Algeria pledges transportation for peacekeepers to Somalia: official Algeria has promised to provide transportation for the deployment of African peacekeepers to Somalia, said African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson Alpha Oumar Konare Monday. "Algeria has announced that it is ready to transport Ugandan and Rwandese troops to Somalia," Konare said when addressing the opening session of the 8th AU summit. The chairman thanked the North African country, saying that this is an example that "Africa can be in a position to show its responsibility." Konare urged a rapid deployment of peacekeepers to the Horn of Africa country, whose transitional federal government roused its powerful rival Islamist forces in a lightning battle under the Ethiopian military support. "The more we delay in deploying the troops, the more risks for worsening situation," he said. So far only Uganda, Nigeria, Malawi and Ghana have announced that they would contribute around 4,000 troops to the peacekeeping forces, half of the number that the AU has proposed. "We have approached other countries and are waiting for response,"said Konare. He expressed satisfaction with Ethiopian troops' withdrawal from Somalia, but cautioned that "if the troops of the African Mission in Somalia are not deployed quickly then chaos will descend." President calls for Somali Reconciliation conference inside Somalia!
General Duke replied to Fiqikhayre's topic in Politics
The conference is to bring the Somali people together, to bring the elders, religious leaders, civil society and press home the aim of the government of creating a new peaceful Somalia. Should be to safe the defeated group? No. Is it to make some failed politicians happy? No. Bring the people, kiss and make up and lets move forward. -
Geedi and Aydeeds position has nothing to do with reconciliation of clans. The TFG will not change but the clans will be brought together inside Somalia to work things out, kiss and make up.

President calls for Somali Reconciliation conference inside Somalia!
General Duke replied to Fiqikhayre's topic in Politics
Somali president to host reconciliation conference Somali President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed is to host a national reconciliation conference in a bid to turn the page on 16 years of bloodshed in his country, EU commissoner Louis Michel has said. Yusuf, who took up power in Mogadishu a month ago, told Michel of his intentions to stage the gathering in the next few weeks during a breakfast meeting at the ongoing African Union summit in Addis Ababa. "I am impressed by his decision to call a conference of reconciliation," Michel, the commissioner for development, told reporters after their meeting. "It (the conference) could happen in two or three weeks," he added. Yusuf, who appeared alongside Michel after the meeting, declined to comment on the conference and cancelled a press briefing that he was scheduled to hold immediately afterwards. His only comment to reporters after the Michel meeting was that "we fully understood each other and we agreed to work together". The European Union had made clear earlier this month that it was only prepared to contribute 15 million euros to an African Union peacekeeping force due to be deployed to Somalia as long as Yusuf's interim administration took concrete steps towards reconciliation. Michel said Yusuf had met the EU's precondition by deciding to convene the reconciliation conference. "In my opinion, all the conditions are fulfilled" for the EU to now release the funds for the AU force, he said. The interim administration, which was formed in 2004, had been confined to a provincial backwater until late last month when Ethiopia intervened on its behalf and helped oust a coalition of Islamist hardliners from Mogadishu. The United States, United Nations and African Union have all urged the interim government to reach out to rival factions in Somalia, including moderate Islamists. Before the Islamists took power in Mogadishu last June, rival warlords had been slugging it out among themselves for the last 15 years and reduced large parts of the city to rubble. Michel said that Yusuf had indicated a desire for "a very broad reconciliation" and the conference would include "the religious authorities who are ready to leave violence". In a speech Monday to mark the opening of the two-day summit, AU commission chief Alpha Oumar Konare said the interim government should reach out to the Islamists "except those who are fighting and killing for holy war". Since the the 1991 ouster of dictator Mohamed Siad Barre, more than 14 internationally-backed initiatives have failed to restore a lasting and effective government in Somalia. Yusuf's government, formed in Kenya in 2004 after more than two years of peace talks, is yet to exert control across the nation of about 10 million people. Source: AFP -

^^^No one pulled anyone on the ground, another myth from the defeated lot. -
Building a national army takes time, the reality of Somalia even makes that fact more difficult. The Ethiopians play a role but not the major one. The TFG has the support of the grass roots, the majority, the unarmed, the down troden in these areas. They do have 15000 troops who will be insha Allah the foundation for the 40-60,000 new national army. Who will no doubt secure the country as the former army did.
-
^^^Saxib, you are making accusations, the clan courts attacked the TFG and were routed, hwoever no clan has been thus far targeted, no clans are fighting due to the failure of the clan courts. You have been unable to back up your claim, the clan courts organisation has been decimated, but so far no single clan has been targeted. The TFG has empowered many clans, maybe this is the reason for all the "outrage" specially the unarmed and dispossesed, the lower Shabbele, and the Jubai's is a simple example. The fact that the TFG ahs created an admin for Mogadishu, which the courts wre unable to achieve, due to clan competion, and that this admin has the support of the majority of that cities population also further damages your claim. In Afgoyee, the locals are in control. The reconicilation will continue as the TFG gets stronger, it is after all the peoples government. Rome was not built in a day

Mayor of Mogadishu visiting the old port and sea port...
-
^^^lol. The foreign troops will leave when the TFG troops are trained. Simple really. So should not one support the recruitment and rapid training of our armed forces rather than trying to set up yet another "reconciliation talks" with the view of saving an individuals political career?
-
^^^Ok, no one is doubting this but kindly answer this question, which clan has it failed to reconcile with? Dont side step the theme and in my opinion the aim of your thread.. Kindly back up the claim, which clan has it failed to reconcile with and thus resulted in its failure?
-
^^^There is peace in Somaliland and Puntland, but dont say there was peace in the south, there wa a state of war in the south, killings and expansion by one group against another until the clan courts lost. What political solution are you talking about? Kindly be clear.
