Flood of Foreign Workers Vs the Local youth In Mogadishu

Recommended Posts

Romans Onyango is the site engineer at one of Mogadishu's luxury apartment buildings under construction. While there are no official numbers, the Kenyan national is one of the many foreign workers attracted to the Somali capital by lucrative contracts.

"There are so many Kenyans coming here - people from all over Africa: Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, everywhere," he say

With development on the upswing, the on-rush of foreign laborers isn't sitting well with some locals.

"Most of the Mogadishu youths are not happy with the increase of foreign staff," says Mogadishu resident Abdinur Mohamed. "The government should create a law that dictates at least 80% of the staff in all sectors of the economy to be from the local community".

According to Mohamed, it's a sentiment shared by most young Somalis, many of whom were unable to secure the necessary qualifications or training due to the country's ongoing conflict. Even recent graduates are facing few job prospects, and some are demanding limited-duration work permits foreign experts.

"There is nothing wrong with bringing foreign expertise, but let them stay for a specific period, like a year," says Mohamed. "Within that year, let them train Somali staff so that they may be able to take up these roles in the future."

Waa arin yaab leh. At the same time, Somalidu waa mashaqeestayaal.

They rather sit and drink tea and complain about everything, instead of doing what's necessary.

Even dibadaha, most Somali business owners would rather hire non Somalis to work at their businesses. It's all about LACAG and who can help you with your bottom line.

shame really. as more and more Somali people leave their land to make fortunes aboard, bantus and oromos are increasing.

i was talking to my friend last week about forming a vigilante group to prey on the oromos and the bantus after dark. clearly the Kulmiye zionist criminal regime, despite their attempts to introduce biometric ID cards, aren't doing anything about the influx of non ethnic Somalis in our lands. just this morning, near my work place, this oromo woman was being beaten up by her ''husband'' in public. he asked her about the baby and she replied ''waa tii aasey'', WTF? of course, i wasn't there but my friend was saying this. they have bad dhaqan.

Greedy business people. Somalis are not lazy - tell that to fisherman, farmers, pastoralists, dockworkers etc and all the ones in the West working as cleaners and in senior homes. There is no real government authority and the business people are the same ones who dismantled national infrastructure in Mogadishu in 1990s to sell off.

In no African country are Somalis hired as employees by nationals - thus Somalis are forced to become business owners and they end up providing jobs for Kenyans, Ugandans etc. We provide jobs for them in their own countries - why are we providing jobs for them in ours?

they are also lazy, illiterate, incompetent, undermining. i've instructed the same guy to use a hole puncher at least 5 times now. he gets it wrong every time. there's a limit to being patient. a Bantu Kenyan can do that without being prompt. when it comes to work, Somalis are truly bad. they like to cut corners and always end up producing shoddy work. these people can work but they also do the job at 50% capacity. that is not good.

the people need training. we are making the necessary arrangements. why should they demand jobs, if they're unable to do them. it is our hope, there's more technical vocational courses for ethnic Somalis, so they can do the job probably. they are willing to do the work, they just need be shown how. it's not their fault.
