Borama (QARAN)- The Governor of Awdal, Mudane Mohamud Sheikh Abdillahi has made an appeal to the Somaliland government for urgent assistance to the local residents severely affected by heavy rains in the region. At a press conference held at Rays Hotel in Borama, Mudane Mohamed Sheikh Abdillahi along with a delegation, consisting of Somaliland Representatives and co-ordinators, recently back from the affected areas gave a briefing on the situation. In his news conference, the Governor confirmed that at least four people included three women and one man have lost their lives as a result of the severe weather, along with an estimated loss 33,000 heads of livestock, mainly sheep, as well as, the local wildlife. Also speaking at the press conference was Mudane Ahmed Barkhad Obsiye, member of the Somaliland House of Representatives who spoke of the critical situation which having a profound affect in the region in terms of the social, economic, and environmental situation. According to the Mudane Obsiye, the residents of the area have been forced to leave their homes in search of shelter, food and medicine, and he also mentioned giving assistance to people on the road towards to town of Dilla. Mudane Obsiye called on the Somaliland government to mobilise an urgent appeal to both international and national organisation in order to provide relief to residents of the affected area. The local delegation to the affected areas spoke of a dire situation in which about 14 people are suffering from psychological problems brought about by the conditions on the ground, and the lack of assistance. The Governor of Awdal, Mudane Mohamud Sheikh Abdillahi confirmed that an emergency committee has been set up to co-ordinate the relief programme for the area, and he also encouraged the people of Somaliland both at home and abroad to come to the aid of the residents of the affected areas. The severe weather in the region which occurred in the area between Burmadow and Buurcad, has had an adverse effect on the mainly rural residents and their livestock. The most severely affected villages are Geerisa, Farsaxidhka, Fadhi Xun, Weeraar, Caroweyne, Garbodadar, Waraqadhigta, C/Xaydh, Gargaari Bari, and the areas around Seemaal, Baki and Cadaad.

Islamist insurgents briefly seized control of Somalia's biggest military airfield on Friday and looted weapons, witnesses and an Islamist commander said. Muktar Ali Robow, leader of the al-shabab rebel militia, told a local radio station his forces also captured government troops during the raid on Baledogle, about 100 km (60 miles) west of the capital Mogadishu . "We seized Baledogle airport, took supplies of arms and also captured some Somali soldiers but we released them," Robow told Shabelle Radio by telephone from an undisclosed location. Residents said Islamist fighters armed with machineguns and rocket-propelled grenades took control of the airfield before breaking into two armouries. They then left. "They seized the airport and killed three soldiers. We saw them taking government weapons with them and burning two battlewagons," resident Ali Aded Diriye told Reuters. Somalia's interim government and its Ethiopian military allies have faced an Islamist-led insurgency since it routed a sharia courts group from Mogadishu at the start of last year. Robow also told Shabelle that al-shabab fighters killed 11 government troops in separate clashes in central Somalia's Hiran Province on Thursday. That could not be immediately verified. But, unwittingly, Wardheernews dot com hit itself in the foot. This article of Mr. Qaybe works to Somaliland’s advantage. How? You see, this shows that die-hard opponents of Somaliland are being won over. If the man who uttered those words in 1994, is today one of the leaders of Somaliland who are campaigning for its cause, what does that tell you about Somaliland? Evidently, this is very revealing. It shows that Somaliland cannot be stopped and that Somalilanders are coming home. Mr. Qaybe is not the first and will not be the last to come home. There are many who came before him and others who followed him. And who is on the way now? The Samaters? Cumar Yare? It is sad to see Faisal Roble’s Wardheernews wasting a lot of energy and effort in a battle it can not win. If Roble really knew the people of Somaliland very well he wouldn’t have chosen this battle because he would have known that there is no chance for him to win. The only thing that propelled him into this is blind and unmitigated tribalism. He just hates Somaliland and its people. This is inexplicable, but this is the truth. Mr Roble’s obsession with Somaliland is very revealing in another way. It shows why Somalia cannot pull itself from this bottomless pit she has been in for the past 17 years. Somalis will do anything except what they need to do, which is to attend to and solve their problems. To sit together, respect each other, and listen to the grievances of each other. Finally, Mr Roble and anyone who hopes to harm Somaliland should know this: the determination and perseverance of Somaliland is legendary. I hate to gloat but there is no going around this fact. If Siyad Barre with all his power and methods could not vanquish Somaliland, how can a punch of refugees in a far land? Sarmad Shaykh
