Santa Clara Man Accused Of Stealing $9M From Work here Federal agents are on the hunt for a former California Water Services Company employee, accused of stealing $9 million from his employer. Authorities believe he may have fled the country. According to court records, Abdirahman Ismail Abdi quit his job as an auditor at the company's San Jose headquarters on April 27th, but a janitor spotted him returning that night. Investigators say Abdi took two former co-workers computers to wire more than $9 million from the company to his bank account in Qatar. Authorities were able to block the transfers and were able to recover the money back. Investigators say the 32-year-old put his wife and two kids on a plane to Germany the following day. A week later, investigators say he activated a cell phone in British Columbia, Canada. Police have searched his Santa Clara apartment for clues. No one was home Wednesday night as a late rent notice hung on the front door. Abdi is not a U.S. citizen and in fact was deported back to Somalia in 2005. He has been charged with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
  3. Sick people. http://www.salon.com /politics/war_room/2 004/07/15/hersh/inde x.html After Donald Rumsfeld testified on the Hill about Abu Ghraib in May, there was talk of more photos and video in the Pentagon's custody more horrific than anything made public so far. "If these are released to the public, obviously it's going to make matters worse," Rumsfeld said. Since then, the Washington Post has disclosed some new details and images of abuse at the prison. But if Seymour Hersh is right, it all gets much worse. Hersh gave a speech last week to the ACLU making the charge that children were sodomized in front of women in the prison, and the Pentagon has tape of it. The speech was first reported in a New York Sun story last week, which was in turn posted on Jim Romenesko's media blog, and now EdCone.com and other blogs are linking to the video. We transcribed the critical section here (it starts at about 1:31:00 into the ACLU video.) At the start of the transcript here, you can see how Hersh was struggling over what he should say: "Debating about it, ummm ... Some of the worst things that happened you don't know about, okay? Videos, um, there are women there. Some of you may have read that they were passing letters out, communications out to their men. This is at Abu Ghraib ... The women were passing messages out saying 'Please come and kill me, because of what's happened' and basically what happened is that those women who were arrested with young boys, children in cases that have been recorded. The boys were sodomized with the cameras rolling. And the worst above all of that is the soundtrack of the boys shrieking that your government has. They are in total terror. It's going to come out." "It's impossible to say to yourself how did we get there? Who are we? Who are these people that sent us there? When I did My Lai I was very troubled like anybody in his right mind would be about what happened. I ended up in something I wrote saying in the end I said that the people who did the killing were as much victims as the people they killed because of the scars they had, I can tell you some of the personal stories by some of the people who were in these units witnessed this. I can also tell you written complaints were made to the highest officers and so we're dealing with a enormous massive amount of criminal wrongdoing that was covered up at the highest command out there and higher, and we have to get to it and we will. We will. You know there's enough out there, they can't (Applause). .... So it's going to be an interesting election year." Notes from a similar speech Hersh gave in Chicago in June were posted on Brad DeLong's blog. Rick Pearlstein, who watched the speech, wrote: "[Hersh] said that after he broke Abu Ghraib people are coming out of the woodwork to tell him this stuff. He said he had seen all the Abu Ghraib pictures. He said, 'You haven't begun to see evil...' then trailed off. He said, 'horrible things done to children of women prisoners, as the cameras run.' He looked frightened." So, there are several questions here: Has Hersh actually seen the video he described to the ACLU, and why hasn't he written about it yet? Will he be forced to elaborate in more public venues now that these two speeches are getting so much attention, at least in the blogosphere? And who else has seen the video, if it exists -- will journalists see and report on it? did senators see these images when they had their closed-door sessions with the Abu Ghraib evidence? -- and what is being done about it? (Update: A reader brought to our attention that the rape of boys at Abu Ghraib has been mentioned in some news accounts of the prisoner abuse evidence. The Telegraph and other news organizations described "a videotape, apparently made by US personnel, is said to show Iraqi guards raping young boys." The Guardian reported "formal statements by inmates published yesterday describe horrific treatment at the hands of guards, including the rape of a teenage Iraqi boy by an army translator.") ― Geraldine Sealey

UAE puts torture prince in shackles Tue, 12 May 2009 09:44:21 GMT Font size : Sheikh Issa bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the UAE has tortured a business partner. Emirati authorities have reportedly arrested the Abu Dhabi Prince who was caught on camera while sadistically torturing an Afghan man. The world reacted in horror to recently-exposed footage that showed Sheikh Issa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, son of the late UAE president and brother of the Abu Dhabi crown prince, ruthlessly torturing an Afghan grain dealer who had allegedly cheated in a business deal. The victim was beaten with wooden planks with nails protruding from them, after which the prince poured salt on his bleeding wounds. The video also shows the prince setting fire to the victim's genitals, giving him electric shocks with a cattle prod, ramming desert sand into his mouth, and firing bullets around him with an automatic rifle. The video caused uproar among human rights organizations and prompted Abu Dhabi prosecutors to detain Sheikh Issa on Tuesday to further investigate into the incident. According to a statement by the UAE Judicial Department, "all documents, related to the recently broadcast video, depicting the ill-treatment of an individual have been referred to the Abu Dhabi Public Prosecution Office." If the case goes to trial, it would be the first time that a member of the ruling family in the United Arab Emirates faces criminal charges in a court of law. Torture allegations against Sheikh Issa came to light a year ago when his former business associate, Bassam Nabulsi, sued the sheik for millions of dollars and submitted the video tapes to a US federal court in Houston. In his suit, Nabulsi also charged Issa and other members of the ruling family with false imprisonment and with torturing him in an attempt to get the tapes back after Nabulsi's business relations with Issa soured. The UAE, the world's third-largest oil exporter, has been grappling with its human rights image after facing severe criticism from humanitarian organizations. More than 80 percent of the UAE population consists of foreigners, most of whom come from the Indian subcontinent. A torrent of human rights reports have revealed that laborers are largely subjected to extreme conditions. Many are housed in shanty camps and are forced to work long hours in the scorching desert climate. Employers often retain their passports.

Allah Yarham walaal A poet once said: We are but guests with our families, Staying for a while, and leaving them. Wealth and families are but trusts. Inevitably, one day trusts will be recalled. The sons of this life will all part To meet together again in the hereafter.

  24. http://news.bbc.co.u k/1/hi/world/africa/ 8036367.stm A Kenyan fan of English football club Arsenal has hanged himself after his team's defeat by Manchester United. The north London club was beaten 3-1 in the European Champions League semi-final second leg on Tuesday evening. Suleiman Omondi, 29, who was watching in a bar in the capital, Nairobi, was incensed by the club's poor showing. He left at half-time after arguing with a Manchester United fan and was found hanging from a rope in his house, still dressed in an Arsenal shirt. 'Broke down' The BBC's Josphat Makori in Nairobi says the unprecedented incident has shocked football fans in Kenya. According to his friends, Mr Omondi was in good spirits at the beginning of the match and even when Arsenal conceded the first goal, he did not seem to be affected. He was so angry that he left in a rage Eyewitness But things changed when the team conceded a second goal 11 minutes into the game. A woman, who sat next to him in the bar, said Mr Omondi was so disappointed by Arsenal's poor performance that he broke down during half-time. Another eyewitness told journalists that it was at this point that a Manchester United fan started taunting him. "Suleiman got hold of him angrily by the neck and started pressing him so hard," he said. "We quickly intervened and asked him to stop. Suleiman then stopped but he was so angry that he left in a rage." His body was found on Wednesday morning. Police officer David Bunei told the BBC the incident was being investigated.
