Ethiopia defends Somaliland deal at UN as Somalia and Egypt condemn agreement Monday September 30, 2024 From left to right: Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister Taye Atske-Selassie, Somalia’s Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, and Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty deliver speeches at the United Nations General Assembly, addressing tensions over Ethiopia's Somaliland agreement and regional security concerns. Mogadishu (HOL) — Ethiopia's Foreign Minister Taye Atske-Selassie took the podium at the United Nations General Assembly in New York to defend his country's informal agreement with Somaliland. The pact, signed earlier this year, has drawn fierce criticism from neighbouring Somalia, but Ethiopia maintains it is a legitimate effort to promote regional development. In his address, Taye reiterated Ethiopia's commitment to multilateralism and cooperation in the Horn of Africa, framing the agreement as part of a broader strategy for shared prosperity. "Ethiopia's memorandum of understanding with Somaliland is based on the existing political dispensation in Somalia. Our objective is shared growth and prosperity in the region, and we reject the unfounded allegations made against Ethiopia regarding this agreement," Taye stated. He urged Somalia to focus on collaboration to address the more pressing threat of terrorism in the region. "We encourage Somalia to work with us to eliminate the terrorist threats that plague the region," he added. advertisements Taye also emphasized Ethiopia's contributions to regional security, highlighting its peacekeeping role in Somalia. "The region has made strides in degrading terrorist networks like al-Shabaab, thanks to the resilience of the Somali people and the sacrifices made by regional nations, including Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda," he said. He expressed confidence that the government of Somalia would soon acknowledge Ethiopia's role in supporting Somalia's liberation from terrorist groups. However, Somalia’s Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre used his own speech at the General Assembly to issue a stern rebuke, accusing Ethiopia of attempting to annex Somali territory under the guise of securing sea access. "Somalia currently faces a serious threat from Ethiopia's recent actions which flagrantly violate our territorial integrity," Barre declared. "Ethiopia's attempt to annex part of Somalia under the guise of securing sea access is both unlawful and unnecessary." Egypt's Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty also addressed the General Assembly, expressing concerns over Ethiopia's actions in the region. While primarily focusing on the longstanding Nile River dispute, Abdelatty linked Ethiopia's management of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) to its agreement with Somaliland. "Ethiopia's unilateral decisions not only violate international law but also jeopardize the unity and sovereignty of neighbouring nations," Abdelatty stated. He accused Ethiopia of disregarding the interests of other countries in its pursuit of national projects. "Anyone who believes Egypt will compromise on threats to our national security is gravely mistaken," he warned. Egypt, which relies heavily on the Nile River, views the GERD as a potential threat to its water security. By connecting this issue to Ethiopia's dealings with Somaliland, Egypt signals a growing concern over Addis Ababa's approach to international agreements and neighbourly relations. Ethiopia remains steadfast in its position. "Our intentions are not to undermine any nation's sovereignty but to pursue mutually beneficial partnerships," Taye asserted at the UN. He added that Ethiopia has recently entered into similar agreements with other countries, aiming to boost regional trade and development. The diplomatic friction comes as the Horn of Africa faces multiple challenges, including security threats from extremist groups, humanitarian crises, and complex inter-state relations. Ethiopia's defence of its foreign policies at the UN highlights the nation's desire to assert its role as a regional leader while navigating international scrutiny. Analysts note that Egypt's involvement suggests an effort to rally international support against what it perceives as Ethiopia's overreach.

Xaaji Xunjuf replied to Che -Guevara's topic in Politics
Ofcourse ina cagjar him self wants to be. Prime minister of Ethiopia hence why he loves Ethiopia he understood that secession couldn’t work so he is not I think blindly support abiye but wants to be his successor and it is only smart Amhara do not want galla pm. Galla do not want amhara pm. Tigray don’t want galla or Amhara pm.. so that leaves room if Ethiopia is to be reconstructed. That it has a Somali prime minister. Now let’s say this happens it would be something the least intelligent clan of the Somali people got the two most important positions. Prime minister of Ethiopia and prime minister of Somalia . -

A New Cold war has emerged Between Somaliland and Somalia
Xaaji Xunjuf replied to Xaaji Xunjuf's topic in Politics
Egypt urges citizens to leave Somaliland over security concerns Sunday September 22, 2024 FILE - Passengers wait to board a Daalo Airlines flight at Berbera Airport in Somaliland, 2013. © AP Mogadishu (HOL) — Egypt has reportedly issued an urgent advisory for all Egyptian nationals in Somaliland to leave the region immediately, citing worsening security conditions. The statement, published on Sunday by Egyptian news outlets, urged citizens to depart as soon as possible through Hargeisa International Airport. "We urge all Egyptian nationals not to travel to the Somaliland region of the Federal Republic of Somalia, given the impact of the unstable security situation on their safety,” the Egyptian Embassy to Somalia said in a statement. It added that the region's instability limits the embassy's ability to provide consular services. advertisements This evacuation advisory comes as tensions mount in the Horn of Africa, following a contentious agreement signed in January between Somaliland and Ethiopia. The deal included leasing part of its Red Sea coastline to Ethiopia for military and commercial use in exchange for Somaliland's formal recognition. The move was immediately met with backlash. Several Arab League nations, including Egypt, have voiced their opposition, citing concerns over Somalia's territorial integrity. In August, Egypt and Somalia further solidified their military relationship by signing a defence cooperation protocol. During a press conference, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi reaffirmed Egypt's backing of Somalia's sovereignty. "Somalia is a sovereign member of the Arab League, and we stand with them to ensure their security," he declared. Somalia's President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has openly criticized Ethiopia's involvement in Somaliland, accusing Addis Ababa of violating Somalia's sovereignty. Beyond the Red Sea agreement, Somalia also accused Ethiopia of shipping weapons to the Puntland region in northern Somalia, a move Mogadishu condemned as a serious violation of its territorial rights. Somaliland, however, has remained defiant, accusing Egypt of destabilizing Somalia through its weapons delivery. In a statement last month, Somaliland claimed the right to enter into such agreements without Mogadishu's approval and reaffirmed its commitment to the deal with Ethiopia. Adding to the strained relations, Somaliland authorities recently shut down an Egyptian-owned library in Hargeisa. Analysts believe this symbolic gesture is a direct response to Egypt's increasing military support for Somalia's federal government. -

This is a bold statement wauw strange what does he mean we lost first opportunity during miniliq they didn’t couldn’t capture Eritrea due to Italians there before that there were Turks there before there Tigrinya kings and lords always feuded with. Amhara kings and chiefs . Ethiopia never had any access to the sea through out the history . So what is there to change . By the way does this mean the talks in turkey are dead

Yes che has been very consistent and ur correct he started supporting the bunker govt in 2012 2013 i think when sheikh dalxiis was president he was a bit on cross roads u had xisbal xasuuq alshabaab going on a rampage It was very difficult to keep on supporting the youth ,the hotel govt of sheikh dalxiis didn’t have allot credibility among Somalis and also not in the eyes of che . Though he remained consistent in his opposition of opposing Ethiopias military incursions in Somalia during the war on terror despite colonel yey Sharing a clan ancestry with che he remained committed to the cause to fighting the Ethiopians during the wars in 2007 and 2008 and had heated debate with our very resident pirate now turned politician mr general duke , so I have to give him that he build a good track record there and i am sure he is one of the very few I can say his opposition to Somaliland quest for statehood is not tribally motivated so yeah kuddos to him
