time it will be standard gauge, electrified to make use of Ethiopia's huge hydro power potential. It is primarily aimed at goods traffic. The man in charge, Getachew Betru, said such a system would make a huge contribution to Ethiopia's development. One of the reasons Ethiopia had stayed poor, he said, was because it was not connected. And, he said, railways were inherently much more popular with the poor than - for instance - the donor-funded tarmac road network that is mostly used by tourists and aid workers. The government is still looking for partners to build the new railway. But it says it is convinced that trains will be the transport of the future in Ethiopia.

People are dying in our capital for drops of water to drink, for the last six years. What a crying shame to humanity! Releasing delusive reports to the International Community, is a proof of their mischief and double standard policy. All in all, the political cold shoulder to our cause, and the chilling phrases they say, when it comes to the true reflection of this helpless nation, is a compelling evidence of their hidden agenda. They have a draft budget to funds that bury our entity as a sovereign State. Using Somalia letter headed stationary in their offices here in Somaliland, is one of the great ironies they practice. The UNDP wants to rip us out of our social, cultural, and political identity as Somalilanders. That is the straw that broke the camel’s back! We will tell that sad story to our school children. The collateral damage they impose on us outweighs what we benefit from their ill dirty looks. Mr.UNDP, if we are wild animals; you are wild hunters too. What is next? I am afraid that they may introduce the Mass – Gay – Wedding - Rally in our towns for the ongoing modernization process. What a stark picture!
