  10. The Awakened SSC People LASANOD ONLINE:- Wearing sky blue costumes adorned with a star, the people of Sool, Sanaag & Cayn (SSC) regions have been holding endless meetings and conferences around the world over the past couple of months. The sky blue gowns, headbands, and T-shirts, are a collective tribute to the Somali national flag. Donning the flag of Somalia is also a clear message to show that SSC regions are not part of any secession whatsoever. The main point of these meetings is to regain control of the SSC regions. These meetings are being held in many urban cities like Minneapolis, London, Nashville, Nairobi, etc. Causes that have lead SSC regions into the present status quo are being discussed. The atmosphere is gratifying since participants are showing optimal eagerness to rebuild the SSC regions. SSC expatriates around the world are also giving their support and endorsement to the ongoing SSC traditional leaders’ assembly in Burowadal, Somalia. The dignity of other fellow Somalia, even those who are unlawfully controlling the city of Laascaanood, is respected in the conversations. Heated debates are ongoing, but people are just. They act as though they were in full compliance with the Koranic verse: “And let not the hatred of a people degrade you into being unjust. Be just, for its closest piety.” (V: 8) However, in spite of the amount of tolerance and the attempt at being fair, the gravity of the situation inevitably surfaces. What is bothersome is that SSC regions are controlled by others. The city of Laascaanood was growing before it was conquered by militias from Hargeisa. The economy of the city has since nose-dived as if the city was under an economic embargo. Moreover, all traditional leaders of the SSC are living in exile today. These discouraging conditions and others are why many SSC people are biting their lower lip. In response to such challenges, it became necessary that appropriate actions need to be performed. Thus far, the promising thing is that most SSC people understand these problems and thus are willing to be involved in dealing with them. Another progress is that the SSC people are putting their differences aside and are uniting for regaining control of their land. SSC people are shining and are getting the word out in plausible ways. During breaks of the above mentioned conferences, for example, young men and women are hitting the stage and performing Somali folklore dances such as Jaandheer, which is popular in SSC regions. They are singing and reading patriotic songs and poems to not only entertain but to motivate the audience. The message is clear, “SSC regions are part of Somalia.” The granddaughter of the Somali acclaimed legendary poet, Ismail Mirre, seized the moment in a meeting which has been held in London. Following the footsteps of her grandfather, she wrote and read a heartwarming poem to her audience. Three fine lines of that poem are: Guryo kale ragaa roorayoon tooda garanaynin Rag ninkay gargaaraan iyaga gebi ka tuuraayo Midnimada dadkaa goobayaan cidi u garaabaynin In addition, Saado Ali, a popular artist, has recently released the hit song “Libdhi maysid Laascaanood.” This song, which is motivating the SSC to stand for reclaiming the Laascaanood city, has received many compliments from the most Somali speaking people. Saado, throughout her entire music career, is known for advocating the justice. Her justice promoting songs and shows cannot be misinterpreted. Now, she is singing the ‘Dal Qudha’ song which reads: Dakanadu ninkeeday mar kale doog ku noqotaaye Waxse digey ninkii yidhii war baa laga danbaysiine Miyaa lays dirqiyayaa ileen dookhu waa qarane Denbi kii ka galay waa danbaa loo deldelayaa Duniduna waxay noo taqaan waa dalkaa qudha e Soomaliya ninkii diidayaa magaca ha u daayo These songs and many others that will follow would be a part of the ongoing efforts indicating that the people of SSC are waking up. Awakening songs and poems are definitely needed to stimulate the people of SSC regions. Therefore, these folklore dances, songs, patriotic poems and blue colored costumes are the beginning of a struggle through which the people of SSC would shake off the shackles of the unjust. Theatrical and artistic messages are not the only weapons being used by the SSC people. Demonstrations have been recently held throughout the Cayn region, especially in Buhodle district. Thousands of people took to the streets; waved the blue sky Somali flag; chanted patriotic phrases; and supported the SSC traditional leaders meeting in Burowadal. The single strongest evidence showing that SSC are part of Somalia is that all SSC traditional leaders are clearly supporting the unity of Somalia. When Hargeisa invaded Laascaanood two years ago, all SSC traditional leaders fled to remote villages. They did so to prove that they are against secession smeared activities of Hargeisa in the SSC regions. They decided to come back to Laascaanood only when the city is liberated. That is what they are waiting for today. Now, the SSC traditional leaders are gathering in Burowadal village. While still peacefully calling Hargeisa to deploy its militias from the SSC regions, the goal of this conference is to create an independent local administration for SSC. However, Hargeisa turns a deaf ear to the SSC traditional leaders. Disrespecting the traditional leaders means disrespecting the entire SSC people. But the SSC people are paying a heed to their traditional leaders. So, a justified anger is incubating in the SSC people as far as Hargeisa militias are present in these regions. There has never been a day in which the SSC people are more unified and willing to restore their reputation. Their movement is not based on hatred but upon their will to fight against injustice. To do so, they prefer to utilize peaceful endeavors such as demonstrations and literature as well as diplomacy and peace initiatives. But, If Hargeisa doesn’t comply with what the SSC people are demanding, things would be different. This struggle has rolled its wheels. Therefore, there are two choices for Hargeisa to explore, one of which is to disturb the struggle. The other option is to leave the SSC regions alone. It seems that Hargeisa has the tendency to the latter one, but that would lead into a regional instability. Mohamed Hassan

  16. Sado Ali – A Beautiful Somali voice and advocacy of justice LASANOD ONLINE:- Thirty-five years ago Sado Ali Warsame joined Wabari, Somalia’s foremost music group that existed before the collapse of the central government of Somalia and today she is still indisputably one of the best and admired of her ensemble. Sado became a household icon in 1975 when she appeared on the stage dressed modestly and astonishingly beautiful with a romantic song called Cunaabi (amber), a song that up to the present time, is evocatively listened by millions of Somalis. Sado´s popularity is not only due to her magnificent voice, but her pro-unity stand, political courage and outspokenness against injustices make her renowned. Unlike many of her counterparts, and with out hidden agenda she objectively opposed the practices of Somalia’s last totalitarian regime in 1980:s and for this she had been jailed twice by the then NSS, a notorious secret service organ, existed in Somalia. The first time was when she had, through a poem criticised the brutal oppression against the people of the central and northwest regions of Somalia. The second time was in late 1980:s, when she sang a song called land cruiser. This song made her, an epitome of struggle against the injustices and corruption that prevailed in Somalia. As someone whose heart belongs to the well being of the Somali people her song depicts the huge gap between the lives of the ordinary people and that of the corrupted top echelon of the last Somali government who misused aid donations from donor countries. The message of the song was very clear as the words of the song painted how these corrupt officials went, with the donated funds, on expensive and brand-new glittering Toyota land cruisers, albeit the ordinary residents of the capital of the country had no water, electricity and other indispensable amenities. For the last week or so a new song by the name libdhi maysid Lascaanood (Lascaanood won’t vanish) by Sado Ali has been airing in the Somali musical world. The song is so absorbing not only for its touchy lyrics and pleasant music but its content is redolent and remindful of Somali nationalism and historical facts that had delivered the Somali independence. It similarly portrays the significance of Lascaanood as the cradle of the Dervish movement, the Somali struggle against the British rule. The song expresses that pro-unity SSC regions of Somalia and Lascaanood, which has been occupied in 2007 by a secessionist militia clan, called itself Somaliland would not be part of a pretend state. Although the song, Libdhi maysid Lascaanood has been welcomed and moved by almost of all Somalis, it has irked and became ants in the pants of those who want to dwarf and destroy the unity of our country, specially the so-called Somaliland politicians. This is the second time in less than a month that Sado´s appearance in the Somali media has been lambasted by the Somaliland authorities. Prior to the emergence of this song, Sado has participated in a Somali gathering in the US, where thousands of Somalis had to come in a show of support for a former Somali Vice President, Mohamed Ali Samatar, and one of the most respected personalities, Somalia ever had who has been accused of war crimes by some Somalis. The accusations against Samatar are familiar rehash of fabricated stories, driven by ultra motives of “Somaliland”, a clannish entity that has been relentlessly seeking international recognition for the last twenty years through all sorts of propaganda. Privy to the aim of those who accuse Mr Samatar, Sado stood up in the Somali gathering and once again has spoken powerfully and eloquently for justice, arguing that it was a hypocrisy to single out Mr Samatar for what had happened in Somalia while other members of the regime are protected in else where such as in Hargeisa, the capital city of “Somaliland”. Sado´s support for the former vice president and her new song, libdi maysid Lascaanood have obviously stirred up a hornet´s nest of the politicians in the so-called “Somaliland”. The politicians, there have been furious to the extend that militia’s interior minister, Mr Abdillahi Ciro warned his clan entity that Sado´s new song is to foment uprising in Lascaanood´s people against the presence of Somaliland militia. Another clannish hate-monger, Faisal Ali Warabe and the leader of UCID party in Somaliland threatened the people of SSC three days ago with war because of the song and on-going SSC people’s meetings aimed at liberating Lascaanood. But the paradox here is that while Sado Ali was the one, jailed in 1980:s by the NSS due to her opposition to the oppressive measures of the brutal regime against the people in northwest region of Somalia, these two hypocrites who hail from the northwest regions were part and parcel of the regime. Mr Abdilahi Ciro was an NSS officer in 1980:s, responsible for interrogating and torturing innocent people from the very entity of which its militia today is responsible for the ethnic cleansing, killing and jailing of SSC people. On the other hand it is not secret that Mr Warabe was an informer who collaborated with the regime during 1980:s for pecuniary reasons and he too was responsible for the imprisonment of innocent people from his own clan. No matter what such dissimulators say but the message of Sado´s song, Libdhi maysid Lascaanood decodes a crystal clear message from the SSC people and that is - the occupation of Lascaanood will not stand. Mohamed Ali Mirreh

Saado waxa ee u sheegasaa maamulka SNM ee xaruntiisu tahay Hargeysa ee Laascaanood dagaalka ku soo qaaday, hadana dhibaatada iyo cabudhinta kawa Laascaanood " Dulmi Diidow haa isku noqon Dulmi Doon, kii shalay lahaa reer kalaa na guumeesta iyo waa inaanu dhulkeena xoreenaa, inuu maanta gardaro iyo dagaal ku qaado gobolada jaarka ah" - - - - - - Saado Sings For Las Anod Buhodle.net Saado Ali Warsame Her name is Saado Ali Warsame. Born in the region of Cayn in Northern Somalia to a conservative nomadic family, she started singing at an early age to become the first singer from that part of the country whose inhabitants frowned upon such pursuits. Saado moved out of her nomadic roots to the city to become one of the best in her chosen profession. She is one of the few Somali singers who compose some of their own songs. Her songs range from romantic love to Somali Nationalism. Most people know her for political songs such as “Laand Karuusar Gado, Guuxisa Mood, Mood, Gob inaad ku tahay Geeska Africa”: “Buy a land Cruiser with donated aid. Let its sound make you believe that you are somebody in the Horn of Africa”. The song criticized the ruling junta for pilfering donations from Western Countries on expensive Toyota Land Cruisers for government officials and their families while the nation sank deeper into poverty and anarchy. She also sang to lament the dilapidated conditions of the only two five star hotels in Mogadishu which were mainly built with donations from the Somali people and eventually became meeting places for clan gatherings. The incompetent management allowed the hotels to deteriorate to less than 1 star edifices infested with bugs, cockroaches and rats. She first performed the song in a theatre full of the SRC members including the late Siad who became furious and almost incarcerated her. She also participated in a long running serial poem that started with the letter “D” and known to Somalis as the Deelley. Her participation focused on defending the people of the North against the practices of a brutal regime. After the collapse of the regime, Saado’s songs focused on appealing to the national identity of Somalis to rebuild their country and stop fighting. Her song “">Aan kuu Taliyo” is a master piece that describes the current situation of Somalia where politicians cannot agree on sharing power equitably. It is a hilarious song accompanied by an expressive body language by the singer. Saado recently stood up for the former Vice President of Somalia, Mohamed Ali Samatar, who has been accused of torture. Saado argued that it was unfair to single Samater out when other members of the regime are scattered all over the world. Saado is not a stranger to controversy and her latest song has generated a lot of debate in Somali circles. Many Somalis have welcomed its nationalistic lyrics, while a few have accused her of encouraging the people of Sool to revolt against the secessionist regime of Rayale, a former Colonel in the security apparatus of the collapsed Somali Regime. Some accuse Rayale of wanting to bolster his re-election chances with the costly and risky occupation of the city. ‘Libdhimeyside Laas Caanood, Laba maahaa Waddankeennu”, talks about the city of Laas Anod, the cradle of the Dervish Movement that fought against the British colonialists for more than 20 years and eventually succumbed to the first aerial bombardment in the history of Africa. The song’s title means “O Las Anod, you will always remain a part of Somalia, Our country is one”. The Rayale Regime invaded the city in October 2007 with the help of disgruntled politicians from the area such as Xaabsade who defected from Puntland when he lost his Ministerial Seat there after a long dispute with the then Puntland President Adde Muse. Ironically, the same Xaabsade chased Rayale from Las Anod a few years earlier when the former NSS colonel tried to visit the city uninvited. Saado extols the virtues of the city as a base for Somali Nationalism and warns its secessionist occupiers against dividing the Somali Nation. Her song prompted the Rayale Regime to attack her and accuse her of enticing violence. In a recent interview with Afnugal, a pro-Somaliland website, the Minister of Interior of Somaliland went as far as boasting that the residents of Las Anod are already under occupation and have no chance of rising up no matter what Saado sings. The leaders of Somaliland seem to have forgotten the destructive role that Hadrawi and other Somaliland singers and poets played in the destruction of Somalia. Hadrawi’s destructive role can be illustrated by a passage from his poem “Haddaanan Haddaanan” which encourages the northern clans to rise up against the regime: “Haddaanan haddaanan Haddaanan dhawaaqa Hireyda wireyda Hayaay ka kacayda Jahaadka Hargaysa Barbaartu hagayso Haweenka godoodey Ka qayb gelin hawsha” Hadrawi is a national figure who chose to participate in the uprising of his own clans against what he saw as oppression by a dictatorial regime. Similarly, Saado today believes that her birth place is under occupation by a dictatorial regime that wants to force a secessionist agenda on her own people. The irony of the matter is that Somalis do not learn from history. The actions of the Siad regime ignited an ugly civil war that destroyed our country. The actions of Rayale can ignite another destructive civil war that can engulf a stable area of Somalia that has escaped so far from the mayhem raging in the South of our country. The council of traditional leaders of the areas occupied by the secessionist regime is in a mood for confrontation and is gearing up for long conflict that is not in the interest of our country. They recently elected a council of war known as the Khusuusi, named after the inner war council of Sayid Mohamed, the leader of the Dervish Movement in Somalia. The mandate of the Council is to reclaim the city of Las Anod from the secessionist minded regime of Rayale by force if necessary. Let us hope that sanity will prevail so that we can avoid such a scenario. Let us hope that the elders of the western regions of Somalia can talk sense into the Rayale Regime so that it can withdraw its forces from an area whose inhabitants value Somali Unity and have a strong desire to remain part of the Federal Republic of Somalia. If such a conflict starts, there is a risk of it spreading to other parts of Somalia since the Unity of Somalia is the responsibility of all Somalis wherever they are. God forbid, this can eventually escalate to a war between two major geographical regions of the country. May be it is about time for the traditional leaders of the North to go back to the acacia tree where the Northern clans used to resolve their differences with the help of camel milk and Shax, Somali Chess. Maybe it is time for Hadrawi to atone for his past sins and compose a song for peace and have Saado sing it with her distinctive voice. Ali H. Abdulla
