Somalia: Huge suicide blast kills many in Mogadishu

Recommended Posts

At least 55 people have been killed by a huge suspected suicide blast near government buildings in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, say officials.

Eyewitnesses said a truck carrying explosives was driven into a gate near a government ministry and detonated.

A spokesman for the Islamist militant group al-Shabab told the BBC it had carried out the attack.

A BBC correspondent at the ministry said there were bodies on the ground and soldiers firing into the air

He said it was the worst incident he had ever experienced.

The blast struck outside a compound housing government buildings in the Kilometre Four district.

An official with Mogadishu's ambulance service, Ali Ruse, said 65 bodies had been recovered and at least 50 other people had been injured.

"Some are still lying there. Most of the people have burns," he told Reuters news agency.

Al-Shabab, which has links to al-Qaeda, controls large swathes of south and central Somalia.

It retreated from Mogadishu two months ago, but analysts said that without a front line it was likely to begin carrying out more suicide attacks.

An bomb blast outside main government buildings in Mogadishu has killed more than 50 people dead and wounded many others, the co-ordinator of the Somali capital's ambulance service says.

Ali Muse told the Reuters news agency that students, soldiers and civilians were among the dead in Tuesday's attack.

"We have carried 65 dead bodies and 50 injured people," he said. "Some are still lying there. Most of the people have burns."

Al Jazeera has learned that a-Shabab, the armed anti-government group, claimed responsibility for the attack, which occurred when three cabinet ministers were inside the building.

There were initial reports that the labour minister was injured in the blast.

This mindless violence was useful tool against the Ethiopians, in the current situation however, this is unnecessary, unethical, ill-advised and not to mention un-Islamic.

Che you are wrong, this kind of mindless violence is never justified and the last part of your statement is why you are wrong. There are clear rules in Islam when fighting the enemy, don't kill the weak, even don't destroy farms, trees etc let alone killing non-combatants humans.

Shabaab are ungrateful, they are slaughtering the people who supported them against the Ethiopian army and the question is why? May Allah have mercy on the dead and May Allah remove this cancer from the Somali people.
