God forbid!

  3. By Patrick Cockburn in Fallujah 09 January 2004 Nine people were killed when an American Black Hawk helicopter was shot down and crashed yesterday near the town of Fallujah, west of Baghdad just hours after a US military cargo jet came under missile fire over capital. Both incidents underline that US forces in Iraq are still suffering significant losses despite the capture of Saddam Hussein last month. A US military spokeswoman said: "A helicopter made an emergency landing near Fallujah. There were four passengers and four crew members on board and there are no survivors." She said she did not know if the helicopter had been hit by ground fire, and that it was on a medical evacuation mission when it came down. Iraqi witnesses said the helicopter, which was marked with a red cross and flying in formation with a second Black Hawk, was brought down by hostile fire. The Pentagon said the transport plane which had to make an emergency landing came under hostile fire. A few hours earlier, six mortar rounds exploded at a US army base, also just west of Baghdad, killing one soldier and wounding 34. The mortars, often used by the resistance, hit the sleeping quarters at Logistical Base Seitz. The US army has been trying to bring down its casualties in Iraq after heavy losses in November. The number of US army patrols was cut from 1,500 a day in November to 500 a day in December. Checkpoints are mainly manned by Iraqi police. While yesterday's attacks were taking place, a goodwill gesture by Paul Bremer, the chief US administrator in Iraq, was coming unstuck. Mr Bremer had announced on Wednesday that 506 of the 12,800 Iraqis detained by the US would be released over the next few weeks, starting with 100 yesterday from the vast Abu Ghraib prison near Fallujah. Relatives and friends of prisoners started gathering from 8am yesterday 200 yards from the main gate of Abu Ghraib. Rumours spread regularly that the release of prisoners was imminent. Hamid Obeid, whose brother Khalid was detained on 27 July, said: "First they told us it would be 10am, then 2pm, then 4pm." He said he had not seen his brother, a mukhtar (district leader), since he was arrested and did not know why he had been detained. Many of the family members gathered outside Abu Ghraib agreed that they did not know the reasons for the arrests. Jamal, who spoke English and said he had a degree in civil engineering from Manchester University, claimed his brother Salah had been detained because neighbours with whom he was in dispute had "denounced him to the Americans as a terrorist". Only three of the Iraqis detained have been brought to trial. As the hours passed with no releases it became clear that Mr Bremer's conciliatory gesture was becoming counter-effective. "I don't trust Americans. They are making more enemies for themselves now by arresting innocent people," said Jassim Rasheed. One man was shouting: "If the Americans do not release my cousin I will kill one of them." The explanation for the failure of any released prisoners to appear finally emerged. Mr Bremer's office had failed to tell the US 800th Military Police Brigade, in charge of prisons in Iraq, to free any prisoners. The release of those detained without trial has been a prime demand of Iraqi leaders. Adnan Pachachi, the head of the interim Iraqi Governing Council, had promised mass releases starting yesterday. But the cumbersome bureaucracy of Mr Bremer's administration seems to have ensured that his conciliatory action will do the US no good with Iraqis. Takbir!

  14. My Path to Islam Let me give you the general picture: I am 'white middle class' and about to turn 50. (More likely, I already have by the time you are reading this.) I went through all the typical white-middle-class nonsense. I worked for the big corporation. I climbed up the ranks. I started as a computer operator, went through the promotions. Systems tech. Programmer. Systems programmer. Manager over a tech support department. And so on. House in the fancy suburb, bought my wife a Volvo, all that kind of thing. Eventually I went out freelance, independent computer work. Owned my own company. Hit my 40's, got divorced, chased women, drank a lot, chased more women, did drugs, did more drugs. Did the wrong drug. Found myself spending much more effort trying to do cocaine than trying to do the work Allah gave me the talent for. Found myself eventually in jail, of course. But Allah is merciful. He had His plan. That jail, a state jail, was more than a county lock-up, but less than the stereotypical "Hollywood" prison. No riots, no tear gas, no beatings (well... I did see two incidents, but let's not digress). But the company in jail is not the most righteous, even for a junior criminal like me. I certainly don't recommend it as a vacation spot for anyone... for one thing the help is really rude. Anyway, I had noticed that there was one group in there that DIDN'T seem to be out to prove themselves tougher, who weren't busy trying to run one scheme or another, who seemed to be *unshackled* by the dark environment we were in. That group, you might guess, was the black Muslims. And even that, I later learned, was an assumption on my part. Some of the brothers were Black Muslims (Nation of Islam) I would later learn, but most were Muslims associated with Mosques that (generally) joined W. Dean Mohammad when he led the bulk of the old N.O.I. away from Louis Farrakhan and his bunch and back to orthodox Islam. This was good, and one of the signs of Allah's planning. Because one day one of my black cellmates was in the same visiting area with his family when I was visited by my wife. My wife is black. And word of this got back to the rest of the inmates in my area. Naturally some of the bigoted whites thereafter treated me with disdain; no loss as they were not the sort I associated with. But on the other side of the race line my own aloof attitude had (unknown to me) been interpreted as prejudice by some of my non-white cellmates. Suddenly it was seen that that wasn't my stance. Getting to the point, this all led to my being invited to an Islamic learning session. (Here in the U.S. prisons have to accommodate the faiths of the inmates, within limits) A chance to get out of the block for a couple of hours? (And some curiousity.) I went. They called azaan and then one of the brothers with a good voice recited al-Fatiha.It was like nothing I can explain. The Southern Baptists talk about being "born again" Brothers, sisters: is that the right word! I cried like a baby. There in the middle of a room full of felons. Tears streaming down my face. Not one of them ever mentioned that to me. To the best of my knowledge it was never mentioned outside of that room (and stories like that spread faster than fire in there). I had $110,000 in a retirement account when all of this started. When I got out of jail I had $4,000 left in the bank, and a felony conviction. I had lost $106,000 but I had gained Islam. I would pay twice that without blinking. I do not need anyone else's affirmation of my Islam, I have received that from the ONE who matters! (By the way, for anyone who wants to verify, the legal facts I related above are a matter of public record in the State of Texas.) Oh, that $4,000? Just as it was running out, I ran into an old boss (who knew my troubles) in Wal-mart. He hired me two days later. Alhamdulallah once again! G. Waleed Kavalec "Invite all to the way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; And consult with them in ways that are best and most gracious." (Al Qur'an, 16:125
  15. Well stories of marriage break-ups due to qabyalad is not un-common. It really depends on the individuals who are looking to wed-lock. We are encouraged to go for ppl from good family backgrounds ie well known to yr own family, which often means same tribe/extended fam freind or close.

  17. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3376769.stm do we? i certainly dont,
  18. I think we here on SOL are mature enough with relevant experience to know that ppl are differednt, doesnt matter what tribe u are, the guy closest to u (tribe0wise) can be scheming against you. I think it is inportant to be able to recognise good and bad ppl or else we shall all be lost. Knowing yr qabil is a good thing in terms of knowing where yr from, yr family tree, yr parents tree, yr cousins tree, yr freinds tree, this is just somalinimo, it our culture, heritage etc etc. We all have freinds/family from all sides. However i have noticed that often the ones using qabil in a negative lately are the younger 'fish' boys and girls, especially in London. All the more reason as to why we need to educate those who have been misinformed/influenced/under-educated in terms of somali clan culture,,,,,, nice topic
  19. managed to catch the 2nd half, very entertaining, yr Roma looked very ordinary, maybe an off game, but u may aswell lose to Milan of all team ey, i have told u plenty of time b4 that Totti is not a BIG game player, let him practice on the lesser teams , yr boy mancini was awful, maybe he had jet lag, Its all about the prem tonight tho, Lpool vs Chelsea live,,,,,,no prediction tho, i think we all know why
