  6. Somali Talks in Kenya: "The Drunk who lost his keys ..." By Somali Intellectuals Forum Mogadishu, Somalia July 10, 2003 A drunk who had lost the keys to his home was on his knees looking for them under a street lamp, when a passerby offers to help in the search, but after some time with no success, the passerby asked the drunk, "Where did you lose your keys?" The drunk replied, "outside my front door." "Then why are we looking for them out here under the street lamp?" asked the passerby. "Because," replies the passerby, "there is more light here." The Somali reconciliation conference currently underway in Kenya is being conducted like the search for the drunk's keys. Ambassador Bethwell Kiplagat is insisting on the same old formula that failed in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Angola and many times in Somalia itself. The Ambassador's formula is let us satisfy the war criminals' lust for power then peace will reign. Over the objections of the human rights activists, on July 7, 1999 the government of Sierra Leone and the RUF rebels signed a peace agreement brokered by the United Nations, Organization of African Unity (OAU), and ECOWAS, committed the RUF to lay down its arms in exchange for representation in a new government. It also included a general amnesty for all crimes committed during the civil war, and mandated the formation of a truth and reconciliation commission and a national human rights commission. Sankoh, the head of the RUF who was in custody and sentenced to death was offered a place in a coalition government - with control of the diamond mines. The United Nations assembled a new peacekeeping force, and the RUF fighters, along with the other disparate groups of militia brigands, were supposed to integrate with the national army. That delusion came to an abrupt halt when the RUF took several hundred UN soldiers hostage. Similarly, the civil war in Liberia was brought to an end with the election of Charles Taylor on July 19, 1997 with 75% of the vote. According to Human rights watch 'the implicit threat that Charles Taylor would resume the fighting if he lost was high on the minds of Liberian voters. Many categorized their vote for the man who had started the war and whose faction had been responsible for widespread atrocities against civilians as "a vote for peace."' With the support of Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso and eventually that of President Sani Abacha of Nigeria, Mr. Taylor got the power he killed many Liberians for. Somali warlords are hoping that with a similar formula i.e. the support of Ethiopia they too will taste and revel in the power for which they have killed hundreds of thousands of Somalis. Prime Minister Meles Zenawi should read again this quote from IRIN on 30 Dec 1998 in Abidjan "Liberia said yesterday (Tuesday) it might withdraw from the ECOWAS Committee of Six on Sierra Leone if governments continued to accuse it of arming and feeding RUF rebels." Just as Mr. Zenawi's regime is today a member of the IGAD steering committee on Somalia while arming the warlords in Somalia, Mr. Taylor's was a member of the ECOWAS committee of Six on Sierra Leone while arming the warlords in Sierra Leone. Today, Mr. Taylor is an indicted war criminal for arming and supporting the warlords in Sierra Leone. What a difference a mere four or five years can make! A government of the warlords, for the warlords, by warlords is unacceptable and will not lead to peace. The warlords Mr. Kiplagat wants to form the Somali government are the same ones who have not respected the ceasefire they have signed in Eldoret on October, 2002. It is about time Mr. Kiplagat learned from the mistakes of Sierra Leone and Liberia and first demand sanctions on the warlords who broke the ceasefire i.e. Col. Abdullahi Yusuf , Mohamed Dheere, Shaatigaduud and Muse Suudi
  7. I don't understand how people get offended by stuff that's none of their business. Some of you act like he cheated on you personally. I don't get it. If he were above me as a human being (which nobody is), then maybe I would hold him to a higher standard, but since I have enough common sense to know that he is " just a man", why would I waste my time and energy worrying about what he does in his personal life? Is he my friend (No), brother(No),cousin(No). Then why would Kobe Bryants' indiscretions stress me out? Kobe Bryant owes you nothing people, he doesn't even know you exist, so relieve yourselves of the anger and stress he has caused you. It's pointless. There it is...thats all that needs to be said.
  8. ^^ your right....I would have started earlier but work and family got in the way. tonight is the night..for sure insha alaah.
  9. I have an intro to Epidemiology exam on monday night....6 chapters..Haven't even started reading!!! Ilaahayow help me!! Too much damn stress!!!!
  10. all with the Intention of helping Muslims who don't care about you and won't pay you to get rid of your debt. Isn't Islam about being selfless? Do you do good for the people only with the understanding that you will always get a reward or be thanked by them? Why, you can also help the DEEN as a Care Taker or "WORSE YET" as a FULL TIME HOME ENGINEER? Thats true, but my brotha I think you miss took this whole post to be about us females being against staying at home and taking care of our families. There is nothing in this world more rewarding than raising your children in the way of the diin. But what needs to be realised is that us muslim women staying at home and taking care of our kids is dependent upon whether or not the muslim man is willing and able to take care of his family. Lets be honest, how many somali men actually take full responsiblity of their families? compare that with the number of somali men that put their families on government assistance and food stamps. YOu do the math. You at the Heart of the Matter is FEMALE INSECURITY and b/c many sisters have grown up in a Single family home in the West, they really don't trust men to be the SOLE Provider cause they have seen tooo many men in their lives take off on their families and wives and they don't want to become a Single Mother on Welfare. They want a career just incase Farax gets fed up with her tomorrow and decided to leave her. But inshallah, if you have IMAN and make du'a, Allah will give you what your SOUL DESERVES, just put your TRUST IN HIM (not an easy thing to do by any measure!!!) INSECURITY?...isn't our insecurity well founded?

  12. your twisting my words hon.... All i'm saying is that since you can't kill them or punish them in any other way..all you can do is make people aware of the sin and leave it at that.
  13. I'm not the least suprise FS that you give me that response b/c I have the lines umptin' times. You expected that? Isn't true that any action can help you get closer to allah and help you better understand your diin and your purpose in this world if you do this action with the right niyah? Inna mal acmaalu bi niyaah....right? With that: wouldn't going to school and majoring in lets say medicine be a form of cibaadah if you do it with the intention( niyaah) of helping your fellow muslim and to help relieve the pain and suffering of this ummah?
  14. ^^^ The word "hijab" comes from the Arabic word "hajaba" meaning to hide from view or conceal. In the present time, the context of hijab is the modest covering of a Muslim woman.
  15. Al amr bel ma'a roof wa nahyi an monker " That sums it all up....thats about all you can do about homosexuality. IF you can't punish them then what "rights" can you take away from them? Teh biggest right is the right to live....can you take that right away from them?
  16. I'm not saying that homosexuality is right...god forbid. All i'm saying is there is no individual or government that is equipt to hand out punishments according to the shariah(sp?) There are steps to be taken...rules to follow. Its like trying to build a house and starting from the roof...you gotta start with the foundation first.
  17. ^( Darman) who gave you or anyone else the right to point at people and their mistakes. First before you even decide to flog or stone anyone to death....you need to think about you and your islam and your standing with allah.
  18. So with that logic its safe to conclude that according to you we should just sit at home and pursue only religious knowledge? that any cilmi beyound religion is useless and will not help us in perfecting our religion?
  19. ^^ So your saying that only applies to females? Well if thats the case then, what does 4yrs at a Univ. studying Engineering have to do with Islam? If what you are studying is not being related to this relationship of Man to ALLAH The same could be asked of the muslim men...could it not?
  20. to all those that are attacking opinio; please watch ur tones and dont use emotions , because when it comes to islam we are supposed to talk to oneother kindly and not attack when another, now that she has raised few question answers it to the best of ur knowledge and bring evidence on u or else dont respond, My thoughts exactly....Why all the personal attacks? If you have knowledge enough about the diin to answer Opinionated's questions then do so but don't include your own personal thoughts on what kind of a muslim she is....thats between allah and her. Its no wonder there are so many muslims who know so little about their own religion...everytime they bring up a point that they want clearified they get a million angry stares and even angrier words! Subaxaan alaah!! Stick to the facts...clear cut facts!
  21. So i agree with you FS, lakiin still i think the best alternative is like always somewhere in between. I dont think that the need be some Conflict between the 2 Supposed roles, if, and it is a bigg if (relatively speaking)the Husband and the wife concerenced are doveted to each other and are willing to work in the best interest of their union. your right it all depends on how Compromising the 2 people are. Its up to them to figure out what works for their family.
  22. I see a double standard here. In order for a muslim woman to stay home and raise her family she needs to know that her husband can and will work to provide her and her children with a comfortable lifestyle. Lets not forget that it is pretty common for a somali man to place his family on welfare and expect a $500 government check to take care of them. Most of us females, having seen that kind of thing occuring in greater numbers, think that we have to have a career so that we are better equipt to take care of the needs of our family.
  23. Nur and Conscious Manipulation I'm glad you enjoyed this piece. I think it sums up the feelings you have when you have performed your salaah with sincerity and devoution. Nur looking forward to your write up walaal.
  24. And So I Bow Running in again, the third time today and just in from Math Honors Society she doesn't even stop to catch her breath before jumping into the restroom to make a quick ablution. Frantically trying to beat time she runs and almost falls down the stairs, stumbling over her feet. Finally calm and assembled she assumes her normal composure of sincerity and focus. As she lifts her hands up over her shoulders to symbolically push all material concerns away, she quietly utters three of the most powerful words she has ever known: "God is Greatest." Already absorbed in her prayer her body begins to tremble slightly, as if a rush of emotions is building up waiting to break free. She bends her head slightly to direct her gaze at the ground and the corner of her head-covering falls softly over her elbow. In a sincere and humble tone she recites verses of the Holy Qur'an, of which she has so persistently worked long and hard to memorize. She gives herself up to the power of the occasion as she bows down to her Lord, face on floor in a position of the utmost humility. "Praise be to my Lord the Most High," she repeats to herself three times with only the desire to please her Lord. Asking forgiveness and giving thanks, she stands up again but this time with teary eyes. She can not help but be overcome with emotions at the remembrance of His infinite mercy and kindness. She can not help but feel ashamed of all the hurtful things she has said and done and all the ways in which she has misused His gifts to her. Like the devoted believers of old she prays her prayer as if it is her last. As if this is her final chance to seek forgiveness, redeem herself, give thanks, and draw herself closer to the Almighty. Grief stricken and frightened she suddenly realizes how unworthy and unthankful she is, how wasteful and materialistic she has grown. In such a state she appeals to her Lord, "Forgive me, educate me, guide me." Again she recites from the Qur'an and it lifts her spirit and gives her hope; "If Allah findeth any good in your hearts, He will give you something better than what has been taken from you, and He will forgive you for Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful. (8:70) Allah hath prepared for them gardens under which rivers flow, to dwell therein: that is the supreme felicity. (9:89)" She pleads her case, "I've always tried my hardest, challenged myself for the best, advocated service to You and your creations, worked to increase my knowledge, and all for You. Please give me the strength, hope, and willpower to persevere." As her prayer nears an end she again bows down. A calmness and peace seem to surround her, encircle her rolled up body and rest upon her arched back. She suddenly feels as if she can do no wrong, as if nothing evil can touch her. She sits upright again and turns her head to the right and then the left saying "Peace and blessings be unto you" to the angels perched on her shoulders. Her spirit and mind is renewed and she is ready to work hard, contribute positively, and achieve the best. She is ready for the challenge and the sacrifice and suddenly her A.P. Calculus project no longer seems so impossible and uninteresting.
