Kenya, Somalia to sign economic cooperation pact Posted to the Web Feb 17, 16:12 Nairobi, Kenya.-- Kenya and Somalia are fine-tuning an economic cooperation strategy which is expected to culminate in the creation of a joint commission to explore areas of advancing economic development in the Horn of Africa nation, officials said here on Tuesday. Kenyan Foreign Minister Chirau Ali Mwakwere said during talks with Somali Prime Minister Ali Mohammed Ghedi that the joint ministerial commission is expected to meet soon to push forward the economic cooperation agenda. The economic cooperating agreement will spell various sectors in which the Kenyan government would help the Somalia authorities to get back on their knees after a 14-year period of strife. "We are working on a joint cooperation strategy to advance our economic development," Mwakwere told journalists after a closed- door meeting with the Somalia premier. Kenyan officials believe Somalia has a viable economic potential in livestock, fisheries sectors and has a very vibrant telecommunication industry which has continued to thrive despite the 14-year civil war which has rocked the nation. Somalia also enjoys a vibrant aviation industry boosted by the 50,000 US dollars a day "khat" trade between the two nations and the 14 daily flights from Mogadishu to Kenya which are being conducted through the Nairobi-based Kenya Civil Aviation Authority. Kenyan aviation authorities are expected to help Mogadishu re- establish their airspace safety in the meantime when the UN civil aviation arm, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), which degated the job to KCAA, reverts the job to Mogadishu. Ghedi said his country needed the support of all nations to enable it get back on its feet, saying after 14 years of destruction, the country was ready for reconstruction. "We need support of all other nations in order to serve our people as a government and start the contruction. SOMALIA: Ministers to explain new government policies in regions Posted to the Web Feb 16, 22:47 NAIROBI:- At least 40 members of Somalia's interim government left the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, on Wednesday for various regions of Somalia to explain the new government's policies to the public, an official in Prime Minister Ali Mohammed Gedi's office said. The delegations, made up of five teams of ministers and members of parliament, were due to visit regions in southern and central Somalia. "Teams comprising seven to eight ministers and MPs will visit the regions of Bay, Bakol, Hiran, Middle Shabelle, Galagadud and Mudug," Abdurrahman Ali "Malaysia", the special adviser to Gedi, told IRIN on Wednesday. The teams will spend five days "explaining government policies and establishing a presence" in those regions, he said. "Upon their return, they will report back on their impressions of what they have seen in the respective regions," he added. The trip is the latest indicator that momentum is building up for the Kenya-based Somali government to return home. It is the first "bold" trip for the new government to venture into the regions, according to a Somali political source. "Some of these regions have not had any contact with any form of authority" since the fall of President Muhammad Siyad Barre in 1991. "It is basically a wild west out there," the source said. On 6 February, 50 MPs of the 275-strong Parliament left Nairobi for the Somali capital, Mogadishu, to join another 30 who arrived in the city on 3 February. The second group of parliamentarians, led by Speaker Sharif Hassan Shaykh Aden, included some cabinet ministers. They received a rousing welcome from the public and a show of support from militiamen allied to the country's faction leaders, according to eyewitnesses. The MPs' trip to Mogadishu was also part of preparations for the return of the government to Somalia. The Somali political source said if this latest trip succeeds, it would greatly advance government plans for relocation. Ali said the ministers and MPs were also due to visit their native regions. Gedi will "most likely be in Mogadishu by the end of this week", Ali added. Cadaado lol, it's a pipe dream without south Mudug. I belive its in the inteerst of Puntland and the clans of Galgaduud/Mudug to have a united Galkacyu that would mean bringing on board the powerful clan of south Mudug. This is more important from an economic and political stance than incorporating Abudwaq and its two other villages. Galkacyu would develop to rival even Mogadishu being at the centre of the country and a bridge between the south and North of Somalia. Hobyo, Garacad, Galinsoor and Cadaado would benefit. Trade and commerce would thrive and it would go along way to end suspecion and clan animosity. So if Puntland should expand let it be a natural expansion and not just based on clan. The Abudwaaq and Cadaado is not as important as accomodating south Mudug and uniting Galkacyu.
