  1. Berbera Corridor to benefit from new European strategy for investing in Africa. The initiative is part of Global Gateway The Strategic Corridors are an important part of the EU 's Africa-Europe Global Gateway investment package. 2The initiative is funded by the EU’s Neighborhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument (NDICI), also known as Global Europe. Global Gateway 1 is the EU’s answer to China’s new Silk Road. In addition, the Middle Kingdom is building infrastructure almost worldwide, much of it in Africa 1 . The criticism of this: Projects are often not sustainable and the orders go almost exclusively to Chinese companies. In contrast to this, Global Gateway is intended to consciously promote sustainable infrastructure - both in terms of environmental protection and financing. In addition, the companies should compete fairly, so that European companies also have opportunities. Investments in Africa’s infrastructure are urgently needed to improve the living conditions of the population and make the continent more competitive. Analysts assume that more than 100 billion US dollars per year would have to be invested in additional infrastructure in Africa.
  2. Somaliland & Djibouti sign contracts for The road linking the 2 countries. It takes 11 hours to travel from Hargeisa to Djibouti by road (dirt road). When the new road is completed, that will reduce to just 3 hours. A weekend gataway to Djibouti or an escape from the scorching sun to the cool breeze of Hargeisa or Borama will now be possible for thousands of travellers and business people.

  12. Since Abiy Ahmed took power, there is an increasing visible presence of Amhara & Oromo in Jigjiga. The Amhara are specially very violent towards Somali citizens in and around Jigjiga. It is very common to see Somali men/women getting abused by Xabashi men in middle of Jigjiga market, sometimes with no reasons at all. All the fertile farming lands around Jigjiga are owned by Amhara farmers.
  13. Next up, Puntland had high hopes of striking oil, but it seems their chances was a stab in the dark. With no much of seismic data to go by and guide, two oil wells that were drilled in Puntland turned out to only contain H2O rather than Oil. There is only so much financial lost that a small Oil outfit could bare. Africa Oil pulled out of Puntland in 2015.
  14. Ethiopia cancelled contract to the Chinese Company after 5 years of no action. ------ https://www.upstreamonline.com/field-development/ethiopia-loses-patience-with-china-s-poly-gcl-and-cancels-gas-fields-contract/2-1-1305118
  15. As the race to export Somali Oil & Gas is on. I thought, making a dedicated page for all the news related to this is a good idea. So here its. Ethiopia's Somali region was the first region to drill commercial well. However, it seems this has hit a huge roadblock. The company that was supposed to take the Oil to commercial markets seems to have run into financial problems. They cannot get finances for the Pipe that carries the crude Oil from the well to the Port of Djibouti. Eventhough Berbera Port is about 50% closer to the Oil field, for political reasons the Chinese want to send it through Djibouti. This means going through mountainous regions around Jigjiga area and into Siti district. If they went the Berbera route, it is all flat land all the way to Berbera with just small hills in between.
  16. banaan ayuu ka helay. They didn't give Liz Truss another chance. Giving finance ministry to Kwasi Kwarteng was a huge and costly mistake. Rishi will face a huge racist conservative base. He won't survive the next election.

  18. Just looking at their twitter feed, the excitement and celebrations is unbelievable. They got the signature and they transferred the 7 million dollars to the vultures in Mogadishu. I can't help but feel sorry for anyone who felt for these scammers. They even tweeted about Salahley Oil discovery. Off-shore oil is not cheap. And certainly it is not something an off-shoot group of no-bodies like Coastline Exploration can pull off. Just look south in Kenya, they spend 10 years looking for Off-shore oil and they found nothing, spending hundreds of millions of dollars.
  19. Trade & Business are universal. They are attracted by 1. Fees/Charges they pay 2. Quality of Service (including time, ease of doing business) 3. Policy/Politics. It is going to be a given that Bosaso will lose businesses, specially the Mudug businesses who had to track their goods on longer distances. Garacad may also win some businesses from Mogadishu Port specialy from GalMudug. However, this depends on how price and politics. With regards to Ethiopia, this is a far fetched dream. Livestock from Somali Region go to Berbera Port, not because it is closer, but because the market exists. Unless Garacad businesses compete on the market with the deep pocketed Hargeisa & Burco traders, there is little chance they will have any dent on this trade. The other interesting aspect to this is how Garowe will react to a further eroding of its state coffers. We know from the Financial Reports the income from Bosaso Port has been declining for the last number of years. So it will be interesting how Garowe authority reacts to Bosaso income diminishing even further and having to share port fees in Garacad with private investors.
  20. The old port was designed to accommodate US military ships with draft clearance of up to 15m. For example, the US Navy "USNS Ponchatoula (T-AO-148)" docked at the port in early 1980s. This ship has 11m draft clearance. However, since 1990s the old Port has not been maintained to its former standards. So currently only ships upto 10m draft are allowed to dock. A dredging and repairs works are scheduled in the next few years. The newer Container Terminal port can accommodate Mother container Ships with upto 18m draft.
