We Somalis love what is westernized ourselves and you just have to look at the pride and jubilations that come about a result of holding a western passport coupled with the free education that is passed on to us without any cost and degrees that many here are so proud of. What has education and degrees got to do with being western? Speak for yourself brother regarding western society. For I grew up in the west, got a British passport and I do owe a debt to this Island and so do 250,000 fellow Somali’s who have found shelter here. Westerners did not invent education, or models for human progress this is a general human trait and in which they have taken ideas and concepts from many civilisations including the Islamic one. Arabic numerals are an example. My point has not been to shun western systems and models. On the contrary one should learn from the west all that is beneficial and that can help ensure the survival of ones nation. Hard work, pluralistic society and educational and technological systems and models should be embraced. Instead what I witnessed in Dubai was the mimicking of western lifestyle in general in the areas of fashion, music the acquisition of luxury goods. Is this progress? I think some here do not want to engage in the issues. The UAE, is a weak country that exists in a very tough neighbourhood, Iran and Israel and chaotic Iraq are all near. To make maters worse its population as I saw is wholly dependent on foreigner labour, now what should a Somali person envy from this? As for matters of individual choice, I don’t mean to insult my people who live and work there or those like Ameena who want to move there. That’s not what this is about. When Insha Allah Somalia recovers we need to learn from the failures of our Arab kin in the Gulf, that’s the crust of the matter.

Michael Schumacher oo 10 Milyan ugu deeqay Asia, Carabse maxey ku deeqday? Editorial - Arbaco, Janaayo 5 2005 19:00GMT Ninka caalamka ugu haysta tartanka wadida gawaarida, 7 goorna ku guuleystay tartankaaas loo yaqaan Formula One ayaa $10,000,000 (Toban Milyan oo Doolarka Mareykanka) ugu deeqay dadkii ku waxyeeloobay bad gariirkii 26kii bishii December ka dhacay wadamo badan oo ku yaala badweynta Hindiya. Michael Schumacher oo u dhashay dalka Jarmalka isla markaana sanadkii lasoo dhaafay markii 7aad ku guuleystay tartanka gaari wadida, ayaa sheegay inuu ka damqaday dhibaatadii ku habsatay dadkii uu badgariirku saameeyay. "Sanadkii hore ma aheyn mid farxad ku dhamaada, sababtoo ah masiibo xoog badan ayaa ku habsatay dalalka Asia, waan la murugooneynaa dadkii ku waxyeeloobay dhibaatadaas, waana u baroordiiqeynaa" ayuu yiri Michael Schumacher. Iyadoo dhimashada uu sababay bad gariirka maalinba maalinta ka dambeysa sii kordheyso ayaa waxey dowladaha caalamku ku deeqayeen lacago fara badan. Dowlada Australia ayaa noqotay dowlada lacagta ugu badan ku deeqday, iyadoo balan qaaday lacag gaareysa $1,000,000,000 (Hal Bilyan oo Doolarka Australia). Waxaa xiga Jarmalka oo ku deeqay 500,000,000 (Nus Bilyan Euro), sidoo kale wadankan Japan ayaa ku deeqay $500,000,000 (Nus Bilyan Dolarka Mareykanka). Halka Mareykanku ay kaalinta 4aad ku jiraan, iyagoo ku deeqay lacag gaareysa $350,000,000 (Sadex Boqol iyo Kontan Milyan Doolarka Mareykanka). Lacagahan ka imaanaya wadamada galbeedka ka sokow, waxaa la filayey in wadamada Khaliijku ku deeqaan lacago fara badan maadaama dalka dhibaatada ugu weyni soo gaartay ee indonesia uu yahay dalka ugu weyn dunida Muslimka. Balse nasiib daro wadanka Sacuudiga oo ku deeqay lacagta ugu badan ayaa bixiyay $30,000,000 (Sodon Milyan Doolarka Mareykanka), halka Kuwait ay bixisay lacag u dhiganta inta uu bixiyay ciyaaryahanka reer Jarmal Michael Schumacher, taasoo ah 10,000,000 (Toban Milyan oo Doolarka Mareykanka). Waa ayaan daro in hal qof oo reer galbeed ah iyo dowlad kamid ah dowladaha ugu qanisan dunida Muslimka ay dhaqaale isla'eg ugu deeqaan wadanka ugu weyn dunida Muslimka ee ay asiibtay musiibo aad u daran. Kaba sii darane wadamada Khaliijka ayaa dhaqaalaha ay ku deeqeen badankii u leexiyay wadamada Srilanka iyo Thailand. Waxaa xusid mudan in markii 2001kii ay qaraxyadu ka dhaceen dalka Mareykanka uu Amiir Waliid Bin Talaal oo ka tirsan boqortooyada Sacuudiga lacag gaareysa 14 Milyan oo doolar ugu deeqay magaalada New York, taasoo uu duqa magaalada New York diiday in uu aqbalo, kuna celiyay amiirka. Haatan oo ay shacabka Muslimka ah ee reer Indonesia u baahan yihiin gurmadka walaalahooda Muslimka ah Amiir Waliid Bin Talaal iyo qoyska maryaha waaweyn ee uu ka tirsan yahay wax war ah lagama hayo oo nimco ayey dhex dabaalanayaan. Qaab dhaqanka hogaamiyeyaasha wadamada Khaliijka waa mid laga yaqyaqsoodo, lagana xishoodo, ciil iyo caro fara badana ku beeraya qof kasta oo raacraaca, waxaanse qormadeenan kusoo gaba gabeyneynaa Allaah waa arkaa cadli darada, dulmiga, duqyaanka, iyo kibirka ay caadeysteen Carabta maryaha waaweyn ee nimcada loogu deeqay. My thread is not an attack on Arab people, in these posts the term “Arab†is used exclusively to describe governments and systems. These posts are mainly about Dubai and the Gulf Arab states. OG-Girl let me start by thanking you for your post. Indeed I had some fun in Dubai, after all I am human. OG-Girl “only thing the Arabs have is oil and they are selling that and the west are paying money for that.†You hit the nail on the head. Is it not disturbing that these Gulf States have existed half a century now and they only have Oil to trade with? Does this fact not show that they are failures? As you know fossil fuels will either run out or alternative sources of energy will be found. What then, will they do ,go back to the deserts and tend to their camels? Does it not make you feel mad that, India “that starving nation†is technologically and millitarily superior to the whole Arab world? It has sent its own satellites to space and has an army that’s not only formidable but equipped with nukes? In terms of trade it is one way, their [Western] companies have a share in the Arab oil, while the Arabs have no siqnificant share in western brands. Did you know that Coca Cola and M&S give some of their profits to Israel? Would it not be good to get alternative brands local brands? What I saw in Dubai, was a local population who did not have a care in the world. The question is will they be ready when the bubble burst? Everybody needs Nike Is that a fact, so without Nike, civilisation as we know it would end? And lets not trivialise the subject by attacking my person. I do own western brands but that’s neither here nor there, for I know as an individual I contribute far less to the economy and well being of Zionist Israel than your beloved UAE. OG-Girl Look at the American money is going to China and this is not a love for the starving Chinese people but to make more money for the Americans I think you need to do more research on this dear, for the Peoples Republic of China is neither poor nor is it only getting US money. China is the world’s factory and the fastest growing economy on the planet. Shanghai makes Dubai look like a village and guess what it was built entirely by Chinese. The thing is China is growing technologically, economically and militarily and it does not kiss *** , so why do the Arabs? Ever heard of HSBC, oh I know they got that in Dubai, who owns it? All the western brands you wear, where were they manufactured? These countries have used the western model and applied hard work and innovation to make it their own which has enabled them to stand on their own feet. While India and China want to lead the Gulf Arab folks want to be led. OG-Girl Pakistan are so great to you and can defend their "dignity" why don’t they defend their Muslims brothers/sisters, even better why don’t they defend their own kind in Kashmir? Again hit the books, for without Mohamed Ali Jinna the founder of Pakistan, the Muslim’s of the Indian subcontinent would be under Hindu tyranny. Islamabad [oh what a name], already controls half of Jammu and Kashmir and now is negotiating with India to solve this complex problem. Compare and contrast this to the Middle East in which the whole Arabs are negotiating with Israel over 22% of historical Palestine. OG-Girl Baghdad is gone and you can stay here and cry or do something about it. One must start with analysing the problem, why we Muslim’s and specially Gulf Arabs are so dependent on the west when other states are not? understanding that Mogadishu, Dubai and Baghdad are intertwined and not separate could be a winndow of opportunity for all of us. The models available such as the Dubai one are not appropriate for the task ahead. OG-Girl About Al-Aqsa people whom dying for are Arabs even thought is all Muslims' duty to fight for! Palastinians are Arab and Gulfians you attacking them are Arabs! If there is difference for you , they are same to me , they are "my" people I did not get the whole of the above statement. Let me try yes the Palestinians are Arabs, but their situation was made worse by selfish Gulf States as is the case of the Iraqi’s. OG-Girl I appreciate when you took the time to read my words and hear from locals like moi Always my sister

From the beginning I tried to make it clear earlier Smith quote I do not mean to insult nor, flatter the Arabs so please let me add some points regarding Dubai. However some of the defenders of the Earth led by NGOON, made the claim in their opinion that the thread proved the long standing Somali envy of oil rich Arabia. It was at this point that I tried to reassure that this was not the case and in fact I was not an Arab basher. As the thread only gave my opinion on Dubai. earlier Smith quote I for one have always held the Arabs in high esteem for our noble Prophet (SCW) was born from this race. Their language is the language of heaven and of course the Somali’s are a kin to the Arabs. However my trip and observation have been turned into a self-indulgent contest to prove how much we the Somali’s hate the success of the Arabs. Now if one down played the history, language, culture and temporal achievements of the race in question then by all means one has a problem. All I tried to do was give my observation of Dubai, which in my opinion is a city build on quicksand and which benefits the West more than it does the Arabs. NGOON says Still, the issue here is not Dubai or what the people of Dubai do; the issue is one of bandwagons. NGOON and his self importance , it was him and the defenders who turned the thing into something else. The underlying message here is that the poor backward Somali’s have no right in analysing other cultures specially successful ones like the Gulf Arabs. However, none of this explains the obsession many Somalis have with the Arabs in general and the Gulf States in particular! Why for instance did we have FOUR concurrent and long threads about the Arabs on this site? Again Mr NGOON is consistent with his message and supports the point I made earlier, that the inferior Somali has no place in giving his own opinion specially one that might be seen as critical to “successful†nations in this example the UAE. NGOON I don’t want to guess or assume. I might be too much of a dreamer but I was under the impression that intelligent and rational people populated this site! So, when I read pieces that could have been written by the uninformed attendant in my local coffee shop, I can’t help but look down my nose at the whole thing. This is a classic NGOON diatribe, in which he puts down the whole argument while convincing himself that he is not one of the dumps, irrational, uninformed SOL members. Is all this to cover up the fact that the boy has no argument apart from messaging his overblown ego I will finish with a Quote from Brotha Man What i fail to Understand, honestly i dont even want to know why, but i wonder why you have to come day in day out and 'defend' arabia when its not even neccesary to be defended, coz honestly, theres nothing mr smith said that needed defending, all he merely did was point out how fake dubai is. How and why you are ranting about somalis A B and C, Astonishes me.

An emotional comeback by Ayoub welcome back, welcome back welcome back. By the way and how long is the distance between Djabouti and Jigjiga? -
Just Cause, I dont know where you are getting your figures Britian alone is pledging more than 100 million dollars. When you hear Libya will donate $2 million and Micheale Schumacher formula 1 champion donating 10 million you get the picture right. Another thing this Tsunami has caused havoc to Mulsim states such as Malaysia, Somalia and Indonesia. The later losing nearly 100,000 people. Yet people are making excuses.

I'll go to enjoy some coffee better than QAAAT anyway So true, Qaat is shitt. stop taking it so personally, ppl

My sister LOL If you wanna know about me, PM aight. As for your answers they seemed rushed, go over them again. Pakistan has a Nuclear bomb, to defend themselves against India and other enemies. Dubai has nice resturents, not much of a defence against Arial Sharon now is it? Qorshel, good points bro. NGOON, hiding behind the ladies huh?
-
Princes is right... The Saudi's Paid $50 billion to get Iraq out of Kuwait and this money went to who else. 94,000 Indonesains perished, more than half the whole number of souls lost to the Tsunami disaster. Japan has pledged 500 million dollars  Gulf states are a joke, but NGOON[the self hating Somali] will no doubt give us his waffle as usual.
-
NGOON and his psychoanalysis, the old dude never seizes to amaze. Now let’s start. I believe the Gulf Arab states serve no purpose whatso ever other than to defend the bloated royal families and their masters the West.[i know its not a new argument] They are nothing to envy but are entities that should be despised. In terms of culture education and even religion they have done a disservice to their own citizens and made a mockery of the name of Islam and have turned the word "Arab" into the 21 centuries "Jew". I for one have always held the Arabs in high esteem for our noble Prophet (SCW) was born from this race. Their language is the language of heaven and of course the Somali’s are a kin to the Arabs. Allah has made the Gulf Arabs rich with money, yet what have they achieved with this heavenly ordained wealth, have they even managed to educated their masses?[ on a level with developed countries] Have they created a new era of social prosperity and economic progress? For today the Muslim nation as a whole is in dire straits and the Arabs are being hunted worldwide. How can one defend the Gulf States? They have wealth but they lack power, for their sole existence goes against the interest of their own people. Dubai thus a mere token of the West’s appreciation for their cooperation. But where is Baghdad our capital[my place of birth], where is Al Quds our holly city? One must not be so blind to the truth. Let’s now look at other examples of nation development including Muslim ones. In a short time the Malaysians and Indonesians achieved great economic progress without having the black gold. Using their population’s talent they have become efficient traders. The Chinese are experiencing what some analysts refer to as the greatest economic boom in the history of mankind. Pakistan for all its disadvantages stands dignified for it has the capacity to defend itself and created with its own knowledge the world’s only Islamic bomb. Turkey united and strong is knocking on Europe’s door and sees itself as an equal to Germany, France and Great Britain. These examples above are the models that one can be envious of, for the Gulf Arabs are rich but undignified; they have plenty but lack knowledge. For all their highways they are unable to even defend themselves, which out to be the first task of a sovereign nation state [israle shadow hangs long over the Gulf]. They wear Gucci sunglasses but have no vision. Now, NGOON defend the Gulf Arabs without insulting Somali's or analysing my mind. OG. GIRL, My dear, as I stated in the beginning I meant to insult no one, just give my points of view regarding what I saw. I don’t mind the malls but I do mind the one way trade. Arab money goes to the west. The west needs oil, but no one needs Nike and Prada. These people are killing Iraq’s and Palestinians. Or is it like this “Oh I hate America look what they are doing to the poor children, they give me such a headache, lets go to Starbucks I need coffee†?

Somali NGO Says Tsunami Damage Worse Than Reported - Wednesday, January 05, 2005 at 06:40 De Capua interview De Capua interview Listen to De Capua interview The head of a Somali NGO says media reports have underestimated the number of dead and displaced in Somalia following last week’s tsunami. And he says much of the country’s fishing industry has been destroyed. United Nations and transitional Somali government officials continue their assessment of the country and hope to have a final report this week. However, the president of the Somali Fisheries Society, Dr. Musse Gabobe Hassan, says reports he’s receiving from within Somalia paint a bleak picture. He told English to Africa reporter Joe De Capua that reports he’s receiving through e-mail and phone calls say as many as 200 are dead, 500,000 homeless, and about 500 fishing boats destroyed. He says most of Somalia’s population lives along the coast. He says many fishermen are now afraid to venture back out to sea. He says the country’s fishing industry has been growing over the last 15 years because war and drought have hurt agriculture. Source: VAOnews.com

UN launches Somali tsunami appeal - Wednesday, January 05, 2005 at 06:42 The United Nations has launched an appeal for 54,000 Somalis it says were affected by the Indian Ocean tsunami. Somalia's north-east Puntland coastline was the worst hit About 150 Somalis are estimated to have died in the disaster, most of them fishermen from the semi-independent region of Puntland. The giant waves hit at the height of the area's fishing season, when the population of coastal villages is much larger than usual. The UN now says that at least $13m is urgently needed and this could rise. Along the north-eastern coast a large number of shelters, fishing boats and equipment is lost or damaged and wells have been washed away. Difficulties Relief workers have been trying to distribute immediate aid, such as food and clean water, to survivors. But they say they are finding it difficult to reach a number of areas because some of the road tracks have become impassable and the main bridge which connects the Hafun peninsula to the Somali mainland has been washed away. The presence of large numbers of anti-aircraft guns owned by local warlords is also said to be preventing a proper assessment of the damage. AFRICA: DEATH TOLL Somalia: 150 Tanzania: 10 Kenya: 1 Seychelles: 1 At-a-glance: Countries hit US and German soldiers, based in neighbouring Djibouti, have been helping aid agencies in Somalia to get fresh water and other supplies to survivors of the tsunami disaster. Some 270 tons of food have already been distributed. A BBC reporter says the situation is gradually improving, despite reports of cholera a week after the tragedy. Somali Prime Minister Ali Mohammed Ghedi was due to visit the affected region at the weekend, on his first trip to Somalia since his appointment from exile in Kenya. However, his visit was postponed and he is now sending a delegation later in the week.

China provides donation to tsunami-hit Somalia - Wednesday, January 05, 2005 at 06:39 NAIROBI, Jan. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- The Chinese government has provideda grant of 100,000 US dollars to the Somali transitional federal government as emergency assistance for disaster relief in the Hornof Africa country hit hard by tsunami. The donation was handed on Tuesday by Guo Chongli, China's ambassador to Kenya, to Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, president of the transitional federal republic of Somalia, who is based in Kenya's capital Nairobi and preparing to go back to his war-torn country. Yusuf said he had received the message of sympathy from ChinesePresident Hu Jintao, which is the first of its kind after Somalia was badly affected by the tsunami. "We express our sincerest thanks to the Chinese government and the president himself," Yusuf said, adding that he hopes the long-time friendly relations between the two countries will continue. "China is also the first country to donate money to us. A friend in need is a friend indeed. The Somali people will never forget that China always provides timely assistance whenever Somalia faces difficulties," said Yusuf. The Somali president reaffirmed Somalia's strong support for the one-China policy, saying there is only one China existing in the world and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. "Somalia will never change its principled stance on this matter," said Yusuf. For his part, the ambassador extended condolence of the Chinesegovernment and people to Somalia, which is worst affected by tsunami in Africa. "We hope the donation will help the affected Somali people overcome difficulties and rebuild their home soon," said Guo. Up to 200 Somalis were killed and many more are missing after the tsunami disaster. The efforts to assess the full extent of thedamage are being hampered by the poor transport and communication networks, which also affect the delivery of emergency relief. The tidal waves struck the Somali coast late December as the effect of a series of strong undersea Sumatra earthquakes hit the east African coast. The earthquake, measuring at 8.7 on the Richter Scale, was registered on Dec. 26, 2004, west of the island of Sumatra, triggering tsunamis, or tidal waves, in south and southeast Asia. At least 160,000 people in Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Maldives, Thailand and Malaysia have been killed in the disaster. Source: Xinhuanet.com

““Is that only what u saw there, nothing else? No Masjids, no Islamic Schools, No UAE traditional centres??!! You didnt turn to any Islamic radio stations?!! You didnt open any Islamic programs in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah,DXB Channels??! “ I spent three weeks there. Yes there were many Mosques and like I said hearing the Adan clearly every prayer time was refreshing. However it was a disappointment to find Zarah’s, M&S and Starbucks in every shopping centre. The place could be mistaken for Oxford Street in central London. NGOON. What are you on about? As for inferiority complex brother I am a proud Somali descendent of warrior poets and I hold a British passport, you know how that goes down in Dubai. Yes my experience was bitter. How can the Arabs be so blind? While bombs rain in Falujah, they are empowering Uncle Sam by buying his coffee, driving his cars, employing his architects and wearing his denim jeans. The Japanese take western products and make it their own, thus without natural resources they can compete on a level with the west. The Arabs on the other hand never lose an opportunity to lose an opportunity. As for putting everyone else down, I never insulted anyone it was just what I observed. Dubai has outsourced everything to outsiders thus being forever dependent on them. Is this healthy for their long term progress? Can the UAE as a whole afford to give nationality to the Indians, and if not can it survive without them, or keep them in limbo forever? Now how many local Architects designed these beautiful buildings, how many local engineers work on them? Let me ask you a question how many Arab brands are sold in the west and Shisha is not one? Dubai, Dubai big city of dreams but everything in Dubai aint always what it seems...
-
So true. I felt real bad because living in the UK you dont hear the Adan much. In Dubai I heard the Adan for each prayer time. It makes the mind more focused, then you see billboards and posters in the shopping mall of half naked men and women and you think am I the only one seeing this?

Welcome back Ayoub bro. But tell us what you mean by free speech is it the one you denounce unity and gig up your clan area? Or is it a new one you have learned lately. -
I do not mean to insult nor, flatter the Arabs so please let me add some points regarding Dubai. I visited it in the summer of 2004, and I was amazed. Not just by its artificial beauty but how much it has transformed itself into a US colony. Every where I went I was confronted by the Americanisation of Arabia. Mcdonalds, KFC, Starbucks children in the shopping centres humming 50 cent’s latest song. In Jumaira beach you could hear the call to prayer and see young locals getting ready to hit nightclubs. While the local women covered up, you had westerners from mother Russai swimming in their bikinis. The place was making me dizzy, the Indian workers were treated like dirt, Muslim or Hindu they were serves. The local population had great power over their workers and one saw smiling and joyful Arab families with a sad faced Asian worker holding their children and laging behind. The Indians worked hard in 45 degrees, planting pitiful palm trees in the highways, while the locals and tourist like me napped the mid day heat away. There is a clear hierarchy, the Indians and Africans are at the bottom, the Arabs in the middle with the western passport holders specially the whites at the top. The Taxi drivers, shop and house keeper’s fell to the first group. The Arabs drove nice cars and the whites were their consultants and advisors who's companies took a nice slice of the overall pie. I remember seeing all these new buildings, but most were being advertised for western tourist to purchase, one estate agent pointed out to me that David Beckham bought a holiday home in Dubai as, if I gave a damn where that old Man U fart lived. Turn on the Radio and one find’s a number of western Radio stations playing all the latest R&B, Hip-Hop and other western sounds. The DJ’s all had distinct Arab-American accents and would play, Ahmed in Jordan’s favourite Rap song and the dedication for Sara in Beirut. The TV was much the same, my cousin pointed out all her favourite soaps on channel Abu Dhabi, one could not help notice that all of them were Mexican or Spanish serious dubbed in Arabic. They had so many music channels, first time I ever saw Arab music that had an uncanny resemblance to Rap songs shown on MTV. There is great change happening there, and there seems to be a race underway in building ever newer highways and hotels, but what about the people, how will this change affect their culture and religion? I even heard there were many prostitutes and brothels and some told me they knew Somali girls who where selling their bodies in Dubai. I, left thinking that Somalia might be poor, but Dubai was nothing to envy, the only real thing in that place was the heat…
