After the entry of the Ethiopian troops, who were driving forty battlewagons, in Hiiraan Region, it is said that their entry is part of a tripartite plan to weaken the power of the armed Islamists opposed to the government. The information we received indicate that the role of the Ethiopian troops will be to capture Galgaduud, Hiiraan, Bakool and Gedo regions while collaborating with Somali government forces. These forces are said to be destined for Baled Weyne and Jowhar. The preparations for the accomplishment of the plan is under way as the Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi phoned Somali President Shaykh Sharif, who is currently in Libya, over the issue. The two leaders discussed the military plan. Reports indicate that Meles Zenawi asked permission for his troops to enter Somalia and reach Jowhar and Beled Weyne so as to destroy Islamist forces who are based there. The president`s decision over the issue is not yet clear. Joint Kenyan-Somali troops are also expected to enter the Lower Jubba Region and reach up to Mudul-Baraawe (southern Somalia). US and European commanders are said to be behind the plan scheduled to begin at the same time. AMISOM (AU troops) and government forces are to take control of Mogadishu, Ceelasha Biyaha, Afgooye, Marka, Balcad from the armed groups. Somalia: Puntland court sentences former governor 13 Oct 13, 2009 - 11:03:12 AM BOSSASO, Somalia Oct 13 (Garowe Online) - A former provincial governor was sentenced to serve a six-month term in a court in Somalia's Puntland region, Radio Garowe reports. The Bossaso Court listened to the case against Mr. Abdinur Gessey, the former governor of Mudug region, who was arrested by Puntland police in August in connection with the assassination of Puntland's late information minister, Mr. Warsame Abdi "Sefta Bananka." Mr. Mohamud Hassan Osman, Puntland's prosecutor-general, presented a case against the former governor who was sentenced to serve six months in jail. Mr. Osman said five suspects who escaped were sentenced in absentia, with the two killers sentenced to death and the three accomplices sentenced to serve 15 years each. Mr. Gessey, who spoke in court, said he did not show up at the burial of the late Information Minister because he was ill. He stated that he ordered local police to catch the killers immediately after the deadly shooting in Galkayo on Aug. 5, 2009, when Mr. Warsame Abdi lost his life. It is the first time in Puntland's 11-year history that an active provincial governor was arrested for a crime and sentenced in court.
