Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), Hargeisa University, Somaliland Hope Exchange Program Jenner spent a week at Hargeisa in August discussing the feasibility of an alliance between EMU and the Somaliland school, and left impressed with the region’s political climate."Somaliland is quite peaceful," said Jenner. "The people there are very proud of their elected democratic government. I felt completely safe there". By: Tom Mitchell EMU and a university in the African nation of Somaliland are collaborating on an exchange program as part of a plan to boost peace efforts in the troubled nation. EMU and the University of Hargeisa in Somaliland, have agreed to a cultural exchange of faculty. Somaliland lies within the physical borders of Somalia, but declared its independence from the nation in 1991 due to broad civil unrest in the rest of the country. Though it held elections and has a democratically elected government. Experience Helped Win Grant The partnership between the two schools will involve visits by instructors from both universities to each other’s campus over the next three years, said Amy Potter, associate director for the Practice Institute, a branch of the Center for Justice and Peacebuilding at EMU. At both sites, staff from each school will teach classes in conflict resolution to faculty and students, said Potter. The project will use funds from a $400,000 grant from Higher Education for Development (HED), a program sponsored by the U.S. Agency for International Development, said Potter. EMU received the grant after responding to a notice by HED earlier this year seeking a university willing to participate in the exchange program. EMU’s past involvement in similar projects made the Harrisonburg school an ideal choice for the exchange program with Somaliland. "We had some good experience in helping other programs get started in other countries," said Potter. Somaliland ‘Quite Peaceful’ Janice M. Jenner, director of the Practice Institute spent a week at Hargeisa in August discussing the feasibility of an alliance between EMU and the Somaliland school, and left impressed with the country’s political climate. "Somaliland is quite peaceful," said Jenner. "The people there are very proud of their elected democratic government. I felt completely safe there." The vast majority of the 3.5 million people of Somaliland are Sunni Muslims. A little more than half of the population is nomadic or semi-nomadic, with the rest living in urban centers, like the city of Hargeisa, Burao, Boroma, Las Anood, Berbera, Erigavo and other smaller towns. Cultural Bonds Barry Hart, associate professor of trauma and conflict studies at EMU, and an instructor at EMU in conflict transformation, is one of three instructors from EMU who will go to Hargeisa next spring to teach and work with faculty from the latter university. Staff from EMU, said Hart, will help officials at Hargeisa Univeristy to create a curriculum that, they hope, eventually will the people of region how to resolve their differences. Hart and others from EMU involved in the exchange program hope that their initiative in Hargeisa will enable the university there to help pave the way for peace throughout the rest of region. Citizens of region have enough in common culturally to make peace possible, said Hart, adding that he and other EMU officials hope that the people of Somaliland "can, over time, become a catalyst for change." Yeah ,, Some odayaal did the same thing before the LA was libarated and some ppl were spreading that all over the websites but it never changed the reality and LA has been peacefully libarated by its inhabits. The Boocame declaration is not more than some odayaal oo xamaasad qabyaaladeed hayso and nobody will support them to shed the blood of their people for nothing more than one man's intention. Less than one hour a really big contradiction started to come from the same place where the shirka uu ka socday ,,,, here is one while THIS one came right after that one. YOu can already sense the contradiction and some ppl want to put this the way they like. In less than 24 hours, some websites from Sool started to question about the final declaration and argued that is was not fair at all and this is not what expected from those in Boocame. THIS is one of them. Those in Boocame, they never discussed about what is good for reer sool, the development, solving the internal differences and so on ,,,, they were there for few days this is what finally came. I was communicating with some ppl in LA and they were really disappointed. EXPECTATIONS: Some of the participants will soon announce their opposition to the declaration and that is not what they signed or discussed during the meeting. Others will declare that shirka looma dhamayn (which is true) and this is the only part that was supporting garowe who made such conclusions. The politicians, aqoonyahans and other officials will all come agains this (they are already against it) and start mobilizing their people against more death and destruction. CALCULATION: This is not going to change anything on the ground. The Sool people, the world, the neighboring countries, and everybody knows the reality and that is it. Deffections are also expected in the coming days.

This is just the same declaration some made before the LA was libarated ,,,, a really good chance for Somaliland

This is the story of Africa. Everybody and almost every country is yelling for a change in terms of the leadership and policies but does that mean that change will bring any change ? The best example is Kenya. People have been shouting and struggling to get rid of Daniel Arab Moi because they felt like he is remaining on power too long and they are fed up with his policies and government. This continued for years and years, politicians have been arrested, civil society activists were jailed and a lot of things happened but finally the Kenyans were happy that they finally changed the government and elected their own administration so that they will breath a new fresh air. They expected they will soon feel the wind of change coming from Nairobi to wipe out the corruption, the major problem in that country as well as the poverty and so on. Did they enjoy that ?? Kibaki came to over the power and the change has been never done, well, not yet. I was reading Odinga’s speech for the preparation of the coming elections and he was still yelling for a change. He mentioned that if he is elected that will be the final and real change for the country and peoole. The same question is still valid as we will see the same statements even if he is elected. Examples and many in Africa and we will go on if we want to bring more examples like that but I think that is enough. As for Somaliland, yes people want a change and that was the case for the last 20 years. People fought against the last dictator, Siad Barre because of his brutality just to have change in the leadership so that they will be better. After the regime there have been clashes and there was a question about what that change has brought for the public. Then the first government was appointed and again people were fed up with Abdirahman Tur because his government was weak and he couldn’t do what he was expected to do. Then again there was a change, I say a really big change. People were happy that at least there was someone to trust about his background and personality. President Egal although he did many things that no one has done it before but people were soon fed up with him and then wanted a change, well another change. After his death then the current president was elected and again now people want a change. Yeah it is true people want a change but one thing we have to make sure is if that change will really bring a change. HERE
