I agree with Haatu here. There are more holes in Somaliland politics than in that proverbial Swiss cheese.Somaliland is today poisoned by irattionality of sub-clan politics in the service of narrow self-interest of few powerful men.. What we have witnessed over the last few months , which showed a dramatic display of sub-clan politics, suggest that Somaliland is NOT ready to part ways with Somalia permanently yet and if they do at this time they are in for a big chilling shock! In this respect the question of secession is entirely irrelevant until the public educates themselves on the downfall of sub-clan politics and a strong civic institutions separate from the clasp of any president is put in place.. Though it was in the offing long before this past election, but this sham election brought the weakness of Somaliland to the open and I will argue Somaliland is NOT ready yet.I hate to admit it, but the truth never kills anyone!

Stoic Somaliland is a country that is very traditional clan is used for everything its a cure for Somalilands society , Somalilanders can talk about clans for hours and it still means nothing because the society of Somaliland is fundamentally different than Somalia. You will always here people talking about clan i think these talks are good for both Somaliland and Somalia , after 21 years that the governments of Somalia and Somaliland are starting to talk. Which can bring some solutions to the problems in the region. This same thing happened in 2003 when rayaale won the elections and for 3 months there was a court case against udub rigging the elections. And this is just normal i remember in 2009 when rayaale extended his term in September there were rallies over 7 people got killed in hargeysa in anti govt protests he closed down even the parliament its all part of the process. Stoic Sub clan business in Somaliland is used for sheeko mafrish its all part of the parties and it generates money songs are being composed by poets. Let the talking begin between Somaliland and Somalia.

Somaliland: Somalia PM Informs of Imminent start of Talks

Monday, 31 December 2012 11:34

By: Yusuf M Hasan

MOGADISHU (Somalilandsun) – Machinations are in progress to resuscitate the postponed talks between Somaliland and Somalia.

The Somalia prime minister Abdi Farah Shirdoon 'Saeed' has revealed that plans are afoot to reconvene talks between the neighboring countries which have been in suspension for a couple of months.

The talks that are as a result of the dictates of the London and Istanbul II conferences on Somalia were postponed by the Somaliland administration in order to facilitate the election of a new government in Mogadishu after the mandate of the Sheikh Sharif led Transitional Federal government expired thus paving the way for the election of the current government of Hasan Sheikh Mahmud.

The talk resumption revelation was made by PM Shirdoon during a briefing to the Mogadishu parliament where he informed the parliamentarians that successful conclusion to the talks whose objectives are known to all is anticipated.

The British government that has been in his forefront of the talks is currently hosting, separately, the foreign ministers of Somalia and Somaliland Ms Fozia Haji Yusuf Aden and Dr Mohamed Abdilahi Omar respectively.

While Ms Fozia has informed that her visit pertains to preparations for a forthcoming visit to that country by her boss president Mahmud Sheikh Hasan it is not yet clear on the purpose of the visit by her counter part from Somaliland.

Suffice is to say that it is most probable that the two foreign ministers shall be brought together by the Brits who diplomatic cunning is renowned worldwide not to mention that their desire to see conclusion of the talks that started in Chevening a house in the suburbs of London is supreme.

In a recent tweet the Somaliland head of state President informed that he is soon to embark on journey to the USA but revelations that his Somalia counterpart is on his way to the UK and coupled with the simultaneous arrival in London by their foreign policy chiefs is amble evidence that some sort of head of state meeting is in the cooking.

During 40th anniversary commemorations of the Somali Pen Society in Djibouti the other day the two heads of state managed to hold a brief and first ever tet 'a' tet that was reported by president Silanyo as nothing of import despite revealing in the same breath that the postponed talks are to be resumed.

In the short duration of the talks which were the first between the two former united countries in 21 years a number of accords were reached in Chevening house in England between technical committees and in the subsequent Silanyo-Sharif meet in Dubai.

Somalia will be stuupid to let this lady be representing them in these talks; a forlon attempt will it be to sell their side of the story! They say power is derived from position, expertise and having what others want, which in this case this lady has none..A tactical misstep will it be for President Hassan and one that can question his will and fortitude in uniting Somalia.A person who few months ago was playing for the other team will attract nothing, but depersonilization tactics from the group you are trying to pursued.Resolution occurs when one party realizes it can no longer pursue its aims and gives them up and I don't see that happening with Somaliland. We can safely predict this talk will bring nothing, but more talks in the future again and again....

Stoic as long as people are talking its good and the international community is being the referee its all good, problems will not be solved over night as for Fowziya its up to the government of Somalia to pick who is representing them. But i am certain the President of Somalia will lead these talks on Somalia's side.

Xaaji, What good will talks do if there is no intermediate objectives-markers of progress- and no tentative timeline established in solving this problem once and for good?

There is no timeline or time table and the IC did that on purpose they didn't want to rush anything keeping the balance so that no side says we are being rushed to do something but the IC also said that the talks should happened between the 2 sides and the talks should continue. These problems cannot be solved over night Somaliland and Somalia haven't talked for more than 21 years lots of things are being prepared for these talks there are many subjects on the agenda.
