  1. BariNom - Now what is so wrong with your history bro....Is there anything wrong with the fact based quotation below?

The root of their territorial claims partly lies in the colonial period; Puntland is part of the Somali territory colonised by Italy, while Somaliland is a former British protectorate.

If you disputing the above then perhaps you can elaborate more and tell us who did the above and the root causes.

If I recal from my history lectures on the Scramble for Africa, Most of the lines where drawn by colonialist hence the problems that are apparent in Africa.

Celta Vigo 2-3 Arsenal: FT Report

    PA

Peerless in the Premiership, Arsenal are finally showing the potential to conquer the continent as they took a significant step towards the Champions League quarter-finals with a 3-2 win in Celta Vigo.

Robert Pires struck an 80th-minute winner in this last-16 first-leg tie as Arsenal secured their first victory on Spanish soil.

However, this match was essentially much Edu about something as the Brazilian midfielder struck the two goals which put Arsenal on course for their last 16 first leg success.

Not that the Arsenal fans were able to sing `there's only one Edu'. For there were, in fact, two of them on the pitch and both were 25-year-old Brazilians.

Even more amazingly, it was Celta Vigo's Edu who initially put the Spanish side level before Jose Ignacio struck their second equaliser on 64 minutes.

Indeed, while Arsenal have been something of a Jekyll and Hyde team in the competition this season, rarely have they shown both sides of their character in the same match.

Though they constantly looked a threat going forward, manager Arsene Wenger will be duly concerned at his side's uncharacteristic defensive lapses as they looked vulnerable in the air.

Other sides will punish Arsenal even more severely for such uncertainty, although they always retain the ability to outscore any opponents with their prolific attacking potential.

In the absence of Dennis Bergkamp, who does not fly, Jose Reyes had started alongside Thierry Henry for the first time in his Champions League debut.

The 20-year-old Spain international even had the first chance of the game, only to shoot straight at goalkeeper Pablo Cavallero from Henry's neat flick.

While Celta made most of the early running, with full-back Gael Clichy producing a fine covering tackle on former Aston Villa striker Savo Milosevic, Arsenal were ahead after 16 minutes, albeit with a stroke of considerable good fortune.

Pires' free-kick flew across the penalty area and was unconvincingly nodded goalwards by Arsenal midfielder Edu only to strike defender Juan Velasco.

The Brazilian then flung himself at the loose ball, catching Cavallero with a painful blow to his face as the ball deflected into the net, seemingly off defender Berizzo.

Cavallero needed lengthy treatment to a bloodied nose and forehead before play eventually resumed and it was not long before Celta were level.

Bizarrely, it was their own Edu who scored it on 26 minutes as he rose unchallenged to head past goalkeeper Jens Lehmann as Silvinho produced a pin-point free-kick delivery against his former team.

Arsenal were by no means at their most convincing and their normally solid defence was under severe strain as Lehmann had to dive full length to parry a fierce drive by Edu.

Celta also claimed a penalty when Silvinho charged onto Alexander Mostovoi's flick and plunged to the floor, but referee Anders Frisk ruled that Kolo Toure was more the victim than the perpetrator as he was left winded by the Brazilian.

Arsenal were fortunate not to fall behind just 30 seconds after the restart as Mostovoi's header thumped against the crossbar from Edu's inviting cross.

Jose Ignacio then burst into the penalty area and shot into Lehmann's midriff, while Edu continued to give 18-year-old Clichy a torrid time.

Arsenal were nevertheless starting to threaten on the break and while Cavallero parried an effort from Reyes, Henry skewed his follow-up effort wide.

The Gunners' Edu then seized the moment with a goal of sheer individual quality as he side-stepped his way past three opponents before steadying himself and curling a superb shot into the top corner.

Once again, however, Arsenal's lead did not last long, with Celta level for a second time after 64 minutes. Again, the danger came from a cross.

Jose Ignacio was left with far too much time and space to spin onto Fernandez Sergio's downward header from a corner and, although Lehmann got his fingers to the ball, it sneaked inside the post.

Back came Arsenal once again, though, with Pires and Henry combining to slice their way through the Celta Vigo defence with 10 minutes left before Pires finished with aplomb into the far corner.

It was by no means a convincing display but the result was all-important. The quarter-finals now surely beckon.

  3. So ma fellow Footie fan what are your thoughts about the European Championships and can you predict who is going to be victorious this time as all the teams are massive except for us the Gooners who have alot to prove but at the sametime we look to be more of athreat than most other time....case in one Inter being destroyed at their own backyard.

Oh we are actually looking to our Spanish connection to do the demolition of Celta.....

    allsportreyesleapjoychelsea.jpg

Wenger declared: "Jose has pace, movement and while he's still adapting to English game, he can feel completely at home over there.

"He has played against Celta Vigo many times before and I will ask him about them, even though we have seen them many times ourselves.

  4. We keep getting better and better by the minute. With ManU drawing with Leeds hmmm who knows what can happen next.

    Lehmann 7 Solid

Lauren 7 Caught out a couple of times, but raised his game in the second half.

    Campbell 7 Solid defensive display

Toure 7 Strong in the air today

Clichy 8 VERY good performance by our young LB. Good interceptions, very lively and still composed.

Gilberto 7 Worked hard, but should've scored.

Pires 6 Not up to his own high standards today.

Paddy 8 A terrible mistake led to Chelsea's goal, but the way Paddy took the game by the scruff of the neck was incredible.

Edu 8 Best player along with Paddy and Clichy. Strong in the tackle, imaginative passing, scored a goal, a very good all round performance.

Bergkamp 7 Brilliant pass for Paddy's goal, but tired a bit in the second half.

    Henry 6 Like Pires.....

  5. Ok before I start to comment on the issue of Polygamy, can some of you ladies answer the following questions.

    1. Is Polygamy Islamically accepetable or not? If yes why are you ladies disputing it?

    1. Why do women agree to marrying a man who is already married to 1,2 or 3 wives if it dis-pleases them so much?

    2. It takes two to tango and so how can the blame game be a mans fault only at all times when the ones who agree to the whole deal are the same women who complain after.

Polygamy has become an established part of traditional Islamic law and practice; Muslims are accustomed to accepting that a man's right to more than one wife is firmly established in the Qur'an and the Hadith. Polygamy (specifically polygamy, the marriage of one man to many women) is thus considered unquestionably moral, even though it is obviously unfair; only men are allowed the privilege of it. However, a close study of the Qur'an can enable one to see that the Islamic ideal of marriage is monogamous, with only husband-wife pairs. In fact, the Qur'anic stance on polygamy is the same as its stance on slavery; both are objectionable on ethical grounds, but tolerated due to the particular circumstances of Muhammad's community.

To begin, let us look at the Qur'anic verses relating to polygamous marriage:

If you fear that you will not act justly towards the orphans, marry such women as seem good to you, two, three, four; but if you fear you will not be equitable, then only one, or what your right hands own; so it is likelier you will not be partial.

    {Surah 4 (an-Nisa), verse 3}

It should be immediately apparent that the Qur'anic stance on marriage is more complex than the traditional rule of up to-four-wives-at-once. To begin with, a man is only allowed more than one wife if they can be treated equitably. The stated purpose of polygamy is for the sake of social justice: to enable society to "act justly towards the orphans". In the context of Muhammad's early Medina community this makes plenty of sense, as the widows and children of martyred Muslims had few options to fall back upon for survival other than remarriage. Since warfare against the Mecca opponents of Islam killed many of the male Muslims, it was necessary to allow their widows to remarry the surviving men. This would ensure that each widow and her children had a male to look out for their interests, without which their situation could have been difficult in the often patriarchal tribal society. This was especially important among the early Muslims of Medina, among whom much wealth was accumulated in the form of the spoils of battle and ransoms paid for enemies captured. Such wealth was controlled by the men who gained it in battle, and these were the ones who would have the means to provide for additional wives and children.

Polygamy is thus allowed to meet the specific needs of the early Muslim community at Medina. But what about in modern Muslim communities which have various institutions such as governmental and non-governmental agencies to look after the needs of destitute widows and orphans? The Qur'an simply does not provide any support for polygamy in this case. To resolve the question of whether or not polygamy is a universally applicable institution, we need to probe deeper into the Qur'an and discover whether it is ultimately moral. In this regard the following verse is important:

You will not be able to be equitable between your wives, be you ever so eager; yet do not be altogether partial so that you leave her, as it were, suspended.

    (Surah 4 (an-Nisa'), verse 129}

Read alongside the previous verse, it becomes obvious that the practice of polygamy is morally questionable. In stark contrast to the previous allowance for multiple wives who are treated equitably, here the Qur'an flatly states that equitable behavior is impossible. The implication is that monogamy, and not polygamy, is the ideal for Muslims.

Polygamy must then be viewed as a temporary phenomenon, allowed only due to the social needs of the Messenger's community. The Qur'anic stance on the ethical shortfalls of multiple marriages should result in their ultimate replacement by monogamy.

Traditional Muslim scholars have ignored the above possibility by treating only the verse permitting polygamy as legally valid. The other verse, implying that multiple marriages are immoral due to the impossibility of equitable treatment, was assumed to have no legal force. It was regarded only as an ethical injunction to encourage men to treat their wives well, even if they could not be completely fair. But this traditional interpretation misses the point. According to the Qur'an, the required equal treatment is impossible; thus polygamy is never completely ethical. Islamic law cannot be said to be "Islamic" if it does not fully incorporate Qur'anic ethics; thus polygamy cannot be universally permissible under Islamic law.

In discussing the ethics of marriage, we should realize that our commonplace perception of polygamy is profoundly influenced by our environment. On the one hand, the norm of industrial society has become monogamous marriage; thus the Islamic position seems oddly permissive in allowing a man more than one partner. Much anti-Muslim polemic has been directed against the 'sexual promiscuity' of the polygamous Muslim male. It is important to realize, however, that these laws were revealed under considerably different circumstances. In the context of pre-Islamic Arab society, the Qur'anic position represents a step toward monogamy rather than away from it. Before Islam, societal rules regarding sexuality and marriage were tribal in nature and relatively flexible. Both men and women were allowed multiple spouses; some of the types of "marriage" which prevailed were essentially approved forms of prostitution. A remnant of this permissive pre-Islamic ethic survives in the allowance in some Shi'i legal schools for temporary marriage (mut'a) whereby a couple can contract a marriage for an arbitrary fixed period, after which they are automatically divorced; the woman going her way with the bridal dowry, which cannot be returned. In this context, the Qur'anic legislation limited a woman to a single man and implied that monogamy was the moral ideal for men as well. The one-sidedness of the reform, initially limiting only polyandry (multiple husbands) and not polygamy (multiple wives), should be seen as an intermediate stage separating pre-Islamic sexual immorality and Islamic monogamy. Traditional Muslim legalists have been entirely concerned with the Qur'anic legal word on marriage, when the true issue should have been its moral position on sexuality.

Having said that don’t you guys think as Somalis and Muslims, and for the sake of our own propagation we should increase our UMMA and grow as a community especially since we have lost a lot of our people through war?

  6. Looking at todays Domestic violence across the world, you would think Somali husbands are probably the best compared to their counterparts in many other cultures including the Western one where most victims dont even survive the assaults on them. Somali husbands could have been harsh with their wives and all but then again Im sure the wives too gave as much as they got in some way or other. Infact the old men mostly didnt kick the daylights out of our fore mothers but could have abused them emotionally. If one compares that era with whats happening today around us, you would think our fore fathers where saints to say the least compared to the many murders taking place in the west on adaily basis.

Oh by the way the above chart can work both ways. Both Male and female commit violence and abuse of some sort or other.

  7. Loool Norf...Nostalgia wont do you any good bruv....but I can see where you come from. Bitter pill to swallow seing how Houlier is hoofin it. The Houllier game seems to be "pass it around at the back until approached by an opponent. Then hoof it up high and long to the smallest attacker in the League knowing he hasn't a prayer so the opposition get the ball. Then defend again until you get the ball back and the process starts all over again. Interesting variations on the theme include, when confronted by a 'Van Nistleroy' or King 'Henry' get ten red shirts into the Liverpool box, create confusion and hoof any loose ball as per above. Play the passing game only in your own half, another classic over the last two seasons. Any wide balls automatically go into touch, a cornerstone of the Houllier era. And, of course, buy in as many nationalities and cultures as possible to better team communication both on and off the field. .

  8. His full debut may have started in disaster but you can see why Wenger is the best manager in the land. Not many here thought he was agreat buy but boy did he make it up his past blunders with two great strikes. Reyes lit up Highbury with a brilliant double as holders Arsenal came from behind to beat Chelsea 2-1 and reach the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Van Nice to see you appreciate agood game.

Norf - Really sorry about the plight of Lpool. with the squad they have, they should do better.

  9. On the night Sir Alex Ferguson vowed Manchester United's off-field problems would not deflect his attention from regaining the Premiership title, Middlesbrough sauntered into Old Trafford and did it instead with a 3-2 win.

Joseph-Desire Job's 80th-minute strike condemned the Red Devils to their fifth defeat of the campaign and left them five points adrift of unbeaten Arsenal.

    what anight for the Gooners
