  1. Islamicly aren't you [men] supposed to cover from navel to the knee? Just wondering what the fuss is all about, they seem well covered for what they are about to do - go play a sport.
  2. ^ Pineal gland exists; it is what allows you to distinguish night and day aka diurnal rhythm.

The manual work, meanwhile, is left to the women and the dependants. The Somali is a Mussulman of the Shujai sect and is very religious in his own fashion. In appearance the Somali is an Arab, and sometimes a hand-some Arab. Treat him with confidence and consideration, he is cheerful, intelligent, willing to learn, and true to his code of honesty. Treat him harshly or unjustly, he becomes sulky, obstinate, mutinous, and dangerous. He is an excellent scout, a wonderful marcher, and very proud if confidence is shown in him. It would be fatal to the peace of the country if the Somali should be treated with that contempt which is often shown to the black races by Europeans." If this guy is to be believed, then God help all Somalis, LMAO.
  5. STFU and take it like a real Somali....is what I learnt. I have had 1000x more opportunities than both my parents combined and I've hardly seen them complain as life threw stuff at them, but I complain 1,000,000x more than them in my bubbly middle-class existence.... Perhaps true for many of us on SOL who are really privileged in many ways...
  6. Masha Allah - these young men and women are inspirational and deserve a prize of some sort. May Allah bless the work of their hands in this world and in the hereafter.
  7. ^^ Counties, not states. Garissa rocks!

  11. Kassim Mohamed did a very good investigative piece on superpower and how they run Islii: http://www.the-star.co.ke/news/article-35736/how-notorious-criminal-gangs-rule-eastleigh I see nothing new in this thread; as Somalis we have normalized violence, from Somalia to Islii to Qurbaha....
  12. Alpha Blondy;974123 wrote: the arts should be accessible to all not just a few expats, NGO workers and elite Qurbo-joogians. Somaliland literature has for far too long been championed by Qurbo-Joogian apologists, whose chronic paternalism has not only completely alienated readers but neutered and emasculated Somaliland based authors. HIBF works with a patronising ‘internationalist’ foggy tokenism, promoting international authors or Qurbo-Joogian authors, whose musings and civilising mission undertones lack context or indeed relevance to the realities on the ground, to the detriment of Somaliland based authors. conscious cultural critics like myself value grass-roots, organically inspired cultural products, products grounded in real life experiences and not some pre-judged culturally distant stereotype informed by the overarching Qurbo-Joogian romanticist mindset. this mindset not only hijacks Somaliland cultural and literary products for its own ends but more significantly constructs a condescending, cultural straight jacket and stereotypical concoctions to self-aggrandising audiences. this dominant milieu or the prevailing Qurbo-Joogian romanticist mindset is the dominant ideology that inhibits Somaliland-based literature from the mainstream, at least here in the nation's capital. what i'm proposing here, in my capacity as a conscious cultural critic, is a 'back to basics' approach, bringing alternative and seldom documented experiences into the cultural mainstream; with the intention of shining a light with the aim of uncovering, and authentically documenting, hard to reach cultures and sub-cultures that exist in the Somali-speaking world and in particular Somaliland. these voices should be organically sourced from their own communities (instead of being white, English speaking, off a Qurbo-Joogian romanticist mindset), given the tools and the encouragement to write books based on their experiences and values rather than having a romanticist Qurbo-Joogian ethno-centric culturally biased world-view forced upon them. the most important point is to realise that this romanticist Qurbo-Joogian ethno-centric culturally abusive milieu is the number one impediment to Somaliland authors and readers alike. Any one know how Nadifa's new book is inaar? have you read it Can't believe I missed HIBF this year, so sad, I was so looking forward to joining fellow saad moses....
  13. Why not simply exercise self-discipline and control what you say?
  14. Beautiful - I like his "I don't give a toss" dressing. I think what he's playing is called a synthesizer...it allows you to mix your own beats with some stock background beats programmed into it. I did a bit of music in high school. Piano ma ahan. Organ is the big one in the churches...

Bantu this bantu that; I'd rather a bantu than a foul-mouthed Somali like you.

But the big blame lies with the inept Kenyan government who appear to have been caught sleeping on the job and will now lose a sizeable chunk of change. I hope coffee is banned next, its mild high has caused endless damage to society and is really no different to khat: Khat consumption induces mild euphoria and excitement, similar to that conferred by strong coffee Good riddance to Qat; it has ruined many a Somali family. They should ban it in ALL countries including in the Horn, not just in the UK.
  18. Ahmed Gurey was a Turk; simple history. Somalis formed the rank and file of the infantry...but leadership was provided by this Turk in the name of Islam.
  19. If poverty explains everything, why did Imaan marry 1) an African American (has a child with him) and then 2) David Bowie (another child). Last I checked Imaan is far far from poor... Leave the women alone; we don't have exclusive rights to them just because we are Somali men...

Very true, some speak all 3 languages fluently - simple framework for understanding that is Somali clan migrations, who they came in contact with as they moved, who they settled with etc. The longfeet and in Kenya for instance are much much closer in many regards (especially and) than each of them are to their respective relatives back in Ethiopia....I have even seen entire jilibs of these 3 clans claiming to be one of the other interchangeably kkk
  23. Daqane;964155 wrote: Really then why is the sole dagoodi member of the SFG parliament on the HAG parliamentary list? Very simple answer - HAG has, over the decades/centuries, absorbed other relatives into its ranks; not just genealogy - pure HAGs are a nucleus of well-known clans and camel () lovers () and Beledweyne () peeps () are not genealogically HAG for instance. Another good example are the peeps (qaal) who joined HAG in 1991... The in Kenya don't self-identify as HAG; those across the border have joined their abtis. Clear? If not PM me...
