MAXIMUS POWERS

20th Anniversary of the Geziera Beach Massacre

Recommended Posts

On the July 14th 1989, a huge demonstration in which thousand of people participated took place in front of Sheikh Ali Sufi mosque in Mogadishu. To quell such peaceful demonstrations, the red beret swiftly moved from their bases with heavy gun mounted jeeps and encircled the whole area, indiscriminately killing hundred of civilians. For the Barre regime, the men behind the riots were somalilanders, many of whom lived in the Case Poplare area where the shooting took place. It was the following night that the Gezeira beach massacre was carried out by General Anjah.

It was on the 16th of July 1989 that the world witnessed what became infamously known as the Gezeira Beach Massacre, where 47 Somalilanders including professors, medical doctors, engineers, businessmen and journalists were slaughtered like animals 20 miles south of Mogadishu, where ships from ancient Arabia once docked and where in the flatlands the nomads extracted salt from the turquoise sea water. It was here where 47 Somalilanders were dumped in the sand dunes after each one of them was shot in the head.

These people were picked up in the middle of the night by members of the Barre’s Green Beret at gun point and were put at the back of three military trucks blindfolded before they were brought to the sand dune area of the beach where, they were shot one by one in a pre-dug big shaft and then immediately dumped with heavy duty tractor.

The information that General Anjah personally supervised such massacre at the behest of General Maslah Mohamed Siyaad Barre have always been in the public domain. Col. Abdulkadir Haji Masalah, relative of General Anjah praised general Anjah at a clan gathering for his heroic action against the somalilanders hiding in Mogadishu and further suggested that he should be decorated for his timely action. Abdulkadir Masalah also continuously advocated for a strong military hand against the SNM/USC liberation forces.

Silly clannist notion ''Somalilanders''. Just call them SOMALIS who lived in Mogadishu city.

Those 47 Somalis that were massacred by the oppressive dictatorship should not be forgotten.

I prefer calling them 20th Century Ex-Mogadishu Society.

Joking aside, they (AUN) were killed because of something more specific than "SOMALIS who lived in Mogadishu city". But denial is a river soo mahaa?
