HARGEISA--Somaliland’s President Musa Bihi Abdi and and the main opposition leaders met at the presidential palace Hargeisa on Sunday. First of all, the Head of State and the two main opposition leaders have agreed that they work towards maintaining peace in the first place internally and externally. The leaders of Somaliland have also reached a common understanding on holding upcoming parliament and local council elections on the agreed date. Foreign minister Dr. Sa’ad Ali Shire said that Somaliland has made a major achievement in the country’s foreign policy and its diplomatic front. The FM made the remarks during an interview he conducted with Geeska Afrika, a local Somali paper in Hargeisa, Somaliland capital yesterday. Dr. Sa’ad Ali Shire embarked on two week long trip to UK and Ethiopia where he met with African Union officials in the sidelines of the African Union Summit which has been recently wrapped in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa. Issues that the FM spoke during the lengthy interview, the minister spoke about the airspace management, the stalled resumption of Somaliland and Somalia dialogue and Somalia’s president Farmajo’s last attempt to secure that Mr. Abdisalan Hadliye, Somalia’s ex-FM would clinch AU’s top IGAD post. Q: What are your major achievements that you have done to the foreign policy? The FM has reiterated that he has made all his efforts to rebuild the ministry and establish functioning representative offices which have been fully furnished while many others have been nominated. The FM has asserted that once they meet with foreign dignitaries that the ministry presents writings on Somaliland’s history and its assertion for statehood. The minister has added that the history justifies Somaliland’s right to be recognized as an independent country which legally right. The minister has stated that based on all leverages that he embarked that he spread Somaliland’s case to the world during his two years tenure as FM. Q: What has impeded Somaliland to be internally recognized as it embraced multi party politics and held free and fair elections? The minster responded that it has become a fact that the world is fully knowledge to Somaliland and further added that the world has become fully aware of the huge difference between Somaliland and Somalia. Somaliland is well known for tranquility which has maintained its law and order and has embraced democracy which is thriving well. The FM has declared that the recently free and fair presidential polls has elevated Somaliland’s status in the eyes of the globe. The minister remarked that 14 elections took place in the African continent and despite Somaliland which is unrecognized, the presidential election held in last year has become the only credible poll that took place in the continent. Dr. Sa’ad has asserted that Somaliland has done a miracle that the world has taken aback. Q: What could you tell us about your visit to Addis Ababa which coincided with AU summit? The FM said that it is true that Somaliland is part of the African Union since it is not internationally recognized. The minister went on to say that he met with dozens of ministers, ten ambassadors, foreign dignitaries and European Union officials. Dr. Sa’ad has said that all the officials that they have met has commended Somaliland’s democracy and holding free and fair presidential elections. He said that they have urged to consolidate our unity, observe our peace and democracy. Somaliland’s FM has said that the talks between Somalia and Somaliland will resume soon but said the date and the venue and those who are about to attend have not been decided as far as the dialogue is concerned. Speaking on the claim that Somalia took over the control of airspace management, the FM said that the issue is still for discussion between Somalia and Somaliland. He also talked about Farmo’s bid to seek the top position of IGAD which he failed and the minister said that Somaliland can only be represented and held accountable to those they have elected. The hit “Barbar” song has amassed over two million views since hitting youtube in December, but the lyrics of the song were stolen. Mowliid Curjin who is claiming that he wrote the lyrics is not the actual person composed the song, according to Hadhwanaagnews (HWN) investigation. The original lyrics of the song belong to Abwaan Yusuf Maanshoo of Djibouti, the tiny Africa nation. He deserves the credit for the song because of his creativity. On a video HWN posted its website, is showing, in 2004, Abwaan Yusuf reciting by verbatim the Barbar poem at a ceremony in Ali Sabeih, Djibouti. According to Yusuf, Djiboutien artists were the first Somali poets who created a Rhyme based lyrics for Somali Poetry similar to Arabic and English poetry. Somali poetry is based on metric and alliteration.I am not an expert on Somali literature, but anyone interested the structure of Somali poetry could read the works of late Abwaan Mohamed Hashi Dhamac “Gaariye” and Abdillahi Diriye Gulied on that subject. For Barbar poem, the last word of each line of the lyrics ends with the sound “R”. For example, Somali words like Qurqur, Sarsar, Dardar, Barbar, and so on, are keys or what Abwaan Yusuf called passwords for the entire song or the poem. He called his new genre of Somali poetry “Tidcan” . After over a decade, Mowliid Curjin, a scam artist and cheater, who lives in Toronto, knowingly just substituted few words of Yusuf’s original poem, but kept the key words of the song and pass it off as his own song. However, by keeping those passwords, he plagiarized the lyrics, according to Yusuf. What is more disgusting, instead of giving credit the contribution of Yusuf made to our literature, in interview with the VOA Somali service, Mowliid claimed that he was the first Somali artist who created the Rhyme based Somali lyrics, and wrote the song for his wife, which was totally misleading, if not completely false. I would like to know, why is Mowliid stealing Abwaan Yusuf’s work? Nothing wrong with using other artist’s work, but there was a fair way Mowliid could have used Abwaan Yusuf’s genre and lyrics. Since Abwaan Yusuf came out to fight back the person stealing his creative work, Liiban Jama the producer of the song and Mowliid, have not denied yet his challenge and they went under the radar. Unlike American artists, Somali-poets don’t earn living from their creative work.They have been also repeatedly victims of copy rights violations and have been ripped off for decades due to the lack of copy rights protection at home and abroad. Most of the artists do not have the means to fight back because they live in Africa and lack resources to take legal action. Stealing other artist’s creative work without his or her authorization is not only wrong but it is illegal. What Mowliid did is a complete violation of U.S. and Canadian laws that protect copy rights and intellectual property. Even in early Somali pastoral society that heavily relied on oral poetry as means of communications to disseminate information because there was no postal service, had un written customary copy right law. For instance, it was mandatory when a reciter memorizes text of a poem from a poet, to state the name of the poet for each recitation. Failing give to credit for the poet was regarded dishonesty. And for the reciters to substitute, delete or add to new materials to the poem were prohibited. But today, due to lack of creativity, honesty or laziness, Somali scam artists in North America and Europe, like Mowliid, Stealing or plagiarizing other artist’s creative work have become a means for them to make living or to gain instant fame. It is clear that Mowliid Curjin plagiarized the lyrics. He should do the right thing: Give credit the original writer of the song and move on. And, If Mr. Mowliid does not have the creativity or the skills to compose songs; he should pursue a different career. Enough is enough. It’s unfair for artists like Yusuf who worked so hard and had contributed Somali literature for their creative work to be stolen. The whole Barbar song is a sham.We should not reward scam artists and cheaters.I have come to the conclusion that Abwaan Yusuf had created the original lyrics of the song. Therefore, he should not only get credit for the song but also he should at least receive a share whatever revenue the song might generate. Doing so is right thing and the protection creative Somali artists like Abwaan Yusuf deserve. IPV prevalence is likely higher during humanitarian crises, when women and girls, men and boys, are more vulnerable to violence in the family and community, and during displacement. In fact, a growing body of evidence suggest that IPV is the most common form of violence in humanitarian settings but that it often receives less attention than non-partner sexual violence during conflict or humanitarian crisis. Evidence suggests there are a number of factors which contribute to the increase in violence, in particular within the family unit: the trauma of displacement, disruption of gender norms, additional stresses due to loss of livelihood, and isolation from community and family support systems. Recent evidence reviewshighlight the limited evidence on effective IPV prevention interventions for the humanitarian context, and emphasize the need for development and evaluation of IPV interventions for these settings. But targeted solutions to address and prevent IPV are particularly challenging in humanitarian settings such as refugee or internally displaced persons (IDP) camps, where there is an emphasis on service provision rather than long-term programming and typical prevention programs. Technology-based solutions to address GBV have received growing interest because of their potential to reach large numbers of individuals quickly and non-intrusively, yet have limited application in settings where internet, mobile phone networks or access to FM radio is limited or non-existent. Photo credit: Samuel Tewolde Together with colleagues Dr. Jennifer Scott and Dr. Negussie Deyessa, our team’s ongoing project, with recent funding from the World Bank Group and the Sexual Violence Research Initiative, aims to develop and pilot test an innovative, technology-based solution to prevent IPV that is not dependent on internet or mobile phone connectivity. The project is being implemented in Dollo Ado Refugee Camps in Ethiopia, home to an estimated 212,000 Somali refugees who are displaced as a result of war and drought. Previous research conducted by our team in 2016 identified the social and cultural drivers of IPV among the refugee population in Dollo Ado, including changing gender roles, early and forced marriage, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), and an increase in use of the ubiquitous stimulant plant called khat (Catha edulis)which has been triggered by displacement. The first stage of the new study will involve additional qualitative research to further understand IPV and its drivers, social networks and key influencers, as well as the main channels of communication and information sharing in this Somali refugee setting. In the current pre-implementation stage, we are finalizing study protocols and instruments which will be submitted for ethical review at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the Addis Ababa University institutional review boards (IRBs). Our multi-disciplinary team of physicians, academics, practitioners and journalists from Fondation Hirondelle, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Addis Ababa University School of Public Health and Women and Health Alliance International (WAHA) Ethiopia, will work with the Somali refugee population to create a series of user-developed podcasts on IPV, which can be easily shared via multiple channels in safe environments. Men and women in the camps will be trained in digital storytelling and podcasting. They will develop podcast content relevant for their context and in the local language, with messaging that they believe will transform gender norms and behaviors in their community. Photo credit: Jennifer Scott Empowering people to share stories and solutions, these user-developed podcasts create opportunities for community-based dialogue and advocacy to sensitively challenge and transform inequitable gender and social norms and to ultimately decrease prevalence of IPV. This unique participatory approach and human-centered technological innovation enables individuals to create solutions to improve their own lives and communities. The podcasts will be broadcast at “listening centers,” safe spaces where the target population usually gathers within the camp, and will also be available for download and peer-to-peer sharing via Bluetooth technology. The podcasts will be pilot tested to assess participant satisfaction and comprehension, as well as relevance of the content and the approach. Overcoming the “digital divide” to address what is a taboo topic for many is not without its challenges. For many project participants, they will be learning to use digital recording technology for the first time, discovering the power of radio podcasting through a bespoke ‘network’ created through peer to peer sharing and Listening Centres. Equipment and technology will be well adapted to camp environment, solar powered and sturdy, to provide a sustainable utility after the project ends. We hope that by addressing important evidence gaps, and by testing the feasibility of low cost tools designed by refugees, for their communities, the project outcomes will have important relevance for programming, research, and policy related to IPV in humanitarian settings, and that the data and tools can also be used to inform IPV prevention interventions in low and middle-income countries.
