Omar Jamal takes post with Somali Mission to UN

November 17, 2009

Minneapolis (AP) — A well-known advocate for Somalis in Minnesota has taken a new job with the Permanent Mission of the Somali Republic to the United Nations.

Omar Jamal, 36, is in New York City this week, getting credentials and getting to work.

Somalia's ambassador to the United Nations, Elmi Ahmed Duale, says Jamal was appointed about a week ago to the position of first secretary. Duale says Jamal will represent Somali interests on various U.N. committees.

Jamal says Somalia is under siege by al-Shabab and he'll make an "urgent appeal to save the country from al-Qaida."

As many as 20 young men have left the Minneapolis area to possibly fight with the terror group in Somalia.

Jamal, who has led the Somali Justice Advocacy Center since 2001, says he'll ask board members to appoint a new executive director.

In the past (up to the 1980's), the Somali Mission to the UN was one of the most prestigious postings a Somali diplomat could have.

Not a good start for him indeed, for he could have said

"urgent appeal to help Somalia and save it from destruction, hunger and foreign intervention"

instead, he used the "Al=Qaeda red card" used by many to showcase their roles!

But, his mission is of a humanatarian role, so he better concentrate on that, and distance himself from any political gestures.

Could be me but are more puntlanders assuming more positions thanks to president faroole cahoots with the TFG. We all know the twin cities to be a puntland enclave. Is this a case of merit or political patronage reminiscent of the MOD hegemony in the 1980s.

Omar jamal is not a somali advocate but rather a selfish ******* who capitalizes on the somalis sufferings at all costs

He reached where he is now on the expenses of somalis both in MN and back home. He gave somalis such a bad rep and always potrays them negatively. He neither qualifed nor represent somalis.

Its unfortunate now that he will do the samething in the international arena as he did in MN.

Here is a link to write to MPR and voice your disagreement of potraying this crazy dude as a somali activist/advocate
