nuune Posted August 11, 2011 Two Turkish cargo planes carrying 50 tons of humanitarian aid flew to drought-hit Somalia on Monday while officials confirmed that more flights would soon follow as a nationwide campaign to help millions facing famine gathered steam. “Whatever the reason behind poverty and famine in Somalia, we are all responsible. The situation is a shame for humankind ... and we can remedy that by working hand in hand,” Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdağ said at a ceremony in Ankara before the planes departed. “More cargo planes will be flying [to Somalia] tomorrow and then more aid, collected from all over Turkey, will be taken to Somalia – some on cargo planes and some on sea vessels,” Bozdağ said. Speaking at the same ceremony, Health Minister Recep Akdağ said Monday’s shipment included 10 tons of medical supplies. The rest was food intended to sustain 1,500 families for a month, including baby food, milk powder, sugar, oil and flour. A Turkish medical team is ready to go to Somalia to set up field hospitals, provided that their safety is ensured, Akdağ said. The head of the Turkish International Cooperation and Development Agency, Serdar Çam, flew to Somalia on one of the planes. Also Monday, the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey, or TOBB, launched its own fund-raising campaign with a donation of 1 million Turkish Liras. “I am calling on the Turkish business community to contribute. I am urging everybody to help,” TOBB chairman Rıfat Hisarcıklıoğlu said. nuune Posted August 11, 2011 PM Set to Visit Somalia Thursday, 11 August 2011 Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Wednesday announced plans to visit drought-hit Somalia with his family, slamming developed countries for benefitting from Africa’s natural resources while remaining indifferent to the continent’s struggles. “Every day hundreds of our African brothers are dying. Where is the world, the developed countries? Do they extend their hands?” Erdoğan asked his party fellows at a meeting in Ankara. Accusing some countries that have “plundered for centuries and made these regions bloody hostages of dictatorial regimes for their own interests” of just watching the famine disaster from the sidelines, Erdoğan asked when the international community would help Africa if they did not do it now. “If they don’t take upon the burden of conscience in the world, then which civilization, which universal values can they talk about?” he asked. Emphasizing that Turkey is carrying out an ongoing campaign to aid the hungry in Somalia, Erdoğan said he and Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, along with their families, would soon pay a visit to the stricken country. Turkey’s Religious Affairs Directorate has collected 31 million Turkish Liras to help Africans suffering from hunger, Director Mehmet Görmez told the Anatolia news agency Wednesday. Noting that all members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, or OIC, would convene in Istanbul on Aug. 17, Gormez said they would ask for the cooperation of Islamic countries to help Africa. Turkish International Cooperation and Development Agency (TIKA) will open an office in Somalia. "Turkey will not only send aid to Somalia but also will continue to contribute to this country to get strengthened in international trade, economy, agriculture and industry," TIKA Chairman Serdar Cam said on Tuesday. Aid team, led by Cam and Turkish Red Crescent Director General Omer Tasli, are visiting camps in Mogadishu, Somalia after arrival of two cargo planes. Distribution of the assistance started in the region. The planes brought first part of the assistance collected by TIKA, Turkish Prime Ministry Disaster & Emergency Management Directorate (AFAD), Turkey's Religious Affairs Directorate General, and Turkish Red Crescent (Kizilay) and Sabah newspaper. The Turkish team visited the camps and distributed milk, biscuits, chocolate and candies to children. Cam told A.A correspondent that they sad scenes during the works in camps, yet noted that eradication of the camp regions from Shabab organization gave hope. Cam said the state was gradually establishing its own system, and noted that peace and tranquility should be restored in the region. He said TIKA's coordination office would be opened there, underlining that, "we will be in an effort to contribute to the state here with various projects." "Somalia was in a strong situation in the past on agriculture, animal breeding and fishing. However, they need systems to discipline and manage those. I think Turkey's experiences on the related matters can be relayed to them," he added. Referring to the need of state buildings and education programs for the system to operate well, Cam said, "they demanded an assault boat for coastal security. The demands in question will be conveyed to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and related authorities." Cam also said examinations were underway to construct a field hospital there. Tasci said there was urgent need for foodstuff, underlining that Turkish Red Crescent established a very big logistic center and received a very big depot. "A ship carrying aid will come from Turkey to the region. The equipment that will be shipped will be distributed to people after being collected in the depots," he said. Distribution of the assistance is expected to be concluded within a few days. According to the United Nations, up to 12 million people in the Horn of Africa have been affected by famine. The U.S. Agency for International Development said that more than 29,000 Somali children under the age of 5 have died in the past 90 days while 640,000 Somali children were acutely malnourished. The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) estimates that more than $1 billion will be necessary to address all the needs.
