Training to build the Somali army

 

ABU DHABI - The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has decided to end its training mission in Somalia to build the Somali army, which began in 2014.

 

This decision comes against the background of the incident of the detention of the Somali security authorities a private civil aircraft registered in the UAE on Sunday, April 8, 2018 at Mogadishu International Airport, with the elements of the UAE duty forces, and against the background of some security elements seized the funds allocated to support the Somali army and pay The salaries of Somali trainees.

 

The UAE and Somalia are linked by historical cooperation on the basis of mutual respect. The Emirati force of the UAE has carried out several training courses, thousands of them from Somalia

The UAE oversees the Puntland police force's anti-terrorism and piracy program. The UAE has contributed to raising the capacity of Somalia's security and military institutions, as well as supporting and strengthening counterterrorism efforts in cooperation with several international parties and AU forces in Somalia.

The Emirates sent a ship to pick up vehicles and equipment. Puntland didn't want to give up of any that.  The ship was turned away and their plane searched. In any case, Puntland is in very awkward position.

The Bebera military base by UAE might  have saved the Somali government and people in general from a very serious plot to not only destabilize the country but also control it's military and parliament.

UAE had sent both it's military trainers and army to Aden, Yemen to boost the government of Abdul Haddi Mansour. After two and half years, they built a separatist army that want to secede the south from the rest of Yemen. The toothless Arab league might protest, but the Emirates kept their trained army in Aden port. They pay their salary and their commanders answer only to them. Soon, they might declare a new state and take over the port.

Folks, Somali has dogged a huge bullet and plot.

Che I think it is UAE that is in awkward position. It is a major loss for them to lose FG and Puntland. Of couse both will lose millions unless UAE is ordered by Washington to continue funding anti terrorist efforts. It is high time Somali leaders come up with local financing of vital national projects.

if UAE complains and wants its training equipment, let the government of Puntland authorize that niyoow. for now, the airport authority didn't have any mandate to let them leave with weapons or hidden cash.

No you wrong again. Why will Puntland humiliate UAE if they wanted to keep good relations? How do you know Cumar Abdirashid was mediating?. Some local news outlets are reporting that UAE wanted Puntland to claim the seized money which they refused. Whatever the reason, Puntland did the right thing and supports the national government. No one has problems with this except die hard secessionist who have no credibility in this matter.

Abdiwali spoke very well and in a balanced way. He clarified things and some fake news that has been circulating in the media, while making sure he does  not contradict the central government statements. After all, UAE-Puntland agreement to build and fund PMP is separate from the TFG UAE in Mogadishu, and that is what Somalia suspended not the Puntland deal.

Abdiweli is close to UAE and everyone who understands his politics knows that. he spoke of the need for balance with the UAE. as much as we support the government in Mogadishu, you and I know at the end of the day, Mogadishu will never send a penny to Puntland to help train our troops so if UAE is willing to do that while following the rules of Somali Republic, we welcome them. if they want to leave, so be it. let them leave.

Here is where Puntland is paying a heavy price for Somalia. I hope a thnak you from the rest and some money to partly in a small way compensate for all the losses is on its way.

Puntland is not benefitting anything from Turkey/Qatar, but is giving up a lot.

If the FG sorts its problems and starts governing, will be all worth it, but if all this effort is wasted, Puntland will be left holding an empty bag and nothing to show for it.

The PMP training (formerly Saracen) was well before any agreement they made with the TFG and hence Puntland sees it separate from their military training in Mogdishu, hence Puntland urgument is, TFG's minstry of defence ediction does not have effect on the PMP project and they should get on the job. If you listen carefully to Abdiwali he is reassuring the UAE that it is business as usual in Puntland and whatever disagreement they have with the TFG is nothing to do with Puntland.  CleverI thought! because somali proverb goes: Sidee xero loo xagtaa ilkana u nabad galaan. If Somalia and UAE are in dispute, your argument does not work. Even agreements done 1000 years ago all come to question. The worst part of this is the Americans will also have less co-operation with Puntland by way of UAE.
