  1. Saxib I get what you mean. The problem is, how did they get a growth rate when there is no information on population in Somalia (no census etc) and the current population is only an estimate? There have been wars, famine and migration to also consider. It just doesn't add up.
  2. Then there is basis for Iran but for them to say Somalia is estimated at 10m and will be 27m is just silly. Problem with such reports is that they make headline news without much scrutiny.
  3. These reports tend to be baseless scare mongering to legislate for more 'help' through dodgy NGOs/UN. How is Somalia going to go from 10m to 27m in 37 years? Sad thing they will get Africans to try and sell this to Africa.
  4. Alpha, you're best placed as I know you know what is going on. Sheeg dee.
  5. Any update on this reer Hargaisa? Rumours that ET say the runway isn't adequate.
  6. http://rethink911.org/ Never really bought the official line.
  7. ^Singapore and Hong Kong are hundreds of years old (developed as colonial outposts/trade routes). Dubai is just over 40 and has caught and surpassed them in many areas.
  8. Andy Townsend I owned a 4s for a month then took it back.
  9. DXB went from 2nd world city to surpass many cities in the west on many levels in the space of 10 years! Great city.
  10. The most overated phone on the market.
  11. The information filtering through is that Genel made the decision to ‘evacuate’ it’s staff. This was taken unilaterally with no consultation with the Somaliland government. It is rumoured that one of the reasons for this sudden move out of the country could be an internal dispute between Genel and those it subcontracted to do the exploration. The government has sought clarification from Genel and the issue of political influence from outside hasn’t been ruled out. This has nothing to do with the locals or any perceived lack of agreement with them. Agreements were made with the locals in June and July. Everything was going according to plan with the camp set up, people moving out there, deliveries of water and diesel starting last week. I’m sure we will hear more soon.

For a layman it would seem like a typical road construction that is just in need of tar, asphalt and labour. Perhaps my question is better worded: what are the differences between a runway and a typical major road? A runway is made of a high volume of concrete with steel reinforcement (very expensive). Road is compacted earth with asphalt (no so expensive).
  13. ^Quite true. They should have concentrated on Berbera which is a gem in the whole region but unfortunately feasability studies are not something we care much about. I actually learned of a proposal from a wealthy UAE business man for the government to consider making Berbera a cargo hub. They said they would get back to him (about 2 years ago) nuune;976144 wrote: ^ Norf , for 737-800, ET is right not fully loading the aircraft, as fully loaded plane requires minimum of 2.98km, with 45m wide runway, I suppose the issue was not about the width of the runway, but the length of the runway which if it is 2.5km is a real shame. It needs great technique in taking off with 2.5km, but some airports like short one's located in the sea or highly populated areas, 2.5km achievable but with care each time. Shorter runways mean less rooms for mistakes and higher risk when landing/taking off yes but this means only a jumbo weighing half the weight can land. Defeats the purpose no? Reer Hargaisa should confirm after their siesta
  14. What is this about ET purposfully not fully loading the plane due to the short runway (2.4km)? Please advise reer Hargaisa. Nuune, what is the min runway stretch required for a 737/a320?
