Some 3,000 villagers have attended an elaborate Hindu wedding ceremony in eastern India for two monkeys. The "bride" was dressed in a five-metre long sari and decked in flowers. The ceremony took place last Thursday in Ghanteswara village in Orissa state. The guests were served a feast of rice, lentils, vegetables, fish and sweets. Monkeys are revered idols in Hindu mythology. But the couples that took in and "married" off the two monkeys in Orissa say they love them as pets. The monkey marriage took place some 200km (125 miles) from the Orissa state capital, Bhubaneswar. The "groom", a three-year-old male monkey named Manu, was taken by procession to a temple in the company of hundreds of bemused onlookers, accompanied by loud music, dancing and fireworks. 'Unique experience' Women welcomed the groom with loud, synchronised ululations typical in a Hindu marriage while priests chanted sacred hymns. "It was a unique experience for me. It was the first time I conducted a marriage between two animals. But I followed all the rituals that I do in human marriages," said Daitari Dash, the priest. Women prepared the female monkey, named Jhumuri, as they would a human bride, draping her in a red sari and smearing her with sandalwood paste. The monkeys were showered with gifts by those present. They included a gold necklace for the bride, donated by a local businessman. "I feel as if my own daughter is getting married. I cannot bear the thought that she would not be with us anymore," Mamina, the woman who has been looking after the female monkey said. Mamina has been looking after Jhumuri since her husband found her at a local temple. The male monkey, Manu, was found in a mango orchard in a neighbouring village by a couple who raised it as their pet. The two monkeys, who were kept in chains before the marriage, have now been released by their owners. They have been spotted hanging out at the temple where the "marriage" took place. A local villager, Mitrabhanu Dutta, said the event was a "nice way to release the monkeys from captivity". BBC

The United Nations cultural agency announced today it will help Egypt build an innovative underwater museum in the Bay of Alexandria on the site of archaeological remains thousands of years old. The idea for a museum, located by Cleopatra's Palace and the mythical 3rd Century B.C. Alexandria Lighthouse, also known as Pharos, comes amid the growing recognition of the importance of underwater cultural heritage. The first-of-its kind museum will be partly above water and partly submerged where visitors will be able to see archaeological artefacts on the seabed, according to a press release from the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization: "This project will certainly enhance the appreciation of underwater cultural heritage and raise awareness of the urgent need to protect it from looting," said the Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura. "Until UNESCO's Underwater Cultural Heritage Convention enters into force, there is no specific international law that can protect it against treasure hunters," Mr. Matsuura added. The museum represents a major advance in underwater cultural heritage exhibitions and UNESCO has established an International Scientific Advisory Committee to help with the construction of the project, expected to begin later this year. UNESCO have also produced a documentary film focusing on its Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage and the importance of saving submerged cultural property, increasingly vulnerable to pillaging with the development of more sophisticated and affordable diving equipment.

ROGE - The third story of Cirsankayeed Series is just published
Jacaylbaro posted a topic in General
The story of ROGE starts with two people, neighbours of sorts, Nuura and Keenadiid. One fateful encounter between them left Nuura pregnant. Abandoned by Keenadiid, who decided to join the rebels, she was left alone and isolated, with only Asli, her aging grandmother as support. Nine months later, Nuura gave birth to a baby girl on a moonless night and in the middle of the dry river that runs through the city. At that exact minute Keenadiid was killed in action leaving a letter for his cousin Xaad begging him to look after his unborn child. With the civil war spreading death and bringing destruction, Xaad somehow managed to find Nuura and her daughter Ayaan. They married and Xaad encouraged the young girl to think and express herself freely. This upbringing gave Ayaan the confidence to challenge many of the stereotyping that she encountered, a privilege that her mother never had. When she was a young woman, Ayaan decided to travel to the capital Hargeisa to find work. At the same time, Kaahin, Xaad’s younger brother, was summoned by elders of their clan to become the Minister for Health in Somaliland. He arrived in Hargeisa from London not on his own but with an unwanted passenger, Roge, an AIDS virus that had travelled all the way from the States via Manchester in Britain, through Addis Ababa. The history that haunted her mother repeated itself one night in a Hargeisa hotel with Kaahin. Ayaan was left devastated and infected by the virus. She went back to her home town where she was cared for by her uncles Xaad and Dr. Qaalib. They convinced her that she is like any other person. Reinvigorated and full of self-belief, Ayaan decided to organise a campaign to educate people about AIDS. Three months after her infamous campaign trip Ayaan gave birth to a boy. He was named Keenadiid Ayaan Keenadiid by her uncle Xaad. At the same hour that she gave birth, her tormentor Kaahin died of AIDS in Hargeisa. About the author Cabdillaahi Cawed Cige is the author of “LADH” (Anguish), his first novel, that is considered a new literary generation for somali speaking readers, and that attracted exceptional positive reactions. Cabdillaahi is known also to the Somali community in the UK and Europe as a poet whose works has been widely published on the Somali internet-based media but he also wrote a number of short stories including “Hog Baas”(The Cursed Cave). All his stories share the theme of exploring suffering and the different means people learn to cope with it, and this his second novel, “ROGE”, is not an exception. About the series ‘ROGE’ is the third of ‘Cirsankayeedh’ series of Somali novels. The series is directed by Jama Musse Jama and published by Ponte Invisibile Ed. In popular Somali beliefs people can be addressed by invisible voices, but there is some uncertainty as to whether they are mystical birds or spirits. Cirsankayeedh is the name of one of these and is associated with good news. The idea behind ‘Cirsankayeedh’ series is to develop creative writings and culture of reading in Somali language. About the Publisher Ponte Invisbile Ed (Invisible Bridge) is based Pisa, Italy and has its main branches in Hargeisa (Somaliland) and in London (UK). It started publishing books in 2000 in different languages (Italian, English, Chinese and Somali) and from different cultural context. Somaliland: A nation on the move (Official video)
Jacaylbaro replied to Jacaylbaro's topic in Politics
The private sector is the best part of Somaliland. Everybody knows the government is not contributing that much except the security which allows the private sector to perform faster.
