  1. 30 died and many more are missing, probably dead. These desperate folks don't need educating, they need a life that offers hope. They wouldn't pass through these hostile shores or be vulnerable to smugglers if they had any hope for themselves or their children. The purpose of life? Maybe ease the suffering of a fellow human or two. I don't know.
  2. Amen . Even greater being a white woman. Affirmative action's been busting down doors for them since the 70s. Somalis number in the tens of thousands in Ontario and you'd be hardpressed to find professional associations that provide mentorship or even reference letters. 3. WaterLily, Many graduates of what are termed the 'soft' fields: humanities and social sciences, find themselves struggling to find entry-level work in their fields. Unfortunately, no one tells uni students that there are no such things as entry-level for many of these fields. I've seen students in Psychology, English and even Journalism struggle to find first jobs. Here's the catch: 1. The most successful students/graduates are the ones who did cooperative/intern terms during their studies and were able to make connections. 2. Many fields like the ones I've mentioned above require more schooling (going for an MA or practical master's such as MBA) to secure work. 3. There are little guarantees even for people in technical fields like Enginnering unless they are able to secure real work experience BEFORE graduating through work/study or cooperative terms. 4. Sending out resumes blindly is often a passive job search (as opposed to cold-calling every person and their aunt Judith) with the person simply sending out a resume and praying someone will call and offer an interview/job. Most employers (and I know lots) simply advertise but will grab the first person Ann from accounting or Adam from acquisitions brings in as it saves precious HR hours in sifting through CVs and cover letters. Make those CALLS, if you know someone who knows someone, call them. It is frustrating and for many Somalis (as visible minorities) almost impossible to find work easily. The key, however, is to be flexible and not shy away from quickly leaving one field and getting practical training in another when the doors remain closed. Best of luck .
  4. Rampant, yes. But would nationhood (collaborating with members of outside tribes) have evolved under the pressures of modernisation and development? The rest of her responses indicate that peaceful interactions between tribes were the norm in Nigeria and would have supported the birth of a central (federal) authority had the divide-and-conquer politics of colonialism not widened rifts and animosities.
  5. Would Somalis have cared less about tribalism if nationhood wasn't imposed by colonial powers? Check out the answer to this question posed to a former Minister of Education about tribalism in Nigeria, Mrs. Tejumade Alakija: "In the past, nobody laid emphasis on the “tribal†sentiment, as it were. The founding fathers were more interested in developing their individual regions. The word, “tribalism†connotes under-development and its attendant evils; we are made up of proud nations, and we get on as one group. Like I said earlier, the leaders led their individual groups -- not to the detriment of others -- but making sure that each entity was successful, and had their demands and aspirations met by the federal government. In those days, we operated as independent regions, which were not subservient to the centre. Yet, it was not a weak federal government, and each region cooperated on relevant issues with one another". http://www.nigeriavillagesquare1.com/Articles/CAchebe/Archives/2005_10_01_index.html
  6. Actually, only a small fraction of Somalis are outside of Somalia and the oral nature of the language will protect it for some time to come. Once (if) the country becomes stable  , and an education system is established that uses probably a mix of Arabic and English, we may have to deal with the erosion of the language among new generations getting a formal education. Originally posted by juba: Somali is in danger because most of the population is located otuside of Somalia and the coming generations will only speak english, swedish, and arabic. This is a result of the state of Somalia. If it was stable more people would stay and our culture wouldn't be faced with possible extinction. [/QB]
  7. Probably. The Simon Wiesenthal Center uses the anti-semitism outcry as a great smokescreen for the Jewish occupation of Palestine. Screaming up and down about arab media is an aversion tactic: covering up policies of land-grabbing, home destruction, and unlawful imprisonment. 8. Callypso, By an honest relationship, I meant a relationship of equals as adults where thoughts can be expressed without guilt-tripping and intimidation. I agree that love and concern for one's parents are fundamental to that relationship. In this particular story, the father clearly wants to bankroll his irresponsible choices using his adult children. As Castro asked, when does it end? This is only one person's story but the underlying sentiment is the same. Are parents exempt from being told the truth because we're raised a certain way in our culture? The truth in this case of siblings would be their ability to say we don't have any money to support a family of seven (and probably growing) in an expensive city. Originally posted by Callypso: Naden, quote: Do you think this reverence sometimes blocks an honest relationship with a father (or a mother)? What do you mean by an honest relationship? I love my mom and dad, but they are my parents, not my friends or siblings. We don't run in the same circles, we don't have the same interests or concerns, and we don't always see eye to eye. That is a honest relationship. I would Those kids are my little brothers and sisters, after all.
  9.   Castro, I edited the phrase, I meant the ability to say leave me alone (or f*** off). Funny thing about the 'nothing to say to each other'. Their conversations go like this: Son: Iskawaran, aabo Dad: Send me money Son: Okay Dad: Send it now Son: Okay Long Pause....long pause....long pause Son: Dahabshiil or Amal Dad: Dahabshiil Son: Okay It would be funny if it weren't so sad. Originally posted by Castro: Full adult relationship? I'm afraid to ask what that means.
  10. I had an interesting conversation with a couple of friends (siblings) whose father lives in South Africa. They spent the better part of the last few years complaining about their 65+ year old father marrying another woman and now having 5 kids under the age of 8 that they send money back home to support. The complaints aren't about the money as much as they are about their (adult) relationship with their father. We talk about fathers who know nothing about their kids' earlier years (school, birthdays, measles, all the childhood good stuff) but magically appear when their children are adults. They wonder why they can't talk to their father like adults, tell him how they feel, how they can't afford to send money or don't want to send money. Conversations always go back to the reverence of parents/responsibility towards them in a culture. Do you think this reverence sometimes blocks an honest relationship with a father (or a mother)?
  11. What part is particularly funny, my comment or the attached incident? A beating very quickly becomes a murder and the killing of the Cameroonian student was done by youth as well. Originally posted by Jaylaani: ^^^R U kidding me.
  12. The issue is much more serious than a 'dude kicked around few times'. Racial violence against African students in Russia is widespread and serious. People being shot or whatever in North America is a completely different animal. BBC NEWS Monday, 26 December 2005, 06:30 GMT Murder of African alarms Russia A Russian youth movement allied to President Vladimir Putin is to demand action against racist violence after the murder of an African student. A spokesman for Nashi (Our People) said it wanted public condemnation of rising racial intolerance in St Petersburg, Mr Putin's native city. A Cameroonian was stabbed to death and a Kenyan citizen wounded in attacks in the city on Saturday evening. Russian prosecutors say they suspect both crimes were racially motivated. The Cameroonian, identified as Kanhem Leon, was attacked by a group of five or six youths dressed in dark clothing and black hats, a spokeswoman for the St Petersburg prosecutor said. A Namibian student with the victim managed to escape from the scene, said Yelena Ordynskaya. The Kenyan was attacked 300 metres away at around the same time. Student anger A spokesman for Africans in the city, named as Desire Defoe, was quoted by Russian media as saying that foreign students in St Petersburg planned to hold a protest shortly. Nashi said they wanted to raise xenophobic attacks with the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation, a recently created advisory body. "We demand that the St Petersburg authorities stop the outrages in the city," said Nashi press secretary Ivan Mostovich. The head of Russia's Students' Union, Nikita Chaplin, has called on President Putin and the government to oversee the investigation into Saturday's attacks personally. "It is unlikely that local authorities have the ability to investigate them," he told a Moscow radio station. According to figures from the Moscow Bureau of Human Rights, there were three times as many fatal racial attacks in Russia in the first six months of 2005, compared with the whole of 2004. 14. With the fighting between tribes and subtribes in the past few weeks (years? ), maybe the transmitter should be inserted in people of the opposing tribe. Here's how it will work: 1) Grab a farax wandering, looking for water for his herd. 2) Stick the transmitter in the fleshiest part of his istakiin body (probably the a** ). 3) Set him near the imaginary borderline as he cusses your mama and her mama. 4) Next time he (or others of his tribe - equally inoculated) wander past said imaginary line, a silent alarm (or a loud one like a church bell) goes off. 5) Targeted assault happens with little collateral damage of other tribes. Never mind those emaciated lions with nubbins for teeth, it is the farax from the other tribe who should have the bullseye.
  15. LOL . Wasn't it Henry David Thoreau who said most men live lives of quiet desperation?
  16. Nothing more unattractive than a Somali sounding like a gap-toothed, under-educated skinhead. It is wholly irresponsible to speak so lightly about the killing of one person not to mention an entire group. It is wise to think before you utter such horrid inanities. 19. Oh please, stuff that whining  . Muslims would never issue a bill, they wouldn't lobby for a by-law to muzzle a couple of pets down the street. Jews have their sh*t on lockdown, complete from politics to media to entertainment, check out the opposition to placing the movie Paradise Now under Palestine in the Oscar race: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/4715168.stm. Israel denies it but I'm sure a few lobbyists in Hollywood are pushing for it. Let's can the rhetoric and get our affairs in order. 20. No I can't, unfortunately. Originally posted by Castro: I can't. Can you? P.S. There's no record R H.R. 3077 ever passed the Senate and became law. If it did, it was probably ammended to death. [/qb]
  21. Here's another link (hope it works): http://www.arabnews.com/?page=4&section=0&article=41466&d=19&m=3&y=2004&pix=world.jpg&category=World This bill was introduced in 2004 and widely accepted by the House of Representatives. Its goal was to monitor any criticism of Israel   . Not sure if it's become a law since then. This is not surprising given that people from the Simon Wiesenthal center have been keeping an eye on just about any meeting/debate involving 3 or more people that might even come close to discussing anything Jewish/Israel related. Can you imagine arabs/muslims organizing themselves to keep an eye on just about any utterance that may affect them?
  22. I don't know where you live but in my block, city or workplace, sleeping with a 13 year old child is a crime punishable by law. I gather the sexual relationships you allude to are those between consenting adults. Sleeping with half a village before marrying or reaching 40 is not considered illegal (haram, most likely) but everyone who is posting opinions on this thread knows bloody well this old bag of bones circumvents the 4 wives rule of the sharia to get as much fresh booty as possible. Please. Pedophile, akhas, STI all apply not to mention ufff, danyer, khakh tofuuu (horking, if wondering). Originally posted by Ducaqabe: I wonder if you would put forward the same reaction knowing people in your block, or city whom you go to school or work with, have as many sexual partners as you can image, probably more than 58 before they tie the knot or reach 40 years. 23. Callypso, in more instances than not (at least in Canada), the two are related with the more caruur the more cayr. Only the most vigilant and available of parents can be involved in their children's education. The unfortunate thing is that the introduction of welfare and social assistance made many of the educational gains of African American gains shrink with its widespread introduction in the 1960s. Many social scientists think it was parochial and took the power and responsibility out of the hands of mothers and fathers. Originally posted by Callypso: I suggest Somali parents in Britain spend less time fiddling with buugta cayrta and more time overseeing buugta carruurtooda. I have never seen a less ambitious community of Somalis. Unless things have changed in the last couple of years, Maryooley in the UK don't work, don't own businesses, and don't make any effort to improve their children's access to education and resources.
  24. Israel has to be forcefully injected into any discussion about arabs and/or muslims because how else would: 1. Mubarak use a state of emergency provision to squash opposition for 24 years, guarantee himself and his cronies a 30 year rule and allow his son to siphon off the country's economy. 2. The Fatah folk in Palestine to use aid to build million dollar mansions in the middle of 50% unemployment rates and dire economic conditions in a land of desperate youth. So many other arab/muslim leaders need Israel to distract and inflame so they could rob their countries blind. It helps that the majority of muslim people in that region are illiterate and poor. Originally posted by Yeniceri: ^^ But give me breathing space so I can bash these maryoweyn suckas! p.s. I don't blame Israel for anything. They're following their national interests. Time to stop playing the blame game and take responsiblity for our collective faults: Muslim disunity is caused by the Muslims' lack of cooperation and consultation. How does Israel fit into that equation?
  25. Brother Khayr, I was hoping you would come back with a more substantiative support for your arguments but I am disappointed and frankly a bit bored. You want my reaction to these pictures? Here it goes: OH WOW, how many muslims can put on clothes (colour-matched and all), put together posters, and march in a group? Mashallah, we sure made our prophet(pbuh) proud!!!!!!! Proof of exactly what is in the pictures? I still think this is a trivial issue even a laughable one and I am leaving this topic now but will happily return if you present another argument.
