A tank in a built up city is useless, ask the Russians in Chechniya, or the Israelis in Gaza.

Its like trying to kill a fly with a hammer.
:DIf you think tanks don't win you wars just as the HAMAS. The tanks are the reason why the city of Grozny is booming today.

Sayid the all time attention seeker. Duke any future government will need heavy military hardware but at this moment and at this fight, tans wont play a decisive role at all. Tanks destroy other tanks and military installations like bases and building not an ak47-wielding thug with a cimaamad

To crush an armed insurgency, you need fire-power. Tanks give you that. Any-time, the government and the insurgency are using the same weapons, you create a quagmire, and an un-winnable situation. Tanks are game changers and one of the many reasons why the Islamic Courts Movement couldn't defeat the Ethiopian occupation.

The government doesn't need tanks, it needs AIRPLANES. And you don't need F-15s either.

Some Mig-21s will do. Cheap, more or less reliable, splendid plane. The AK47 of the sky.

With a handful of Migs you can easily dismantle all of the rebels' technicals. A skilled pilot can do it even within city limits. Also, you can chase the rebels throughout the jungles, villages and grasslands.

With airplanes, there's no hiding.

Armed helicopters are what this government needs. They are easy to make operational and cost cheaper to maintain and in urban theaters of war, provide accuracy and firepower.

Planes are useless in cities.

Emperor

No such form or kind of arson would defeat the terror group of Alshabaab, no matter how sophisticated or powerful that weaponry may be, certainly you would have an advantage in a face to face battle, however not a total defeat, America would have won in Afganistan, Iraq and now Pakistan....

The only way to defeat such group is to win the hearts and minds of the Somali people, sadly and contrary to that, all this government is doing is to taint and completely destroy any good image they may had and are showing to be nothing more than Wallad Abdalla's puppet and few NGO's based in Nairobi.

If anything, Alshabaab will use this as an opportunity to win over many Somalis and recruit more fighters and earn sympathy by showing that Sheikh Shariif is nothing more than foreign created, foreign backed, foreign armed and foreign protected puppet who sold the Somali sea to profit few low key UN officials and NGO's....

Somalia doesn't need tanks, it needs food for the poor and malnourished children in the refugee camps...

80 tanks purchased. I must agree with comments about using tanks against an insurgency is useless. But shabab is in full fledge battle mode and therefore the tanks will be helpful.

As for when they resort to insurgency which they will the only way the government will combat that is to get properly trained intelligence officers from the c.i.a and also start buying the support of shabab top leaders.

Miskin..the presdident made wise decision regarding purchasing the tanks...when shabab raises up it's offensive...the tanks can be used to end the battle alot quicker n more effective.

However i must add this won't solve the insurgency issue..only solves the issue when shabab is in full fighting mode on the battle field. The insurgency need top intelligence officers to stop their suicide bombings, and hit n run attacks before it happens..that's why a well-trained intelligence department is crucial in this war. To unfoil shabab attacks before it happens.

Their is cia base in djibouti, so let's hope the tfg tells the american's he needs them to train up his security department.
