Dogs have been and will always be man’s best friend. Throughout the history dogs have been used as sheepherders, guards, and in some cultures for games. So in principle having a dog for a reasonable purpose is not haram. The logistics of keeping a dog in your house as a Muslim is a different story but even that does not make it haram.
