I think when talking about the Somali Language we need to be objective and set things in perspective. For instance we need to distinguish between colloquial Somali and formal and standard Somali. if you want to learn and understand formal and standard Somali refer to textbooks, television programmes and newspaper articles, unfortunately many of the words that so often find themselves in our daily communications are not standard Somali but rather ‘street’ ,’slang’ or colloquial Somali. These days you find many people whose Somali language credential are questionable presenting their own substandard way of speaking the Somali language as the correct way to speak Somali. Many of the Somali films made in North America can’t be considered serious as they use slang in their dialogue. Also sometimes when you watch people being interviewed on Somali television (Universal) you see just how poor peoples Somali is. Just because the majority of Somali people speak colloquial Somali doesn’t mean it the right way to speak Somali. Unfortunately those who are learning in Somali are learning from people who have a poor grasp of the Somali language. - notice how she adds 'o' at the end of every sentence! if she learnt proper somali she wouldn't speak like this! - So impressive, formal and standard somali. I think its a well established truth that divorce is rampant amongst the Somali community in the diaspora. Rather than finding excuses for divorce, we should instead be looking to find solutions to this epidemic. I think from what I have seen there are a number of reasons for the increase in divorce rates. 1. Societal pressures for women to get married as soon as possible. 2. Lack of companionship and mutual respect between the husband and the wife. 3. Men losing their roles as bread-winners. 4. The emancipation of women and the creation of opportunities. 5. Turning away from Islam and people becoming more western and liberal. 7. Marriage being no longer a sacred institution that should be protected 8. External forces seeking to destroy the family (extended families esp. Mothers in Law from the woman side) 9. No patience and trying to work things out 10. Divorce becoming common and a viable soultion to end a have decent marriage. 11. Extra-matiral affairs There might more that I have missed out. This is just stretching the surface, I am sure there more reasons.

I hear some family members are involved in planning organised and well co-ordinated attacks when 60 years old ladies collect their hagbad monies. If I was an MP, I would not just claim expenses for regular things like a second home even though I would probably serve in London, but also make sure that my family and friends benefit greatly too. How do you cope with people taking advantage of your good manners and respect towards them? I have been advised to be ''tough skinned'' and ''stand your ground’’ but being the nice person that I am doesn't allow me to be like that. This is a common problem in our community and it always inadvertently happens to people who are polite and have manners but who some mistake for weakness and someone they can advantage of. Perhaps my cyber brothers and sisters can advise me!
