SOMALIA: Tens of thousands need food aid in Somaliland

(IRIN) - About 120,000 people in the coastal, mid- and far western regions of the self-declared republic of Somaliland require emergency food assistance after four years of failed rains, says Mohamed Mousa Awale, chairman of Somaliland's environment research and disaster preparedness agency.

"We are calling on the international community to help these needy people to save lives," he said.

The most affected areas include the Salel Region localities of Asha-Ado, Lughaya, Garba-Dadar, Gargaara and Waraqa-dhigta where some 450 tons of food aid from Djibouti was distributed on 6 July.

"People [have] gathered in the villages after they lost [all] their animals during the four-year drought," said Sa'ad Ahmed Abdillahi, a member of Zaila District Council. Zaila is the capital of Salel in western Somaliland near the border with Djibouti.

Abdillahi said thousands of former pastoralists in Salel had migrated to areas such as Abdul-Kadir, Asha-Ado, Cel-Gal and Harirad which previously had some remaining water sources. "Now... there are thousands of families in search of a livelihood. These people have no shelter, food or even medical care."

The four-year drought has caused human deaths, too. "We believe that about 500 mothers lost their lives during [childbirth] because they were malnourished and about 1,500 children died from malnutrition in the four years," added Abdillahi.

Previously, people were able to cope by exchanging some of their livestock for food.

Remittances had also played a role. “Families who have relatives abroad can survive [for] some time, but now it seems that the problem is getting beyond the money that the diaspora Somalilanders send back home,” said Sayid Omar, chairman of the Awdal region-based Africa Youth Development Association.

Appeals for help

The village of Garbadadar in the Golis mountains, 125km northwest of Hargeisa, is now hosting several hundred drought-displaced families.

"We came here to search for a livelihood or get support from the government of Somaliland, citizens or international aid workers because we lost our animals. But we are yet to get any; now we are relying on local people's support," Mohamed Hassan, a father of five, told journalists.

"We get some food sometimes, and sometimes we [do] not. We hope the Almighty Allah will help us," said Amina Omar, a mother of three.

In a 24 June statement, Somaliland president Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud (Silanyo) appealed for help in responding to the drought: "It is estimated that up to 20,000 households have been affected. These people require emergency assistance in food, water, medical care and shelter. If we do not respond and attend to their needs immediately, we might lose many of them, particularly the most vulnerable, the young and the old, to starvation and dehydration.”

Day-time temperatures in the coastal areas of Somaliland exceed 40 degrees Celsius at this time of year. Somaliland has experienced worsening drought since March.

A May-June update by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization's Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Unit expressed concern about the plight of pastoralists with sheep or goats along parts of the Indian Ocean coastline which received poor to no rainfall. A third consecutive failed `Hays’ rainy season (December-February) in the Guban area of Awdal region and in the Waqooyi Galbeed region led to a large outmigration of livestock to the nearby Golis mountains.

Politics

First I spot nine colours

Next I read eight names

I hear thirty different speeches

With eighteen disparate views

And thirteen different faces

All poisoned by pessimism

Lacking focus and direction

Strangers one and all.

Is this really what's called politics?

It looks like a nest of vipers to me!

Politics unsettles everything

It turns the world upside down

It divides all the people

And foments great unrest

Everywhere it goes

It infects them with its poison.

Politics sneers at moral excellence

And thinks goodness is an irritant

It promotes evil deeds

And makes friends with deceit

Hiding behind the interests of the clan

While it takes a swindler along as a pal

It confides in deception

And flags up failure

In order to profit from what's going on.

Politics turns its back on the inspirational leader

It corrupts law and order

And spits out justice

Like a locust it gnaws at wisdom

And infects equal rights with its sickness

So that injustice can rule the roost

Politics greases the ladder

It is simply prejudice in action.

I tell you there are two sorts of politics -

But the Somali version

Is doomed from the outset

All the people who've been good

Just because they fear Satan

Politics strikes down with an evil spirit

This is the prize it is after -

When people line up on two sides

And set to attacking each other

When throat-slitting begins

When body and soul are sundered apart

Politics cheers from the sidelines

Shouting out ‘keep up the good work'.

I tell you there are two sorts of politics -

But the Somali version

Is doomed from the outset

Politics kidnaps the innocent

It auctions off people's provisions

Swindling huge sums of cash

By impersonating the owners

Anything related to guns and machetes

Anything resembling weapons and ordnance

It purchases in bulk for the people

How on earth can we stop this from happening?

Believe me, that is the aim.

I tell you there are two sorts of politics -

But the Somali version

Is doomed from the outset

Politics is hostile to patience

To people who are calm while they wait

To those who are always thoughtful

It hires contract killers

Employs bullying and force.

Politics sets traps

And lays down a noose

If someone slips free

Who loathes deception

Is untainted by evil

And immune to Satan's spells

That person should be safe and secure

Because ‘crime never pays'.

I tell you there are two sorts of politics -

But the Somali version

Is doomed from the outset

Politics conjures up sorcery

It brings on fits and infections

It cooks up poison and wounds

It flourishes razor-sharp blades

Blades that can cut with a word

Politics nurtures the greedy

Who stockpiles goods for himself

It brings on alcoholism

And stunts children's growth

Politics is a lethal virus

Spreading sickness and crime

Politics is a wild beast

It provokes danger and terror

Terminal illness and pain

It sets relatives against each other

It tears families apart

And it marks the death of friendship

I tell you there are two sorts of politics -

But the Somali version

Is doomed from the outset

If we could disembowel

A so-called political ‘expert'

If we could take him apart

And probe his insides

Anyone within reachWould keel over unconscious

Anyone who comes within its orbit

Turns into a mealy-mouthed swindler

Someone who speaks solely in euphemisms

Who manipulates his erratic behaviour

Into a version of normality

Claiming his is the only perspective.

A politician can't give a straight answer

He won't listen to what you say

Before you can open your mouth

He comes out with something

That is utterly incredible

Like a madman

Teetering on the edge of a cliff

He fixes his eyes on the crowd

He projects multiple signals

By wildly flapping his hands

He conjures figures out of thin air

And weaves strange predictions

Based on anonymous data

What a travesty is displayed

What forgeries are created

What false statements are written

All those misguided people

Have been damaged by their politics

Which they think is normality

But one day sincerity will be rescued

Those who've escaped will be safe

Those who've waited will get their reward

And the deceiver will be destroyed

Because ‘crime doesn't pay'.

Soul wrenching lyrics.

Ma Wardheertaan jeclaa baan, ku wareejin Woyane?!

Ma Wardheertaan jeclaa baan, ku wareejin Woyane?!

Ma Goodaydan jeclaa baan, gaalka uga tagaayee?

Ma Goodaydan jeclaa baan, gaalka uga tagaayee?

Qoraxeeydan jeclaa baan, qaran loo ogolaynee?

Qoraxeeydan jeclaa baan, qaran loo ogolaynee?

Ana goobtan jeclaa baan, nabad loo ogolaynee!

Ana goobtan jeclaa baan, nabad loo ogolaynee!

Dhagaxbuur taan jeclaa, baan uga dhuuman Tigraye?!

Dhagaxbuur taan jeclaa, baan uga dhuuman Tigraye?!

Jigjigadaan jeclaa buu...

Abwaan Abdijabar.

Gobonimo iyo hiigsad.

Gud urdaha soo riday waxaan guuro soconaaba,

Geedaha madoow iyo waxaan gebi ka haadnaba,

Gubtaanyada iyo caarada waxaan golon ka saarnaba,

Hurdo guur wuxuu nagu dhacee aanu gama'a diidnaaba.

Anagoo go'doon ah waxaanu cadhada la guuxnaaba,

Oo gaaroodi joog iyo waxaan timo' gardownaaba,

Guuradooda buuraha waxaan oon uu gubanaaba,

Gaajo uma debcayno ee waxaan golongolyoownaaba.

Gurmad aan daalayn oo hawl galaanu nahayee,

Maroodiga gaboobiyo waxaanu geri la daaqnoba,

Waxaanu wada gooshno ee gorayo raacnaaba,

Gelowgiyo galaydhyada waxaan wada golaynaaba,

Garanuugta Laacdame'ba waxaa golos nidhaaahnaaba.

Waxaan guuro guuraynaa ee aan galab carawnaaba,

Good iyo abeesada waxaan gudug u jiidhnaabaa,

wiyilshiibu gedeedii waxay nagu gadoodaa,

shabeel oo guhaad badan waxa is garab istaagnaa,

Gooshiyo ninkeedi waxaan geel ka dhiganaaba,

Gebi habar dugaageed waxan gacal wadaagnaa.

Dhibka gorofka noo qaatay ee geexda naga maala,

gundhigiyo wax loo geeyay baa noo gadhoodhsamayee,

Xeylatoo na gaadhsiiyay iyo nabaraduu geystay,

Maantana gedisii atoor Geesale' ayaa yimi'ee.

Gardaradda waayanaha waxaan ku gacan saydhnaaba,

Gabadh iyo dhamaan wiil waxaan wada dirirnaaba,

God madoow garteenii waxii lagaga geeyaaba,

Duniduba waxay nagu geftee nagugu gooyaaba.

Anaguna go'aan adag waxaan gows ka dhiganaaba,

Gacmo wada jirkood iyo waxaan talo gorfaynaaba,

Isugeyntu waa dhib ee waxay guluc lahaataba,

Kolba geer waxay naga gashay naga gadoontaaba,

Galad Eebahay iyo waxaan guusha suganaa ba.

Waxba gabaygu yuu ila gudbin ee waxaan ku soo gaabshay:

Gobonimo u dirir iyo waxan nahay suluf colaadeedee,

Dabkaa garabka noo saaran oo gaadh hayaanu nahayee,

Geyigaan u dhalanoo adaanu gaardi kuu nahayee,

Geddaa noo xigyaana waa inaan libinta gaadhnaa ee (Inshallah)

...Geddaa noo xigyaana waa inaan libinta gaadhnaa.
