i think you guys are missing an opportunity for unity here.

instead of seeing this as a sign of division, why not see it as a rally call? i mean, a certain tribe does have a stronghold of that region, so much so, that the region is called O---. why dont we respond with our support nontheless. what is stopping us?

i mean, as much inter-tribal friction we have had throughout history, its only since siad barre's rule that tribalism has been a real issue. i support the concept that we have to unify, and by doing so, disengage from tribes in the political arena, but why completely ignore it? sometimes, such as in this case, its a factor. the region is called Oga---, all somalis know it as Oga---!!! in fact, the fact that we refer to it as Oga-- re-emphasizes the territory's somali roots, as opposed to ethiopian. why shouldnt the name of their liberation movement reflect that? i dont think it seperates or alienates anyone, and for the record im not of that tribe, i just think that we cant put a blanket over history because we're shell shocked from what weve recently experienced.

i mean we dont want to be politically correct at the expense of acknowledging the truth, do we?

You seem to be mixing up things; just because you dislike Somaliland's ambitions and you think the TFG is the only tool to stop them. Well, somalilanders must be won over and must not be subjugated to the otherwise sacred unionist jingo!

AS MMA, accurately summed up whether in Qabridahar or in Muqdisho, the fight is for freedom and bring somali's togather (at least that is what i think it should be).

As to the link to the somali Re-liberation struggle, I am proud of anyone contributing to it, contrary to what 'US/Xabashi-worshipers think)

How about Somali National Liberation Front.

http://www.awdalnews.com/wmview.php?ArtID=9612

Sorry to have all of you back at the beginning but its necessary for most of you to understand this struggle. This struggle is not between the alienation of one tribe or another but the liberation of all the people that reside in that region. Now their have been many approaches towards this endeavor by previous organizations before the present one and they have all failed to achieve freedom. There were many reasons why the failed but May piece here is not to discuss all of them but to focus on a particular one; Mainly the naming of the region. There have been couple of names for the region but we will focus on a particular one and why it failed. Somaligalbeed was the name the struggle took after much deliberation at the yaqbidheweyne conference near balidogle in January 1976 at the behest of the Somali government. The main organs of the organization were selected under the close eye of the Somali government. The wslf went to work mobilizing grass root support while the Somali government contributed to the training and equipping of the new organization. In the following months the wslf confronted the Ethiopians in many battles and skirmish and to their credited gained many victories over the Ethiopians which in turn boosted their standing and appeal to the people of the region. Overall the wslf was superb in their battlefield engagement with the Ethiopians; But their troubles aroused from their appeal at the world stage and there dependence on the Somali government.

The diplomatic side of this struggle was mostly spearheaded by the Somali government. It worked tirelessly to garner support for the liberation movement. In small time frame the wslf had offices in most Arab capitals and many African countries. But it was mostly overshadowed by the Somali government. Add that to the constant and tireless work by the Ethiopians to show this as a pet project by the Somali government and it was very apparent that we weren’t gaining much ground on the diplomacy. On the other hand, the Somali government first and for most was responsible for the people of territories that gained independence and their needs and when the situation got precarious they had to restrained there support from the wslf. This meant that the wslf was mostly paralyzed and their functions compromised. This was a big setback for people who were yearning for an eminent independence and big frustration for the many of the gallant liberationist fighters and it brought the whole struggle to a halt. Eroding whatever battle victories the wslf achieved.

With that in mind the people of this region choused to support an organization that existed but mainly dysfunctional do to its early age and suppression by the Somali government and the wslf, namely the olf nasrullah. Which latter transformed itself to the ONLF. Its pretty obvious why this people choused to be in control of their destiny. They could no longer depend on the larger Somali family to rescue them from the abyss of oppressions.

Now here is where the disconnect is between the Somali masses of the two independent territories and the colonized ****** region and where many misunderstanding happens here in sol. The people of the ****** region expect there struggle to be continuous till they gain independence and the Somali independent territories want to rebuild there country and pause hostilities with Ethiopia. Basically we have different priorities and with that brings with it advantages and disadvantages. If we are to adapt this name Somaligalbeed then obviously we would be limited in our diplomatic capacity but we may garner much needed support from the larger Somali family( which is not guaranteed because they will have to tend to there needs and struggles) and ofcourse Ethiopia will get a lot of support from western countries as victim of Somali assault. This is precisely what happened in the 1970s and 1980s. or we can come up with our own name which may be understandable to the western countries and count on the Somalis to understand that hey we still need your help but please understand our situation. And this is where many people here in sol which is typical of Somalis at large, get lost.

In view of all the prons and cons, how about SOM-GADENIA. Ethiopia can't say it is a somali expansitionst endeavour; and the rest of the somali's don't see the clan they so-boviously are freaked with here. Or any other name!

Paranoid as we tend to be, it would help if ONLF insisted on its multiclanic vision as well as their willingness to let all clans have their say equally as Somalis have long been accustomed to corrupt, secular politicians, riddled with inferiority complexes vis-a-vis foreign cultures, values and priorities, resulting in genocidal legacies in addition to environmental disasters.

Given our context, the only available framework to do so is obviously through a close collaboration with our Islamic Ulamas and leaders, the only coherent as well as credible alternative against all form of neo-colonialism, with unshakable moral foundations.

In practical terms, every concerned Galbeed Somali, just like any other Muslim, should never lose an opportunity to denounce and expose the acculturation scheme perpetrated by agnostic, atheist, Christian or secular "Somalis" through their criminal manipulation of clanishness, out of awe for their Western questionable "models" coupled with their addiction for short-term gains...

I couldn't say it better my brother. But lets look at was said at the beginning of this conversation. There are those who assume that onlf by virtue of its name is clannish movement disregarding its manifesto, its makeup, and its appeal to the masses. I have tried to explain why the somaligalbeed name failed and why the present movement choused the name it did, but there always be some in every community that cannot be pleased. Their hell bent on disenfranchising the community for there selfish gains. By exploiting clan lines ( which is Ethiopia most successful scheme thus far), and portraying a monster out of those who fight for the oppressed. I agree with you that onlf should insist on its multiclanic approach but we should stand up against and denounce the debodhilif’s ruse to breach and weaken our solidarity.

i think the one's that are freaked out of a regions name while feeling perfectly well with ethiopia would also freak out of som-gadenia or any other name for that matter. their contention is not with a name but the outsourcing of their jobs as Henchmen's of an occupation.

GARHAYE;

Aptly put. I agree. Was extending the insidious lairs a bit more. I know their agenda has nothing to do with liberation!

^The reason Ethiopia cut off ties with Qatar is Al-Jazeera giving the ONLF significant coverage.

Ethiopia severes ties with Qatar

Monday, 21 April 2008 17:11 UK

Ethiopia's government has announced it is breaking off relations with Qatar.

The Foreign Ministry said it was because of "Qatar's attempts to destabilise the sub-region and its hostility towards Ethiopia itself".

Ethiopia is thought to be angry at recent coverage from Al-Jazeera, based in Doha, and financial support given to Eritrea, accused of backing rebels.

Although the two countries have diplomatic relations, neither has an embassy in the other's capital.

The Foreign Ministry statement accuses Qatar of being blinded by arrogance and remaining deaf to all Ethiopia's attempts to persuade it to change its ways.

According to the BBC's Elizabeth Blunt in Addis Ababa, Foreign Ministry sources say that the Ethiopian government believes Qatar is giving substantial sums of money - amounting to something like $150,000 a month - to Eritrea, which then go on to fund insurgents in Ethiopia's Somali region, the ****** National Liberation Front.

A reference in the statement to the output of Qatar's media outlets points the finger at the international television channel Al-Jazeera, which is based in Qatar, she says.

Al-Jazeera recently broadcast a series of reports from the ******, to which the Ethiopian government took great exception, describing them as propaganda films for a terrorist organisation.

ADDIS ABABA (AFP) — An Ethiopian rebel group on Tuesday criticised the government for breaking diplomatic ties with Qatar, saying the reasons it did so were "far from reality".

Addis Ababa severed relations with Qatar on Monday citing the Gulf State's "strong ties" with its arch-foe Eritrea and support to armed opposition groups within the country.

It also accused Qatar of becoming a "major source of instability" in the Horn of Africa region.

"If there has been a destabilising factor in the Horn of Africa, it has been the regime currently in power in Ethiopia," the ****** National Liberation Front (ONLF) said in a statement.

"The Ethiopian regime's severing of diplomatic relations with Qatar is based on accusations which are far from reality and designed to divert attention from yet another unfolding African genocide in ******."

The ONLF, operating in Ethiopia's southern ****** region, is fighting for the independence of ethnic Somalis in the region, who they say have been marginalised by Addis Ababa.

Ethiopia also charged that Qatar was using its media to undermine it, after the Qatar-based Al-Jazeera news network aired a series of reports earlier this month on the ****** region, where a news blackout has been imposed.

"Qatar follows Norway as the latest victim of the Ethiopian regime's paranoia in its dealings with the members of the international community," the ONLF added.

It said Ethiopia "can no longer conceal the systematic and deliberate persecution of an entire people solely because of their ethnic heritage and desire for self-determination".

The regime can also no longer conceal the fact that it is not in effective control of ******

NAIROBI, April 22 (Reuters) - Ethiopian rebels denied on Tuesday government allegations that Qatar was supporting them, after Addis Ababa cut diplomatic ties with the Gulf State and accused it of backing terrorism and destabilising the region.

Ethiopia, a U.S. ally and the biggest military power in the Horn of Africa, said on Monday it had earlier expressed concern in private about Qatar's "hostile behaviour" several times.

It said Qatar was backing its arch-foe Eritrea, as well as helping Islamist insurgents in Somalia and Ethiopian separatists like the ****** National Liberation Front (ONLF).

But the ONLF said that the charges were designed only to divert attention from what it called an "unfolding African genocide" by government forces in its remote eastern region.

"Qatar has played a constructive role in Africa , the Arab world in general and the Horn of Africa in particular," the rebel group said in a statement.

"If there has been a destabilising factor in the Horn of Africa, it has been the regime currently in power in Ethiopia."

Ethiopia's support for a Western-backed interim government in Somalia has been a major source of contention in the region, and brought calls for jihad from some extremist groups.

The statement from Addis Ababa on Monday said Qatar's hostile behaviour "included the output of its media outlets", a presumed reference to the Al Jazeera Arab satellite TV network.

Al Jazeera has in recent days been broadcasting reports on the conflict in the ****** region that have been critical of the military's role against local rebels.

Qatar, a member of the OPEC group of major oil producers and the world's biggest exporter of liquefied natural gas, is also an important American ally and hosts a large U.S. military base.

On Monday, a Qatari government official in Doha dismissed the Ethiopian accusations as "frivolous and irresponsible" and said the emirate had always done its utmost to fight terrorism.
