  1. As for the ensuing cat fight... I would advise that all parties take a few moments to consider what is at stake here. It doesn't hurt to walk away from such trivial matter, It very childish to say the least. 2+2=5 - Please stop provoking people with your intelligent words. Alaia - it doesn't hurt to mind your own business once in a while. Queeny - calm down and please be more specific in your post so as to reduce confusion. Be patient!
  2. ^ you got funny ideas dude. What exactly are you waiting to bust out....?

These SYL fools were a few educated elite who were victors of history and as such the writers of history of their choosing. Their position in history needs to be revised and re-evaluated because at the time of their success, the whole process of de-colonisation has already started and they only jumped on the bang wagon joining many of the countries seeking self-determination from the colonial masters. These people [sYL] with their western conceptions of development and values sowed the seeds for discontent that still exist in Somalia today. I think we should also bear in mind that SYL acted unilaterally on many of the political issues that concerned Somaliland and other Somali settled areas during colonialism, without regard or consultation of their brothers.
  4. Its a real shame and very ungentlemanly to behave like this General. The facts remain that Somaliland will take time to be built, but this childish behaviour of yours is not really helping to ferment a discussion of serious calibre.

Yet Hassan never held any animosity towards Amir. I know it’s just a work of fiction, but it doesn’t stop you from thinking... There is no point of pondering over such an issue. Amir didn't have the courage to stop it. And hassan understood this. Also this is a work of fiction, please be careful not let it affect you in real life.

  11. If I was going to rate myself, it would obviously have to be understood in terms of my own perceptions whether based on prejudice or biases . So there is really no objective way of coming to such a conclusion. But compared to my friends, I am very intelligent, middle when it comes to looks and in the top percentile on personality.

How will you "one day be financially secure"? When it finally starts raining money? Admit it, you like the way you live - because if you didn't, you would do something about it. The fact you spend the little money you have on cigarettes and drugs tells it all (action speaks louder than words). Don't get me wrong, I live off my parents too - but that's because I'm a student and they don't want me to work. In your case, your family is simply prolonging the suffering/problems. You're a grown man, it's time for them to cut the financial umbilical cord, for your own good . Get a job and make your mother proud by taking care of yourself, man. You are are not in the full facts of my situation, so please don't make assumptions about me. I do agree that you have made good points but this is undermined by the fact that your constantly assuming. There is no difference between us, we are both living off parents so why then make judgement on me.
  13. Now, lets not let the conversation go to waste by being cynical. You started a fantastic thread, which has been lacking on these boards for some time now. Again this idea of secularism is embedded in the enlightenment (funny they call it that) period, which among many things was overtly responsible for creating many things - including a denial of oral traditions and customary law of many African countries would be considered void under their positivist/legocentric (law has been written to be law) methodology. Also, they denied religion/custom because its architects were afraid it would endanger the supremacy of the law, not natural law but positive law. People of Somalia and the global south ways of living is interlinked with socio-cultural realities and religious elements that most legocentric find difficult to incorporate into their analysis of secularism and the division between state and religion. This is overtly a western tradition, which should be contained in its places of origin, the whole idea of secularism is place-specific. Given that Somalis emphasises the close link/overlap between law/religion any form of legal recognition of secularism in somalia, will shift in favour of religion - thereby endangering the laws supremacy as the secularist would argue. What we need my friend is to recognise a process which doest turn into a combat scenario between Islamic extremists/ and militant atheist. The prosperity and richness of Somalia's religious identity is testament to the assertion that religion is as strong as the law, often forming the law.

  16. From the outset I should say that rural romanticism is a dangerous thing, its a distortion of reality, since your so removed from the place in which you seek to build. Worst of all your suggesting transplanting silly western ideas of governance to the motherland. We are a people of culture, history and intellectuality. Westernisation does not equate to modernisation. We need to make our benchmark of governance. you ideas are foreign, by arguing for these things, you inexplicably admit to the the dominance of the white man over the rest of mankind. P.S - I particularly like your social policies. You remind me of a young Thomas Sankara. B.

  18. people dont disrespect people and call them names. this is their choice. let them in live in peace! Just yesterday, the french court ruled it could be unconstitutional to ban the burqa, if the govt goes ahead with their plans of banning the burqa. Basic freedoms will be undermined. This is positive.
  19. I think the fact that Somaliland has allowed Christians to live in their territory is indeed a positive move. People should be allowed to make their choices, there is no compulsion in relgion. In time, if these people are allowed to live in peace and Somaliland people show them their good islamic conducts and mannerism, they will become muslims. Its just that when people feel intimidated that they hang on to their beliefs. Whether christian or muslims, I believe the somaliland constitution protects people, or if not the case, should be amended to protect minorities.
  20. I dont see the problem with this ancient practice of marrying within your own family. I would, however be very concerned of the resultant consequences of developing health problems. Its a well-known fact that marrying your own cousins can cause Downs Syndrome and a variety of other serious conditions. Usually these types of marriage occur in rural areas but now that many countries in arabia and africa are urbanising, I think this practice will very gradually disappear as people embrace new lifestyles and ways of living.
