There is thir one normally practiced in the west of Somaliland where the married couple should stay together for one full week right after the nikaax ,,, it is called (DADAB GAL),,,,, the unique part of this practice is that the man is staying in the bride's family house and is not allowed to go out of his room. He cannot even go to the mosque for prayers, he should stay and pray inside the room with his bride. Waxaas toddobaadka ayaa la dhahaa, and it is a Soomaali-wide custom; a Soomaali version of 'honeymoon.' Deegaankaas ma 'dadabgal' ayaa loogu yaqaanaa mise you are mispronouncing toddobaadka? Alas, Soomaalida in West do not have the luxury to do this, since shaqo iyo iskool iyo wax baas sugaayo right after guurka, and they don't have qaraabo u adeegaayo oo cunto kala nooc every meal u karinaayo that whole week. As a child, being inquisitive,I noticed on the night of the wedding, the older women, would make a point dancing all night next to the bride and grooms bedroom....How nosy where these old ladies!! I particular, found this interesting,as the bride and the groom enter their home. The bride is given a jug of milk, her feet are washed..while the groom carries a child boy...What was the significance of the washing of the feet? This seems regional. Where have you witnessed those weddings at? At some aroosyo, halxiraale iyo su'aale kale la isweydiiyo ayaa jirto, especially to bridegroom. This is popular in Waqooyi.

This thread may not fit in this section, nonetheless aan ku qoro qeybtaan. It is about Macalin Nuur. Yaa xasuusto Macalin Nuur? Ar maxaa laga dambeeye. A famous well-regarded man a whole section Soomaalida ka dambeyn jirtay, qadarin jireen. He also generously donated his large swath of land to Muqdisho and Banaadir residents -- anyone who died in Muqdisho pre-war was freely buried in that public Xabaalaha Macalin Nuur, named after him, which was located close to Afgooye. Anyway, I remembered him because I had seen his picture on yesterday's Aaden Cadde's funeral where he was present to pay his respects to Aaden Cadde. Seeing his image took me back as a very young boy in Xamar, back in 1989 or around. Macalin Nuur arrived one night to a wedding at our xaafad. He was wearing those bright, white go', same as he always does, including in following pictures. He was also shining, to us kids then at least. Anyway, ciyaalka -- and some adults -- started going after him, and kissing his hands, one after another. I too of course kissed his hand. When I saw the following pictures from yesterday's funeral, it reminded me that hand-kissing night. People are still kissing his hands as a sign of reverence.

It is even more now depressing seeing this image taken today of Aaden Cadde's funeral. Look at the right back side, that is what is left -- the ruined parliament tower being the most visible remains -- the old baarlamaan, the baarlamaan that Aaden Cadde's body is passing, the one he put the flag on the top on that unforgetful midnight of July 1st, 1960, with thousands cheering. Look at that lonely monument too, next to old parliament, the Daljirka Dahsoon, dedicated to Soomaali soldiers who fought defending their land. -

Thanks for the historical pictures, Jabhad. Castro, of course it really saddens anyone who had seen and lived in the glorious years of '60s of what had befallen to our nation in the last 20 years. It is not even saddening, it is depressing. I have a father who witnessed that era who quit long ago listening BBC Soomaali, other Soomaali media and reading about Soomaali pollitics because it deeply dispirits him. It is extra depressing to those who witnessed seeing some even risking their lives to save their fellow Soomaali leaders. One such heroic common episodes being the men who swallowed secret papers that were anti-colonial. And there there was that brave man who took the immunization shot intended for Cabdullaahi Ciise [Eebba ha u naxariistee], who was going to United Nation's headquarters in New York, but his fellow Soomaalis feared he would be poisoned by the colonial rulers who did not exactly liked him and other independence-seekers, so a brave Soomaali claimed to be Cabdullaahi Ciise and risked his life by taking that shot [talaal]. Damiir iyo isjeceyl Soomaalinimo indeed maxee ku jirtay dadkaas aabaheena wada ahaa. -
There are some distinct subcultural Soomaali traditions and customs about everything guur and aroos. Some are universal, followed and practiced by majority Soomaalis. Some are regional. The most widely practiced of them all is -- and this is the era long before weddings were held rented spaces, especially those at the West -- the nikaax always took place at the bride's family home. Always. Some other cultures may follow this tradition as well, I guess. Then there those that are regional. In some regions, it is bad omen for the family if the elder daughter remains unmarried while her younger sisters tie the knot [or perhaps should I've written tie the shaash?]. This is mostly in common in Soomaali Galbeed. Then there is that peculiar custom practiced on southern coastal cities and towns. It is the full cleansing and purification of the bride's body during the immediate week before the wedding day. She is given several baths a day; she cannot leave home and must not venture outdoors for a week. Then she is decorated on the last day cilaan, fully. Not your typical wedding cilaan, but this one is fully, including a nicely designed set on her private parts. It seems a curious custom adapted from Carabs, especially those Masaarida and Suudaanta. [i can guess depending your reaction, it would either be from ladies or  to some guys. Mine is ] Then there is saashsaar, though it is widely practiced these days in omni Soomaali culture-wide; it however wasn't always that. It used to be regional. Can you recall any other?

Si fiican ayaa u qortay, Yoonis. This is useless, a new found clan competition oo ii dheh, oo i maqal ah. Nothing else ay soo kordhineyso. Even though those popping-up so-called 'universities' are not universities in ideal sense, but some misnamed high school institutions. Now every degmo wants to have a 'university' when in fact some don't even have a proper high school. I just heard the other week another 'university' fundraising going on on several cities in the West, this one for Baydhabo. The entire Baydhabo area has one high school, a good one, but nonetheless one, called Model. Another point is that the vast overwhelming Soomaali children do not go to any school at all. Not even the primary ones ee marka jaamacaddaan la leeyahay waala dhisaayaa yaa buuxin doono?

Horta waxaaba la yaabay the deep ignoring of one fundamental issue that cuts deeply in feeble arguments of those who cherish to sustain the colonial British-marked, gumeysi boundaries -- how come did they forget the good, old grazing land of Hawd? Whatever happened to Hawd? Wasn't Hawd part of British-controlled gumeysi lands for many years until colonialists acceded it completely to Xabashadda in mid 1950s, and unlike the entire Soomaali Galbeed, which it did in '40s? No? Why no body goes after Xabashadda about Hawd -- let's just keep entire Soomaali Galbeed out for the sake of simplicity -- before this so-called 'good neighbour' of Xabashi? Oh, the master is feared since he is not Soomaali.

Dadka qaarkood Carab maba maqli karaan because the Carabs steadfastly refused to recognize their little deegaan as a sovereign nation. NB - The shir was not organized by Carab. We all heard the shocking news and the death of the former and the first president of Somalia. Even though I was somehow aware of his old age and ill-health, it really caught me by surprise. We are all mortal and death is unavoidable. Like a sand spilling out of an hourglass, our life will end the day our lord calls us to come home. The death of the former president may have relieved him of the debilitating effects of an old age and he might be in a better place today, however, I have a mixed feeling of what to make of the sad the news from Nairobi. Should we mourn his death or rejoice the good memory of a great leader? Should we celebrate his life and leadership or should we grieve the loss of an eminent statesman? Should we commemorate a life well-lived or bemoan its sudden and unexpected departure? Should we thank Allah for the providence of giving us this great political icon that guided us through a difficult period of our political history, or should we lament the unexpected passing of a beloved man who through his remarkable leadership became near and dear to all of us? How we feel or deem his death is a true testament of how he lived his life. One of the amazing characteristics of President Aden Abdulle as relayed to us by those who knew him well is his aura of grace and his unpretentious personality. While some political leaders would relish their time in the lime light, Aden led a new nation and never sought fame, fortune, or a notoriety of any kind. Although there has always been a certain virtue in vagueness when it comes to presidential piety, Aden’s extraordinary leadership would always be remembered not because we sang the never-fading songs of praise (guulwadow) but out of an admiration of a simple man who led us with absolute resolve; a man who assumed leadership without fanfare, and relinquished it with dignity; a man of reason who aimed high and reached the pinnacle of his political career, not through the barrel of the gun but through the fairness of the paper ballot. I am sure a tiny minority of my countrymen would not share my feeling for President Aden, but I have yet to encounter anyone with any ill-feeling toward him except of course few misguided souls whose their none-too-veiled attack of his presidency is born out of barely hidden bias but not based on an objective evaluation of his presidential tenure. Aden understood the ebb and the flow of power, but never abused it or used it improperly. His humble beginning from Belet-Wein and the lack of the superfluities of a formal education never handicapped him but allowed him to avoid the pitfalls of the presidential powers. From what I can garner from his contemporaries, Aden was a man of conviction who was tough as nails (remember his Iisho remarks) yet courtly in his courtesy. His unbending principles defined his presidency and his courage and inner grace shaped his character and individuality. Even though the rudeness of some of his political opponents turned the political dialogue into a veritable concerto of below-the-belt attacks, Aden was always gracious, cordial and polite. He never transgressed in exercising his democratic and presidential prerogatives and was never tempted to abuse his custodial duty. President Aden Abdulle was such a rarity and the real face that goes with the picture of a good leader. He was a quintessential, and very simply, a Somali hero and a great example to follow. I sometimes wonder of whether today’s Somalia was ever deserving of his leadership. There is never a good way to die, but Aden Adde taught us a grand way to live. May Allah bless his soul? C/weli M. A Word Of Respect To Late Aaden Cabdille Cismaan I received with greatest shock the news of the passing away of Aden Abdulle Osman, former President and a beloved son of Somalia. He was first ever President of the free Republic of Somalia from 1960 to 1967. A man of highest sterling qualities, caliber and character. He set an example to the Somali people as well as to other countries in the continent of Africa, the way to democracy. While under his leadership Somalia showed other countries how a democratic country should function. While Somalia led the way there was many countries which were languishing under dictatorship and totalitarian regimes. Aden Abdulle Osman, unlike most of his contemporaries in Africa, knew that power belonged to the people and not to an individual. In 1967, When he lost the election he gracefully relinquished power. I had the great honour of knowing Aden Abdulle Osman, from the days when was the President of the Constituent Assembly til he was elected as the First President of the Somali Republic in July 1960. I happened to be part of his staff until the midnight of July 1, 1960. I had the pleasure of seeing him hoist the national flag at the top of the National Assembly building. I was there on the roof of the Parliament, together with the rest of the staff of the various departments of the Parliament . I was among the lucky masses that had the chance to be present at that night, the fist moment of our independence. The cry of Soomaali Hannoolato, Soomaali ha midowdo, midnimada ha waarto, filled the square outside the Parliament House. And we, looking at the flag moving up higher and higher. Tears welled in our eyes with joy . Somalia has lost a great statesman. Not only the family members or close relatives will miss him, but all of us, especially those of us who knew him personally and working under his dynamic and wise leadership. We will all remember him as the most dedicated citizen and the father figure of the Somalis. The Almighty will reward him for his great services to the Somalis. I wish to convey my deepest sorrow and heartfelt condolences to my brothers Eng. Cabdulqaadir and Dr. Osman Aden Abdulle and through them to the rest of the family and relatives. May his soul rest in peace. Innaa Lllaahi wa inna Ilahay Rajicuun. - Ambassador Max'ed Cismaan Cumar
