Suicide attacks on US-led troops in Iraq permitted: Sunni leader Suicide attacks on the US-led coalition in Iraq are "permitted under (Islamic) religious law," the sheikh of Al-Azhar, the highest Sunni Muslim spiritual authority, Mohammed Sayed Tantawi, said here Saturday. "Martyr operations against the invading forces are permitted under religious law," he said, quoted by the official MENA news agency. Tantawi described the invasion of Iraq to oust the regime of Saddam Hussein as "an unjust aggression". "Whoever attacks others, spilling blood, harming the other's honour and land is a terrorist," he added, referring to the US-led coalition. Tantawi, however, said the US-led war was not a crusade against Islam since many Christian nations and religious leaders, including Pope John Paul II, have opposed it. He also indirectly criticised the Iraqi and the Kuwaiti leaders. Saddam Hussein should have accepted a call from the United Arab Emirates last month to resign in order to prevent war, he said. "Had this initiative gone through, it would have preserved the blood of many Muslims and we would not be seeing the massacres under way against the Iraqi people." Tantawi described Iraq's August 1990-February 1991 occupation of Kuwait as a "terrorist" act. He also criticised Kuwait, without actually naming the emirate, saying "when an Arab country enlists the help of foreign forces against another Arab country for no reason, this is treason to religion." On March 27, Syria's Grand Mufti Sheikh Ahmad Kaftaro, the country's top Muslim religious authority, called for suicide bombings against US and British troops in Iraq. Islam universally bans suicide as a crime against oneself but it allows it in defence of Muslims and their land, and celebrates as "martyrs" those who make the sacrifice. There have been two suicide attacks against coalition forces since the war began on March 20. One of them killed four US soldiers and the second three others, according to the US military. http://www.spacewar.com/2003/030405160748.bkz0qayd.html

Famine-struck N Koreans 'eating children' By Mark Nicol (Filed: 08/06/2003) http://www.dailytelegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2003/06/08/wkor08.xml&sSheet=/news/2003/06/08/ixworld.html Cannibalism is increasing in North Korea following another poor harvest and a big cut in international food aid, according to refugees who have fled the stricken country. Aid agencies are alarmed by refugees' reports that children have been killed and corpses cut up by people desperate for food. Requests by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to be allowed access to "farmers' markets", where human meat is said to be traded, have been turned down by Pyongyang, citing "security reasons". Anyone caught selling human meat faces execution, but in a report compiled by the North Korean Refugees Assistance Fund (NKRAF), one refugee said: "Pieces of 'special' meat are displayed on straw mats for sale. People know where they came from, but they don't talk about it." The NKRAF, an aid body set up in China five years ago which helps to smuggle food and medicines into parts of North Korea off-limits to WFP officials, interviewed 200 refugees for the report. "If a funeral takes place during the day and the burial is performed that evening, the grave may be dug open and the body stolen before morning," said one refugee. Another witness, named only as Lee, 54, said he feared that his missing grandsons, aged eight and 11, had been killed for food. As he searched widely for them, they boys' friends said they had vanished near a market. Mr Lee said police who raided a nearby restaurant found body parts. The business's owners were shot. Gerald Bourke, the WFP's representative in Beijing, said it was difficult for his organisation to substantiate the reports of cannibalism as they were unable to get to the markets. "As in any desperately poor country, it is something we might stumble on," he said. "It's not just a problem for us, but also our donors." Because of the food shortages, many people were having to survive on nine ounces of rations a day - less than half the recommended minimum daily intake. North Korea's ability to feed itself has been hit by floods, deforestation and lack of farm fertilisers and equipment. The WFP says Japan provided 500,000 tons of food aid in 2001, making it the biggest donor, but sent nothing last year. Food aid from America has been cut from 340,000 tons in 2001 to 40,000 tons so far this year. Washington has pledged to send a further 60,000 tons if Pyongyang lifts restrictions on the operations of agencies such as the WFP.

Here is something that might be another American hoax. Reports are coming out saying "Chemical Ali is not dead at all". lol. =============== WASHINGTON (June 5) - U.S. officials had been confident that a coalition airstrike killed one of Iraq's most notorious officials, the man nicknamed ``Chemical Ali.'' Now, they are not so sure. Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Thursday that interrogations of Iraqi prisoners indicated Ali Hassan al-Majid might be alive. Myers and Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld had said on April 7 they believed an airstrike on a house in southern Iraq had killed al-Majid. They showed reporters video of laser-guided bombs obliterating the house where a tipster told coalition forces al-Majid was staying. ``We believe that the reign of terror of Chemical Ali has come to an end. To Iraqis who have suffered at his hand, particularly in the last few weeks in that southern part of the country, he will never again terrorize you or your families,'' Rumsfeld said at the time. An officer with the British military in Basra, Maj. Andrew Jackson, also said on that day that a body believed to be al-Majid was found in the rubble after the airstrike. Myers and Rumsfeld, speaking to reporters after briefing members of Congress, did not elaborate on what they called ``speculation'' that al-Majid may have survived. Al-Majid, a cousin of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, once ran Iraq's armed forces. His opponents called him ``Chemical Ali'' for his role in 1988 chemical weapons attacks that killed thousands of Kurds in northern Iraq. He also has been linked to the bloody crackdown on Shiites in southern Iraq after their uprising following the 1991 Gulf War. He was governor of Kuwait during Iraq's seven-month occupation of its neighbor in 1990-1991 - an occupation that ended with Iraq's defeat in the Gulf War. Al-Majid was a warrant officer and motorcycle messenger in the army before Saddam's Baath party led a coup in 1968. He was promoted to general and served as defense minister from 1991-95, as well as a regional party leader.

Somalia prepares to choose a new president Somalia, Politics, 5/31/2003 The Somali tribes are preparing to elect the leader for the United Somalia Republic party, Abdul Nour Ahmad Dourman, as a president of the country in succession for the current President Abdi Qasem Salad Hassan whose term of office expires in July. Dourman who has US citizenship returned back to Makadishu and announced he is carrying a new project for rebuilding and unifying Somalia. Before his return to Somalia, he made contact with several Arab leaders and officials in the USA. In a press statement, Dourman stressed his determination to unify all lands of Somalia, noting that his policy to achieve this is represented in having a citizen referendum in which all Somalis can take part to determine the shape of the state. The leader of the united Somali Republic party explained he had started internal consultations to arrange the process of assuming the authority. He rejected considering his pursuit to assume authority as a "peaceful coup," rather an attempt to fill the political vacuum in the country. He said that everyone knows that the previous government was a provisional one and did not have enough of the confidence of the Somali leaders, noting the dangers of the current situation in Somalia. http://www.arabicnews.com/ansub/Daily/Day/030531/2003053101.html

The new government is trying to get a good grip on power and with that always comes the un-fettered crackdown on anyone the government sees as being involved in "malfeasance". It is very common in Africa. -
